FROM THE RECTOR

A VIDEO MESSAGE FROM FATHER ANDREW

In this week's video, Father Andrew invites everyone to share in a joyful and meaningful weekend at

St. Gregory’s. This week's video is filmed from Harris Hall as he highlights Saturday’s annual ECW Bazaar, a beloved tradition filled with beautifully crafted items and the uplifting spirit of our community working together in ministry. Father Andrew also shares the special news that his dear friend Rabbi David Steinhardt, one of Boca Raton’s most respected faith leaders, will be the guest preacher at worship which will be followed by an enriching “Ask the Rabbi” conversation during coffee hour. Come, celebrate, and be part of this grace-filled weekend.

IMPACT

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

OUR NEW CONCERT SERIES

This year we have implemented a new concert series which is having a tremendous impact not only on our church but also on our community. Our newly renovated sanctuary is proving to be a great asset as many ensembles and performing artists are eager to perform within its beautiful environment which is not only pleasing to the eye and comforting for the soul, but is now an acoustic marvel in which music has never sounded better! We have many local groups which are now calling St. Gregory’s “home” such as the Boca Symphonia, The Master Chorale of South Florida, Seraphic Fire, and Candlelight Concerts. Our sacred space touches the lives of everyone who comes here to worship and who also comes here to attend these incredible concerts by these fantastic artists.

Coming up on November 16 will be Seraphic Fire’s second concert in our sanctuary this Fall entitled “Bach Motets” and November 23 is the season opener of the Boca Symphonia as they present “Mozart and Tim” which features “yours truly” playing our incredible pipe organ as the Symphonia and I perform Francis Poulenc’s Organ Concerto in g minor. December 13 brings another concert by The Master Chorale of South Florida entitled “Comfort and Joy” which again features our beautiful pipe organ with me as guest artist.

And on December 6, amid all this, will be the most important of all concerts, our very own “New Orleans Jazz Christmas” featuring the one and only jazz legend Wycliffe Gordon! Wycliffe returns with an all-new holiday show with very special guests “La Lucha” which is an up-and-coming jazz trio from Tampa, Florida. This will be a concert not to be missed as it pairs with our fabulous annual fundraiser auction and dinner.

Our concert series is truly making an astounding difference in our community as we have become a “home” to these extremely talented ensembles and artists where they can share their amazing talents and music in a space that is not only acoustically but spiritually satisfying. They are bringing the masses to us in ways we’ve not before experienced who are leaving with immense joy and a song in their hearts.

Blessings,

Tim Brumfield

Director of Music Ministries, Organist, and Choirmaster

HOPE GROWS HERE

HOPE GROWS HERE

STEWARDSHIP UPDATE

Hope Grows Here is this year’s Stewardship theme, and hope truly does grow at St. Gregory’s. It is evident in our worship, our ministries, and the life we share.

With the impact of rising costs, our Stewardship goal for 2026 has increased to $1,250,000. This represents an approximate 10% increase over last year’s goal, but it is essential to sustain and strengthen our many ministries. Increases in insurance premiums and our Diocesan assessment alone will add about $25,000 to our annual expenses. We anticipate that when the 2026 budget is complete, total operating costs will rise by 5–7%, or roughly $90,000. At the same time, one of our revenue sources is expected to decrease by approximately $50,000.

Together, through faithful giving, we can meet these challenges and continue to ensure that hope truly grows here at St. Gregory’s.

STEWARDSHIP SEASON

THERE IS STILL TIME TO SUPPORT

OUR MISSION AND MINISTRIES

As part of our Stewardship Sunday celebration last Sunday,

we are invited to come forward to the altar and

present our pledges as an act of faith and gratitude.

In this season of “Hope Grows Here,” our offerings become seeds of promise—nurturing ministry, mission, and spiritual growth within our church and community as we faithfully invest in the work God is doing among us.

