Allegany County Animal Shelter
www.alleganyanimalshelter.org • 301-777-5930
• Hounds Around Town - Looking for a day filled with furry friends and fun? Then look no further than the Allegany County Animal Shelter's "Hounds Around Town" program, allowing individuals to sign a shelter dog out for the day. The beautiful mountains of Western Maryland present an excellent opportunity for our shelter dogs to experience the joy of a long walk, hike or run in many of the area's scenic locations. Are you looking for something more low-key? No problem. We have many pups that would enjoy an afternoon lounging on a couch, a stroll through the neighborhood, or maybe a trip for ice cream. The most important thing is giving an adoptable shelter dog a much-needed break from the kennels and providing enrichment and socialization. For more information on the Hounds Around Town program, contact the shelter at 301-777-5930.

Cumberland Theatre

info@cumberlandtheatre.com
We have several Season Subscription Ticket options for you this year - pick your shows, choose your seats, and receive special discounts for subscribing! Our 2025 Season is filled with shows for everyone and by bringing you a variety of options, we hope to see you at the theatre more and more!
The Cumberland Theatre will continue its 37th season with the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play Doubt. The show will play for seven performances with a preview performance on September 4th and the official opening on September 5th.
Set in 1964 at St. Nicholas Church School in the Bronx, the highly traditional and inflexible Sister Aloysius Beauvier becomes suspicious of the charming, progressive Father Flynn’s intentions with a student. Sister Aloysius is unwavering in her belief of Father Flynn’s wrongdoings, but for those around her, the babble of lies and truths and questions and secrets lead them only to a place of doubt. Shanley’s gripping play leaves audiences full of questions, even until the last four chilling words.
Originally staged off-Broadway at the Manhattan Theatre Club on November 23, 2004, the production transferred to the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway in March 2005. It was revived on Broadway in 2024 and starred Amy Ryn and Liev Schreiber. In 2008, the play was adapted as a feature film titled Doubt. It starred Meryl Streep as Sister Aloysius and Philip Seymour Hoffman as Father Flynn and was nominated for several Academy Awards.
The show is being directed by Nicole Mattis, who has previously directed the CT productions of A Few Good Men and August: Osage County. The cast stars Bill Dennison (last seen in The Shark is Broken) as Father Flynn and Julie Herber (last seen in August: Osage County) as Sister Aloysius. The show also features Brenna Peerbolt (last seen in The Taming of the Shrew) as Sister James and Zoie Collins (making her CT debut) as Mrs. Muller.
The design team includes Kimberli Rowley (scenic and prop design), Joel Hoover (scenic decoration), Rhett Wolford (lighting design), Wendy Snow Walker (costume design) and Jaiden Courrier (sound design). Trevor McCabe is serving as the stage manager.
Doubt runs September 4th – 14th with Friday and Saturday performances at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm. A special preview performance will be held on Thursday, September 4th at 8:00 pm.

• Instruments of Healing tells the story of Ben Cohen, whose unconventional path takes him through the lows of a learning disorder, intense school bullying, mental illness, and being told by educators he isn't cut out to follow the big dreams he has for himself. But with the support of key people who believe in him, especially his tough-love mother, and through his passion for singing and playing the piano, he overcomes his many obstacles and creates an organization that heals those in recovery programs through the power of music. Ben's journey proves that sometimes dreams take time, but when the right people support you, those dreams can become real.
Based on the life experiences of author and composer Andy Goldenson and his non-profit of the same name (instrumentsofhealing.org), Instruments of Healing is a story of not giving up, no matter what. And as part of the show, audience members will get a feel of what an Instruments of Healing program is all about with live band performances by cast members.
Sept. 12, 13, 19, 20 at 8:00 pm & Sept. 14, 21 at 2:00 pm. Doors open one hour prior to the start of each show.

Gallery Stage

• Megan Jean’s Secret Family featuring Dre Anders – Saturday, October 4, 7 – 9 pm. Get ready for an unforgettable night of genre-bending brilliance as Megan Jean’s Secret Family takes the stage at Gallery Stage, joined by the soul-stirring vocals of Dré Anders.
Megan Jean’s Secret Family delivers a fresh fusion of ’70s grooves by way of ’90s rock, soul, country, and jam—all wrapped around fiercely original, danceable, and vocal-forward songwriting. With a sound that bridges generations, they made their national radio debut on NPR’s Mountain Stage in May 2024, performing alongside legends like Keller Williams and Bettye Lavette. Following a powerhouse set at DelFest 2024, DC Music Review hailed them as one of their “new favorite acts.” With a forthcoming debut full-length album, PLOT (Play.Loud.On.Turntable), funded in part by a creativity grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, this is a band on the rise—and not to be missed.
Joining them is the captivating Dré Anders, whose musical journey began in Sweden at the age of three and has taken her around the globe. Known for her warm harmonies and magnetic presence, Dré blends West Coast folk and gospel influences into every note. From fronting her own ensemble Dré and the Collective to collaborating with bluegrass icons like Del McCoury, Sierra Hull, and The Travelin’ McCourys, she brings both authenticity and power to the stage.

