Allegany County Animal Shelter
www.alleganyanimalshelter.org • 301-777-5930
• Hounds Around Town - Looking for a day filled with furry friends and fun? Then look no further than the Allegany County Animal Shelter's "Hounds Around Town" program, allowing individuals to sign a shelter dog out for the day. The beautiful mountains of Western Maryland present an excellent opportunity for our shelter dogs to experience the joy of a long walk, hike or run in many of the area's scenic locations. Are you looking for something more low-key? No problem. We have many pups that would enjoy an afternoon lounging on a couch, a stroll through the neighborhood, or maybe a trip for ice cream. The most important thing is giving an adoptable shelter dog a much-needed break from the kennels and providing enrichment and socialization. For more information on the Hounds Around Town program, contact the shelter at 301-777-5930.

Mountainside Baroque
The 2025-2026 season leads off on Sunday, October 12, at 4 pm at the Shrine of Ss. Peter and Paul, on Fayette at Smallwood in Cumberland. In “Gems from a New Era: Haydn, Mozart and More,” the organization will venture beyond the Baroque to a new era in composition–the mid-18th-century “new music” that is often dubbed “Rococo.” It was characterized by easier harmonies, multi-movement compositions, a focus on the orchestra, and the rise of the piano. New composers with well-known names emerge, such as Josef Haydn and Wolfgang Mozart. For this concert, featured concerto soloists will be Joseph Yungen on fortepiano, Marc Bellassai on harpsichord, and violinist (from the "Four Seasons") Cynthia Roberts.
Sunday, December 21, at 5 pm at Emmanuel Episcopal Parish on Washington Street, Mountainside will revisit a seasonal community event–the ecumenical "Annual Favorite: A Festival of Lessons and Carols.” Featuring the Scholars of St. Cecilia, Mountainside Baroque’s resident chamber choir, the service will include music of the season, traditional carols, and readings by local clergy and officials. The event is free and open to the public, though a free-will offering will be received. A reception will follow in the church’s Parish Hall.
Bishop Matthew Riegel, along with Co-Director Lyle Nordstrom, will present another edition of "Chant-Along" on Saturday, February 21 at 3 pm at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Fayette Street in Cumberland. “Chant-Along #3: Chant and More” will offer the opportunity to learn and sing Gregorian chant, as well as explore successor styles from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. There is no charge for the workshop though donations will be welcome.
Sunday, March 8, 4 pm in the Emmanuel Episcopal Parish Hall, Mountainside, will present "The Original Renaissance Fair: The Field of the Cloth of Gold," with music from one of the grandest events in 16th-century Europe, one that might be considered a model for today’s Renaissance fairs. At a nearly three-week gathering between the courts of Henry VIII of England and François I of France in 1520, a historic, opulent display of wealth included jousting, wrestling, and music performed by the court musicians. The tents and the costumes used so much gold cloth (an expensive fabric woven with silk and gold thread) that the site of the meeting was named after it. Featured on this concert will be returning countertenor Nathan Medley and the early brass ensemble Synnet. The English-style Emmanuel Parish Hall will be decorated with festive hangings provided by Lynne Barnes.
Sunday, May 17, at 4 pm at the Allegany Museum on Pershing in Cumberland, the season will close with “Telemann’s Don Quixote: A Comic Opera (with Puppets)." In 1758, Georg Philippe Telemann composed this final work, a "singspiel," basing it on a portion of Cervantes’ famous satirical story of the escapades of Don Quixote and his pal, Sancho Panza. Our version will be enlivened with puppets, a common practice throughout Europe at the time. We’re delighted to welcome Cumberland puppeteers Kristen Evans and Debbie Streicher to the project.

The Allegany County Library System
The Allegany County Library System announces the following schedule changes for September 2025:
The Allegany County Library System asks the public to note the following library closures and delays in November:
Wednesday, November 26: All libraries close at 5:00 p.m.
Thursday, November 27 through Saturday, November 29: All libraries CLOSED.
Westernport Library @ 121 Main will re-open on Monday, December 1, and all other libraries will re-open on Tuesday, December 2 for their regular business hours.
The Allegany County Library System (ACLS) staff are always compassionate and attuned to the needs of the communities they serve. This November, they’ve worked hard — and quickly — to respond to two growing concerns in our area. With news that SNAP benefits will be paused beginning in November and that the local animal shelter is facing leadership changes and an increased strain on resources, ACLS staff have come together to launch a special community initiative: Fall Food for Fines: Paws and Plates Edition.
Throughout the entire month of November, all ACLS library locations will collect non-perishable food items for the Western Maryland Food Bank and Purina pet food for the Allegany County Animal Shelter. For each item or pound of kibble donated, one dollar will be waived from library fines — with no limit this year. Patrons without fines are also encouraged to participate and help make a difference for local families and furry friends in need. For more information about Fall Food for Fines: Paws and Plates Edition, visit www.alleganycountylibrary.info or stop by any ACLS library location.
We’re thrilled to announce a brand-new addition to our digital library — Blackstone Unlimited Audio! Thanks to the Western Maryland Regional Library, Allegany County Library System patrons now have instant, unlimited access to thousands of audiobooks for all ages. With no holds, no waitlists, and no fees, your next great listen is just a tap away. Enjoy over 7,000 titles across every genre — from bestselling authors like Karin Slaughter, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Donna Leon, Hugh Howey, and Jeneva Rose, to timeless classics and beloved children’s stories.
Getting started is easy: Visit BlackstoneUnlimited.com, sign up by searching for "Western Maryland Regional Library," and then using your ACLS library card, start listening instantly on any device! Whether you’re commuting, exercising, or relaxing at home, you’ll always have a story ready to play — no waiting required. Access to Blackstone Unlimited is proudly provided by the Western Maryland Regional Library. Happy listening!
The community has access to a wide range of digital collections via the library’s website, including popular options such as hoopla, Libby, and Kanopy. These collections offer 24/7 access to a vast array of ebooks, audiobooks, movies, music, and magazines, ensuring that patrons can enjoy the library's resources, even if the library is closed. Additionally, library users can easily renew books and other materials from the comfort of their homes by accessing their accounts through the library's homepage.
