Passages Through Time, A Celebration of Allegany County History

July 4 @ 12:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Celebrate the MD 250 in Allegany County with this free all-day celebration of our history, heritage, and community.

Make your way to Cumberland for a spectacular semiquincentennial celebration at Canal Place on July 4, starting with a ride or hike on the Great Allegheny Passage.

Enjoy live entertainment all day, the burial of a time capsule, and the planting of the liberty tree. Take in a “freedom ride” with the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad during the day and nostalgic ice cream trains in the evening, with narrators sharing the history of the area as you chug through the mountains to Frostburg. Special programming throughout both trail towns and culminating with fireworks, this will be worth an overnight stay. Bring your neighbors and friends to participate in this milestone celebration!

Potomac Concert Band will perform on the stage at Canal Place on the festival grounds during the 4th of July holiday at 8 pm. Open to the public at no charge. Bring a chair or blanket. Family-friendly event.

Cumberland Historic Ghost Tours

Set some time aside for a little ghost hunting on July 4th. Cumberland Historic Ghost Tours will present a one-hour walking tour of Washington Street on Saturday, July 4th. The tour will begin in front of the Washington Street Library at 7 PM where tickets will be available immediately before the tour from guides in historic costumes. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for students. The tour will include architectural features of the buildings as well as historic information as they pertain to the specters. Ghosts have been part of Cumberland’s history from the 1700’s through modern days. According to guide Anne Potts, “Sometimes our team of researchers has been able to identify the apparition, but others remain a mystery for now. Clues to the specific identity usually involve a tragedy or unresolved acts of injustice.” All proceeds from the tour are donated to local charities. For more information, call 301-777-9140.

Center City Jazz Fest, August 5 – 8

The Center City Jazz Festival is an outgrowth of the ever-popular Downtown Cumberland jazz crawl put on annually by the Cumberland Jazz Society. That one night of supreme coolness has now been extended into a festival as we’ve coordinated efforts with the Levitt amp series and the new Summer in the City music series (sponsored by the Downtown Development Commission) as well as other new venues.
The festival features world-class regional and national acts spread out over 4 days. Most of the events are free!

Howard's Half Marathon/5K Run Festival

Howard's Half Marathon/5K Run Festival is a charity event raising money for the Allegany County Animal Shelter, a municipal no-kill shelter located in Cumberland, MD and serving the surrounding area. Two events are featured - a half-marathon and a 5K race. Both courses are out and back format. Registration for each event begins on March 1, 2026. • The Gilchrist Museum will present an exhibition featuring the paintings of Dr. Mark E. Sesto from June 26 through Aug. 2. An opening reception with the artist will be held on June 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.

Sesto’s artistic journey spans decades and two distinct callings. Though he drew and painted throughout his youth, he set aside art to pursue a career in medicine, eventually completing a surgical residency at the Cleveland Clinic. For the next 31 years, surgery became his creative outlet. A transformative trip to Wyoming in 2012 rekindled his passion for painting. Inspired by the grandeur of the western landscape and a desire to create a meaningful gift for a friend, Sesto completed a painting that would become the beginning of a new chapter. That experience awakened an artistic passion that had remained dormant for more than three decades. Today, Sesto primarily works in watercolor, a medium he values for its ability to capture the colors and light he observes in the natural world. His paintings reflect a fascination with the quality and direction of light and celebrate the landscapes, outdoor experiences, and memorable moments that shape our lives.

• Max Wareham & The National Bluegrass Team – Friday, July 31, 8 – 9:45 pm. Max Wareham is a Boston-based banjo player, songwriter, and author. A longtime member of the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, he has toured nationally with Rowan and appears on his Grammy-nominated album Calling You From My Mountain alongside Billy Strings.

CASA of Western Maryland

CASA of Western Maryland is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) that recruits and trains volunteers to speak for abused and neglected children in Washington and Allegany Counties. CASA volunteers are appointed by the courts to deliver unbiased fact-based information on behalf of children in the welfare system. Community Trust Foundation Announces Office Relocation

The Community Trust Foundation (CTF) is excited to announce that it will be relocating its office from the Gateway Center Building on Baltimore Street to 208 N. Centre Street in Cumberland, Maryland. The official move-in date is February 1.

CTF extends its sincere gratitude to Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) and the ACM Culinary Arts staff for generously hosting the Foundation over the past seven years. Their support and partnership have played an important role in CTF’s continued growth and community impact.

This move marks a meaningful return for CTF, as the new location will once again place the Foundation in the same building as Tri-State Growth & Commerce Coalition, formerly known as The Greater Cumberland Committee—the organization from which CTF was originally founded. Reuniting under one roof reflects both a shared history and a continued commitment to strengthening the region.

CTF looks forward to welcoming community partners, donors, and nonprofit organizations to its new location beginning February 1.
