Tuesday Evening Centering Prayer

Tuesdays at 5:30 pm

Join us on Tuesday evenings at 5:30 pm for a contemplative Eucharist with Centering Prayer. Services take place

in person and over Zoom.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” – Romans 15:13



Joy is an incredibly potent force. It is contagious and resilient and even subversive. It is so powerful that the forces of oppression work diligently to strip people of it through fear and intimidation. Joyful people are not easy to control or manipulate and they don’t readily participate in the joy-stealing of others. In its many forms, joy holds. It holds back despair, it holds hope, it holds hands, it holds energy, it holds the line, it holds on when times get tough. Joy holds. And so this summer, St. John’s is going to lean into joy! We are going to preach it, practice it, share it, and grow it. This is not just an excuse to have fun this summer, but we will! And we hope you will join us!

This summer we will once again celebrate the voices of people who are often marginalized and pushed to the edges of our culture. These are voices that we may not have heard before. We are bringing the voices of these people who dedicated their lives to weaving a tapestry of love around them, and had something  important to say! If you know of a figure that you would like to see highlighted in worship this summer, please let us know by filling out the survey at the link in the QR code or on our website under Posts. 

Our outreach closet is currently overflowing in a wonderfully abundant way! Thank you for all

your generous clothing donations! If you have additional clothing you were planning to donate, we ask that you wait until the end of August. This will give us time to sort and distribute what has already been donated. We could use a few more hands to help us sort and organize. If you have a few hours available and would like to help out, please contact Jen Page at

Service of Holy Eucharist with Centering Prayer will be held every  Tuesday at 5:30 pm in the Chapel of the Carpenter and by Zoom.

In this in-person half-day retreat we’ll introduce dances from the Sacred Circle Dance tradition as a form of embodied   prayer. These simple movements, done in a group setting, can help us unite mind, heart, and body in a three-centered     awareness to deepen our prayer practice. We’ll also use chants and body prayers as other forms of embodied prayer and as vestibules to Centering Prayer. Registration Link in the QR Code.

Food Justice DMV update: Thank you to everyone who donated items or money to support 100 children served by FJDMV. We collected 140 containers of formula and hundreds of boxes of diapers. We also had a mountain of toys and clothes. This kind of outpouring of love and generosity will go a long way to help take care of and comfort these children, and it also sends ripples of compassion out into the world. When I was at Walmart buying formula and diapers, people stopped to ask me what I was doing. When I explained, people were shocked and moved to help. "My God!" one man working there exclaimed. "What about the parents who are being held? I can't imagine! They must be beside themselves worried about their kids!" And I said, "I hear you my friend. I know God is in this, and one of my prayers is that those parents know that the rest of us - moms and dads and grandmas and papas and aunties and uncles - have got them. Their community is holding those kids and loving them as best we can." And you all are a part of   that - the weaving together of a community of care - holding and supporting one another, and trying to weave back in to the tapestry of community those that are being cut out or those at the margins where it is starting to fray. Thank you. And may you find more ways to send love and compassion out to help weave us all back together! And thank you, especially, to Christian Peterson (aka Christian Kringle), who loaded up all of the items for deliver to FJDMV, and then went back today to move a huge bunch of toys. God can use every gift we have - especially a big truck!