SUPPORT NEEDED - HURRICANE RELIEF EFFORTS

Dear Beloved Members and Friends of St. Gregory’s,

In the wake of Hurricane Melissa, our hearts turn once again toward those whose lives have been upended by flooding, destruction, and loss. The devastation across much of the Caribbean and neighboring regions is profound. As people of faith, we are called to respond with compassion and generosity to be instruments of hope for our neighbors in need.

Our Bishop has called on all congregations in the Diocese of Southeast Florida to come together in support of those most affected. In response, we have established a Hurricane Melissa Relief Fund to collect financial donations that will be directed toward emergency relief and rebuilding efforts coordinated through our diocese and partner dioceses in the hardest-hit areas.

Every gift, large or small, will make a tangible difference for those who are struggling to recover. Your generosity will help provide food, clean water, medical aid, and resources for families who have lost so much.

As we gather for worship and prayer in the days ahead, I ask you also to pray for all who suffer in the storm’s aftermath, and for those working tirelessly to bring help, hope and healing.

“Give us above all the love for one another that is your best gift always.” -Bishop Peter Eaton

To contribute, please click the link below and select “Hurricane Melissa Relief Fund” from the dropdown menu: Give Now to Hurricane Melissa Relief Fund.

Thank you for standing with our brothers and sisters during this critical time. Together, we can make a meaningful difference and be a beacon of Christ’s love in action.

With gratitude and prayer,

Faithfully,

Andrew+

The Rev. Andrew J. Sheman

Rector, St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church

RESPONDING TO HURRICANE MELISSA

Supporting Partners

in the Caribbean in Response to Hurricane Melissa

Episcopal Relief & Development is in close contact with our partners, including local dioceses and agencies in Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti, as Hurricane Melissa continues to cause widespread devastation throughout the Caribbean region.

With wind speeds of 185 mph, Hurricane Melissa made landfall in southwestern Jamaica on October 29 as a Category 5 storm. The storm is the strongest hurricane in Jamaica’s history and one of the most powerful Atlantic storms on record. Causing major damage to public infrastructure, Hurricane Melissa has left approximately 77% of the island without power and displaced more than 6,000 people. A precise death toll and full understanding of damages are still difficult to determine as many areas remain inaccessible. However, severe flooding and landslides, dangerous storm surges and upwards of 30 deaths have been reported across Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti.

“Our local partners are assessing the needs of their community as the damage and long-term effects of this disaster become clearer,” said Eric Weaver, Director of Global Disaster Response & Resilience, Episcopal Relief & Development. “We stand by, ready to support them and the communities they serve as we learn more about the extent of damages and how best to target our response.”

Please pray for the people impacted by Hurricane Melissa. Donations to the Hurricane Relief Fund will support Episcopal Relief & Development and its partners as they respond.

For more than 80 years, Episcopal Relief & Development has been working together with supporters and partners for lasting change around the world. Each year the organization facilitates healthier, more fulfilling lives for close to 3 million people struggling with hunger, poverty, disaster and disease. Inspired by Jesus’ words in Matthew 25, Episcopal Relief & Development leverages the expertise and resources of Anglican and other partners to deliver measurable and sustainable change in three signature program areas: Women, Children and Climate.

33 MINUTES ON EMPATHY

WILL MEET IN THE PARISH LIBRARY

SUNDAYS FROM 9:12 AM - 9:45 AM

St. Gregory’s is bringing back our popular “33 Minutes” program on Sunday mornings. Join Rev. Robyn in the parish Library from 9:12 to 9:45 AM (between the 8 AM and 10 AM services of Holy Eucharist) for thirty-three minutes of discussion, teaching, and discovery.

We are reading the book, Don't Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart: How to Relate to Those Who Are Suffering, by Kenneth Haugk. The title is based on Proverbs 25: 20, which says that trying to offer cheer in misguided ways to someone who is suffering can actually increase their pain, discomfort, and feelings of isolation. As Christians, we often want to reach out to help those who are hurting—but the words or actions we use may unintentionally add to their burden instead of easing their pain. Forged from author Kenneth C. Haugk’s own experiences of suffering, the book draws on extensive research on empathy and compassion, offering key insights and suggestions of what to say and do—and what not to say or do—when people are hurting.

