Mother Tongue: a Weekend of Women’s Voices brings together outstanding women poets, writers, authors, and readers from our community for a weekend of literary enjoyment and appreciation. As we kick off Women's History Month this March, Lily Books & Cafe and the Cumberland Chapter of the Maryland Writers' Association are partnering to offer an exciting program of lit-focused events highlighting and celebrating women’s voices. Featured events include a women's poetry reading and open mic night at Loft 129, followed by a panel of local author readings and discussion, a luncheon and book signings, and ending the day with a hands-on writing workshop, all at Lily Books & Cafe. Mother Tongue is free to attend and open to all genders. We hope you will join us in celebration, community, and creativity.

Howard's Half Marathon/5K Run Festival

Howard's Half Marathon/5K Run Festival is a charity event raising money for the Allegany County Animal Shelter, a municipal no-kill shelter located in Cumberland, MD and serving the surrounding area. Two events are featured - a half-marathon and a 5K race. Both courses are out and back format. Registration for each event begins on March 1, 2026. The Vision and Verse competition – sponsored by the Allegany Arts Council – seeks to explore the intersection between image and image: photography and poetry. Submissions must be based on photographs exhibited at the 12th annual Allegany National Photography Competition and Exhibition (ANPCE) show, which opens Saturday, April 18, 2026, at the Allegany Museum in Cumberland, Maryland.
The winners will receive a cash prize and be invited to read their work at the ANPCE Closing Reception.

The winning entries will be exhibited at the Arcadian Gallery from May 15 to June 20, 2026. The jurors for the competition are Terry Miller for art and Steven David Johnson for photography. The Maryland State Department of Education's Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) – DORS helps people with physical, emotional, intellectual, developmental, sensory, and learning disabilities go to work and keep their jobs through a variety of vocational rehabilitation (VR) services.

CASA of Western Maryland is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) that recruits and trains volunteers to speak for abused and neglected children in Washington and Allegany Counties. CASA volunteers are appointed by the courts to deliver unbiased fact-based information on behalf of children in the welfare system. Community Trust Foundation Announces Office Relocation
The Community Trust Foundation (CTF) is excited to announce that it will be relocating its office from the Gateway Center Building on Baltimore Street to 208 N. Centre Street in Cumberland, Maryland. The official move-in date is February 1.
CTF extends its sincere gratitude to Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) and the ACM Culinary Arts staff for generously hosting the Foundation over the past seven years. Their support and partnership have played an important role in CTF’s continued growth and community impact.
This move marks a meaningful return for CTF, as the new location will once again place the Foundation in the same building as Tri-State Growth & Commerce Coalition, formerly known as The Greater Cumberland Committee—the organization from which CTF was originally founded. Reuniting under one roof reflects both a shared history and a continued commitment to strengthening the region.
CTF looks forward to welcoming community partners, donors, and nonprofit organizations to its new location beginning February 1.