• Megan Bee – Friday, October 10, 7 – 9 pm. Join us at Gallery Stage for an unforgettable evening with Megan Bee, a singer-songwriter whose music embodies wanderlust, storytelling, and a deep reverence for the land.
Her music blends homespun vocals, acoustic simplicity, and winsome storytelling, weaving in imagery from nature and her years as an environmental educator, traveling farmhand, and vagabond. Megan’s live shows are a warm, engaging mix of personal stories, road adventures, nature musings, and light-hearted humor.

• Rivers – Saturday, October 18, 7 – 9 pm. Born out of the simple idea to be able to play anywhere and at any time gave rise to central Pennsylvania’s indie-folk group Rivers. Brought together and baptized by the mighty Susquehanna, and with just simple acoustic instruments, their dynamic amasses an eclectic inundation of sound. With Joe Schaefer (bass) and Vincent Yarnell (guitar and banjo), they spatter forth an electrifying array of technical nuance and heavy-thumping beats worthy to be remembered. Rivers’ style is a wash of genres that defies classification and leaves audiences thirsty for more. Now this folk slaps.

The Allegany County Library System
The Allegany County Library System announces the following schedule changes for September 2025:
-
Saturday, September 13 – Heritage Days
The Washington Street Library will be open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM in celebration of Heritage Days festivities in Cumberland. To allow for staff coverage, the South Cumberland Library will be closed on September 13.
• September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and the Allegany County Library System (ACLS) is reminding the community that the library is here for you—like your favorite neighbor. Whether you’re looking to grow, to connect, or simply to make it through a tough season, the library is a welcoming space where everyone belongs. Sign up for your library card at your local branch or visit www.alleganycountylibrary.info to learn more. Because with one card, the possibilities are endless.
The first step to engaging with your library is to sign up for a library card, and it’s easy to get started:
Adults can sign up for a free library card at any location with a photo ID and proof of current address (if not listed on the ID).
Out-of-state residents can receive a library card for just $10, valid for three years. Dependents in the household can receive cards for no additional cost at the same time.
Students in Allegany County Public Schools and participating private schools are automatically registered for a STAR (STudent Access Resource) Card once school enrollment is finalized at the end of September, giving them instant access to online resources and materials.
Fine-Free Access for Kids: Children’s cards and materials are now fine free—no late or overdue fees. Adults who were charged late fines as minors can also have those fees waived, and staff are always ready to work with adults to find solutions for existing charges.
• Fall Story Times begin September 23. Families can join weekly sessions filled with stories, crafts, and fun activities that spark a love of reading and support early literacy. With a new schedule and times, Story Times are a great example of how visiting the library supports families from the earliest stages of learning.
Vaccine Clinics return this fall. In partnership with Martin’s Pharmacy, ACLS branches will once again host walk-in vaccine clinics. Residents can conveniently protect themselves and their loved ones with vaccines for COVID, shingles, Tdap, RSV, and pneumonia—all offered in welcoming, familiar library spaces.
Library patrons have access to a wide range of digital collections via the library’s website, including popular options such as hoopla, Libby, and Kanopy. These collections offer 24/7 access to a vast array of ebooks, audiobooks, movies, music, and magazines, ensuring that patrons can enjoy the library's resources at their convenience. Additionally, patrons can easily renew books and other materials from the comfort of their homes by accessing their accounts through the library's homepage.
For more information, go to www.alleganycountylibrary.info or contact any branch of the Allegany County Library System at Frostburg, 301-687-0790; George’s Creek, 301-463-2629; LaVale, 301-729-0855; South Cumberland, 301-724-1607; or Washington Street, 301-777-1200.

Ghost Tour
A ghost tour of historic Cumberland will be conducted on Saturday, September 13 at 7:00 PM.
The one-hour walking tour will begin at the Allegany County Library on Washington Street, where tickets may be purchased immediately before the tour.
Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for students.
According to tour guide Anne Potts, "What better way to celebrate Heritage Days than with the spirits of past residents! These ghosts often have unfinished earthly business and provide us with clues to the time period in which they lived. Our researchers sometimes use these clues, as well as information about the site where the specter is observed, to actually reveal a specific person." The tour will include architectural features and historical facts as they pertain to the time period of the spirit’s earthly existence.
All proceeds from the tour are donated to local charities. For more information call 301-777-9140.