With its biblical foundation, compassionate approach, and concrete, practical ideas that you can use in your own life, our study of Don’t Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart will help us to bring God’s loving presence to hurting people when they need it most. A limited number of copies are available for purchase in the parish office for $15, and the book is also available for purchase here: https://www.stephenministries.org/On_Line_Store/viewitem.cfm?ItemID=467

“33 Minutes" will run through mid-December. One minute for each year of Christ’s life = 33 minutes to change your own. This program is co-sponsored by both the Center for Spiritual Formation and the Stephen Ministry program of Christ-centered caregiving at St. Gregory's.

MUSIC MINISTRY

A MESSAGE FROM TIM

I want to thank Ms. Susan Dodd for playing so beautifully and Ms. Anja Yargici for her beautiful solo at the 10 AM and Ms. Lori Snow for playing her flute so beautifully at the 8 AM.  I am always extremely grateful to those who make things go so smoothly when I’m away.

This Sunday we will welcome Rabbi David Steinhardt, Rabbi Emeritus at B’nai Torah Synagogue, as our guest preacher at the 10 AM service. The music will reflect both the scripture and the relationship between our faith traditions with special hymns, service music, and anthems. A unique addition to our service will be the congregational singing of “The Sh’ma” (Shema Yisrael) which is a Prayer from Deuteronomy used in the Jewish Morning and Evening Prayer services – Sh’ma Yisraeil, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One. When I was Cathedral Organist at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, we sang this ancient prayer every Sunday as a prelude to the reading of the Old Testament. The singing of The Sh’ma served as a tangible link and bridge to our Jewish heritage, and I’m excited to sing it this Sunday.

We will also read from Isaiah 65 the passage which is repeated in Revelation “For I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind… I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and delight in my people; no more shall the sound of weeping be heard in it, or the cry of distress…The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox; but the serpent-- its food shall be dust! They shall not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain, says the Lord.” The Choir will sing the incredibly stirring anthem by Edgar Bainton “And I Saw a New Heaven” which is the text from Revelation 21and is a direct paraphrase of Isaiah 65. We will also sing the hymn O Day of Peace that Dimly Shines to the tune Jerusalem by Hubert H. Parry which is again a paraphrase of Isaiah 65 as we sing the words “Then shall the wolf dwell with the lamb, nor shall the fierce devour the small…”

We will sing two other hymns which are reflective of our mutual faith traditions “Open your Ears O Faithful People” to the tune Torah Song and “The Strong Word did Cleave the Darkness” to the tune Ton-y-botel.

This will be a beautiful service bringing our two faith traditions together in a fresh and unique way as we welcome Rabbi Steinhardt and other members of B’nai Torah.

I hope you’ll put November 23, 3 pm on your calendar as I join the Boca Symphonia for an extraordinary concert featuring the Organ Concerto in g minor by Francis Poulenc. This monumental work features the diverse tonal colors of the organ, and its vast dynamic range from that of full organ to the softest pipes.

I’ll see you in church!

Blessings,

Tim

GRATITUDE

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU FROM THE SORENSENS

THANK YOU. Our gratitude for the kindness and love shown to our son Ryan last Sunday cannot be overstated but recognizing his sacrifice must not overshadow our remembrance, prayers and gratitude shown to all who have worn or now wear "our" uniform in service to our community and the nation.

Our nation was born in and sustained conflict over its 250-year history and it has always been the steadfast love and dedication to the founding principle to which we all swear an oath "One Nation Under God...." A second creed proclaimed by them and us that sustains us. It is bigger than one man's sacrifice...And yet....

A sincere thank you,

Jim and Rebecca Sorensen

Our journey to Confirmation for young people is a three-year program. Our program seeks to nurture the faith of our young people as they prepare for their high school years and beyond, giving them a solid foundation for a Christ-centered life. The Confirmation Class experience may also include retreats, service opportunities and other activities. All young people in grades 6, 7 and 8 can participate in and benefit from this class, regardless of whether or not they choose to be confirmed. Older teens, those transferring from other churches, or any others who are interested are most welcome to participate as well.

