Lights on the Lake
The Western Maryland Jaycees are thrilled to announce the return of the Lights on the Lake fundraiser, set to brighten the holiday season with a spectacular display of festive lights and community activities. This year’s event will kick off on Small Business Saturday, November 30th, and run through Tuesday, December 24th, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Rocky Gap State Park. As in past years, the light displays will be open each weekend, Friday through Sunday, with two additional days added on December 23rd and 24th to celebrate the Christmas holiday. The Western Maryland Jaycees are delighted to continue this cherished partnership with Rocky Gap State Park for the fourth consecutive year.
The Lights on the Lake has become a beloved holiday tradition for residents in Western Maryland and surrounding areas, offering families and friends an enchanting and memorable experience to enjoy lights and support local groups. This year, attendees can expect even more lights and an expanded array of community offerings designed to create magical memories for all ages.
The event will feature a variety of attractions across December weekends, including special appearances from Santa and Mrs. Claus, visits with alpacas, Little Wills Creek Ranch Miniature Steam Train, performances by the Frostburg Dance Academy, and photography sessions with Jordan Mace.
Here’s a preview of some of the exciting activities:

Azad’s of Cumberland
37 N. Centre Street, (301) 723-0818
A retail experience venue featuring collectible rugs while hosting events for friends, family, musicians and artists.
For the holiday season this year, I've asked some of my favorite people, who also happen to be local artists, to come join me at Azad's for a season full of friends, fellowship and art. From November 16th through December 28th, each of the artists/ friends have been invited to hang a couple of their pieces on the walls of Azad's for the season.
On Saturday November 30th (Small Business Saturday) and on Saturday December 14th (Downtown Cumberland's Winter Festival & Market) - they have all been invited to come together for a special Holiday Saturday "Meet the Artist" Showcase to sell their work and to meet the public. They will be selling both the featured pieces, as well as any other work they decide to bring. NO RULES AT THE RUG SHOP.
Please make plans to stop by any time from Nov. 16th - Dec. 28th to see their work, but especially on these two showcase Saturdays. Both Saturdays are BYO & Potluck Hors d'oeuvres events. Feel free to bring your favorite flavor and a snack to share with all.
(The artists' participation is casual, some may not have pieces to me until mid-season - and some artists may not be able or available for both dates - it's all good)

Then look no further than the Allegany County Animal Shelter’s “Hounds Around Town” program, allowing individuals to sign a shelter dog out for the day. The beautiful mountains of Western Maryland present an excellent opportunity for our shelter dogs to experience the joy of a long walk, hike or run in many of the area’s scenic locations. Are you looking for something more low-key? No problem. We have many pups that would enjoy an afternoon lounging on a couch, a stroll through the neighborhood, or maybe a trip for ice cream. The most important thing is giving an adoptable shelter dog a much-needed break from the kennels and providing enrichment and socialization. • The Cumberland Theatre will be presenting A “Seussified” Christmas Carol this weekend for a limited run of three performances. The show is part of the CT’s Theatre for Young Audiences’ initiative and is under an hour in length, making it ideal for families with young children. For those who love The Grinch and The Cat in the Hat, A “Seussified” will surely hit the mark! The show is a whimsical reinvention of Dickens' most beloved Christmas story in wacky rhymed couplets. With zoot fruited juices and binka bird geese, from Bed-Headed Fred to Timmy Loo Hoo, this tale of glorious holiday cheer is like something Dr. Seuss might have come up with -- if he ever had his way with the story... A “Seussified” Christmas Carol will run November 30th at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm and December 1st at 2:00 pm. The show runs approximately 40 minutes with no intermission. Refreshments will be available in the lobby before the performances. For tickets and more information, please visit cumberlandtheatre.com or call 301.759.4990.
• The Cumberland Theatre will end its 36th Season of entertainment with the play It’s a Wonderful Life based on the classic film of the same name. The show will run December 5th – 22nd. Adapted to the stage by Kimberli Rowley and Seth Thompson, this rendition stays true to the beloved Frank Capra film starring Jimmy Stewart. It tells the familiar story of the saga of George Bailey, the Everyman from the small town of Bedford Falls, whose dreams of escape and adventure have been squashed by family obligations and civic duty and whose guardian angel has to descend on Christmas Eve to save him from despair, and to remind him – by showing him what the world would have been like had he never been born – that he has had, after all, a wonderful life. It’s a Wonderful Life is being sponsored by Queen City Cravings and Fore Axes, with additional funding being provided by Carl Belt, Inc., and the Snow Family. It will be performed December 5th – 22nd, with Friday and Saturday performances at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm. A BOGO ticket deal will be offered on Thursday, December 5th, when patrons use the code WINGS. More information on ratings, group sales, etc., can be found on the theatre’s Facebook page or at cumberlandtheatre.com, where tickets are available for purchase. Reservations can also be made by calling the box office at 301.759.4990.

Embassy Theatre

• The Embassy Theatre will wrap up its 2024 season with a present for you of Christmas Belles this holiday season! Plans for a church Christmas program spin out of control in a hilarious Southern farce about family secrets and sisters pulling in different directions on the project: a surly Santa, a vengeful sheep, and Elvis in a manger.
While it’s Christmas-time in Fayro, Texas, the Futrelle Sisters—Frankie, Twink and Honey Raye—are not in a particularly festive mood. Cranky Frankie is weeks overdue with her second set of twins. Twink is in jail for inadvertently burning down half the town. Hot-flash-suffering Honey Raye is desperately trying to keep the Tabernacle of the Lamb’s Christmas Program from spiraling into chaos. Can the distracted sisters find a way to team up and present a Christmas program the citizens of Fayro will never forget? Their hilarious holiday journey through a misadventure-filled Christmas Eve is guaranteed to bring joy to your world!
Directed by Tyler Gilks with stage managers Denise Adams & Daniel Reed, Christmas Belles will run December 12 – 22 with 2 PM matinee performances December 15 and 22. Ferleman Gallery presents "What About the Women,"
9 N. Centre Street • www.ferleman.com • art@ferleman.com
Gallery hours are Monday - Thursday, 10am to 4pm, Friday 10am-8pm, and Saturday 12pm - 8pm
The exhibit will run through December 31, 2024, offering an in-depth exploration into the themes of femininity, resistance, and the cultural dynamics surrounding the female identity.
Kim Klabe’s What About the Women is a bold, contemplative journey that disrupts traditional narratives around womanhood. Using mixed media, Klabe juxtaposes gestural abstraction with textured layers of text and symbol, crafting pieces that engage viewers with the complexities of identity and the political struggles embedded in the female form. Her work transcends visual art, invoking powerful discourse on the spaces women occupy within both societal perceptions and their personal realities.
What About the Women is not just an exhibit; it’s a critical space for cultural dialogue. Ferleman Gallery, situated in the Appalachian mountains of Western Maryland at 9 North Centre Street, provides the ideal setting for Klabe’s discourse on femininity. Known for its commitment to contemporary and historical currents, Ferleman Gallery continues its tradition of sparking meaningful conversations that reflect on evolving societal roles.
Join us for the opening of What About the Women and engage with a powerful, thought-provoking examination of the modern female experience.
