Township Names New Fire Chief

Harrison Township has hired its interim fire chief to be the township's new fire chief.

After conducting a formal search and interviewing candidates, the township decided to promote Micheal Crist, who has been running the fire department since July 2022. Crist was given the interim title after Fire Chief Mark Lynch retired last year.

“I am proud to work for Harrison Township and to serve as the leader of this fire department.” Chief Michael Crist said. “It has been a dream of mine since I began here over two decades ago.”

Crist started as a part-time firefighter/EMT with the township in 2001. He was promoted to a full-time firefighter/paramedic in 2002. After receiving numerous certifications and degree in EMS & Fire Administration, Crist was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 2007. In 2018, Crist was promoted to battalion chief.

Crist has also been the departments training officer, EMS manager and grant administrator, in which he has brought in over $500,000 in outside funding for the township.

Township Leaders Attend Conference

In Columbus

The Ohio Township Association's (OTA) Annual Winter Conference & Trade Show was held last month in Columbus. Harrison Township Trustees and staff attended to enhance their knowledge about the laws that govern townships and how to become better government officials.

The OTA conference helps educate township officials and staff to provide them networking opportunities to meet fellow township officials from all across Ohio.

Attendees were able to attend more than 80 educational workshops, a trade show, networking and entertainment events. Topics included communications plans, ARPA, audit recommendations, state ethics training and much more.

The OTA is a statewide organization dedicated to promoting and preserving township government through educational forums and lobbying efforts. The OTA is celebrating its 95th year this year. It has more than 5,200 active members, made up of trustees and fiscal officers from Ohio’s 1,308 townships and more than 2,000 associate members and 990 affiliate members.

Celebrating Black History Month

Black History Month kick offs its month long celebration today through March 1.

Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honors all black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the U.S. today.

Black History month has been observed for 53 years. This month of February was chosen to celebrate Black History Month because it's the birth month of former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln and African American abolitionist, author and orator Frederick Douglass.

February 1 Is Ohio Township Day

Today is Ohio Township Day. Every year since 1999, this day is observed to recognize township officials and employees and the Ohio Township Association and its officers. There are 1,308 townships in Ohio and Harrison Township is one of 19 Harrison Townships in the state of Ohio.

Be Courteous And Please Pick Up After Your Pet

Besides being unsightly and smelly, animal waste can be hazardous to the health of our children who play in the community and other pets.

One of the most common forms of disease transmission between dogs is through fecal matter.

When walking your dog in the township, remember that it should be leashed. Also, it's important to remember to immediately clean up after your pet. Take along a baggie with you to pick up waste with and then dispose of it properly.