During Confirmation we explore:

-- The Bible and the stories that shape our life and faith

-- A life of prayer and worship led by and replenished by the Holy Spirit

-- A life of ministry and service as disciples of Jesus

-- The Anglican/Episcopal tradition in all its breadth and depth

"What makes you come alive?"

OUR THEME FOR 2025-2026: Building Beloved Community

In conjunction with St. Gregory's church-wide Beloved Community initiative we will work on how our lives and gifts reflect God's love in the world.

As we have in the past, we will continue to use some Benedictine practices to bring more balance, proportion and harmony into our lives.

SCENES FROM THE UPPER ROOM...

On Sunday, Nov 9th, we met in the Conference Room for a meditative experience featuring the 5-4-3-2-1 sensory centering method that Dr. Maria Patton and Eduardo Patton introduced us to in our session last month.

We moved around various stations that displayed an assortment of sensory-stimulating items -- shells, feathers, a Tibetan singing bowl, snack items (of course!), palm fronds, sea glass, bells, candles and many others. The fireplace channel on YouTube played on the large screen while Taize chants added soft background music.

Our Scripture lesson came from Job and focused on Job's affirmation of his belief in God and his hope in seeing God face to face one day. We contemplated what heaven might be like -- what we may see, hear, touch, smell and taste there. We closed our time, as always, in prayer, using the Prayers of the People written by the Confirmation Class for our All Saints service.

Many thanks to Silvia Hall for coordinating our pageant again this year! We look forward to great participation and a fantastic experience for our children!

A message from Silvia:

Pageant Calendar 2025 – Rehearsal Times

Sunday, Dec 7th – 11:45 am to 12:30 pm.

Sunday, Dec 14th – 11:45 am to 12:30 pm.

Sunday, 21st – 11:45 am to 1 pm. Pageant Rehearsal for everyone.

Costume fittings for the actors during Sunday School – I will try not to

interfere during that time, and we can start as early at 9:45AM.

A simple lunch will be served prior to the rehearsals, except on December 14th (Brothers’ Breakfast).

Wednesday, December 24th – Christmas Eve. The service begins at 4:00 pm.

Please arrive in Harris Hall at 3:15 pm. (Preschool children may arrive at 3:45 pm.) Volunteers will lead activities for the children, and we will provide a simple snack of pretzels and juice. The children will join their families in the pews after the pageant for the Eucharist.

We need volunteers to help us during rehearsal and on the day of the Pageant. Please sign up if you can help us!

I am so thankful for your patience and commitment and really looking forward to giving the children the opportunity to help the larger St. Gregory's family come close to the Mystery of Christmas! Thanks for making it all the way to the bottom of the email ;)

Service Ideas

Though school has started, there are still opportunities to do community service and earn hours! Try one of these ideas or come up with some of your own!

❤️ Write notes or make cards of encouragement

for seniors in local nursing homes.

Deliver them yourself (Boca Rehab is a great choice; 755 Meadows Rd, Boca) OR drop them off at church and Anita will deliver them!

❤️ Send a note of thanks or encouragement

to someone serving in the military.

Visit Operation Gratitude's website for great info and guidelines.

  ❤️ DIY Beach Clean Up

Grab a bag, gloves and/or grabber and hit the sand to pick up trash to keep our beaches clean, beautiful and hospitable for wildlife.

You'll be amazed at how much debris you can collect in even a few minutes of clean-up.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteers are needed for various ministries.

Our Lay Eucharistic Visitor volunteer group is looking for members of our St. Gregory’s family to join them as they:

1. Deliver communion and enrich the religious experience of those unable to attend church due to illness or incapacity.

2. Visit and spiritually support those in need of the comfort and companionship of St. Gregory’s

3. Maintain contact with those parishioners with whom they are assigned to assure them that they are still a part of our St. Gregory’s community.

If this type of ministry appeals to you, please contact David Cominole 561-376-9056 or email him at david.cominole@att.net for more information.
