TRANSFORMING HEARTS AND COMMUNITY THROUGH JESUS' LOVE.
| | |
Last Monday, Nov 13 our interfaith community gathered for an interactive Thanksgiving Seder at Temple Beth El in Boca.
We enjoyed reflections and table conversations as we joined in giving thanks and in prayers for one another and the world. BRIYA members participated in the service by presenting several readings. Many thanks to BRIYA coordinators, Gena Vallee and Cathy Berkowitz (B'nai Torah).

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
A Beautiful Orchestra of Sincerity, Hope, and Trust
|
This past Monday, the Boca Raton Interfaith Clergy Association led a Thanksgiving Seder hosted by Temple Beth El. In these times of endless war, it could’ve sounded like an evening destined for failure or an evening of comic relief: So a Rabbi, a Mormon, a Unitarian minister, a Muslim, an Interfaith Youth Association, and a Priest walk into a synagogue. But through God’s sheer determination and power to be One, over 100 people from all walks of faith and life showed up as candles to light the great I AM together.
It was a beautiful orchestra of sincerity, hope, and trust where the existential questions of life were deeply discussed: Who am I, why am I here, where am I going? The bush was aflame but not consumed. And for everyone who arrived with their presence and beings to hold the space collectively, I shout a loud: AMEN!
In deep thanksgiving,
Fr. Ben

WISDOM SCHOOL WITH FR. BEN
A Message of Gratitude
|
“We thank you for the splendor of the whole creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love.”
- The Book of Common Prayer
|
Dear Seekers and Seers,
Over the last seven years, I’ve been leading people through some of the great contemplative texts of Wisdom and Interspiritual Mysticism - through the flume of spiritual practice. What an absolute gift to join others at the banquet at the center of the world.
What began instinctually as an internal and external charge, became a prayer of the heart. And prayers of the heart happen, organically, in real-time. While I could sense this unfolding as one could sense a cup of tea in the hand, I had no agenda or interest in establishing a contemplative school. I simply had a yearning to be and to share. So I just rolled out of bed in the morning and said, “Reporting for duty!” I even gave a salute.
Never knowing what each day brings, I chose to make my effort my aim.
Years ago, people asked me if they could give to my Wisdom offerings a tax-deductible donation, an offering for simply pulling God out of the sky and into the proper places of our hearts. My answer then was, no.
I am now pleased to announce that I am my own 501(c)(3) that can receive your tax-deductible donations for the oblations I offer and receive in group work.
Thanks for the prompt. I listened to it, as St. Benedict wrote, with the ear of my heart.
The exchange we’ve had, and will continue to have together, is more necessary than our daily bread.
Thank you for your being. And thank you for your gift.
“Eat your fill of God’s delicacies, and you will be freed from hunger and begging." -Rumi
With a grateful heart,
-Fr. Ben+

A MESSAGE FROM TIM
Music Ministry
|
Have you ever wondered about the hymn tune names which appear in our Sunday programs and in the
annotations in the hymnal? These are the tunes to which the hymn texts are sung. Often, tunes are used for multiple hymns and our hymnal is a great example of multi-use tunes. Hymn tunes have become a part of
our identity with the Christian faith as many have been passed down through the ages with origins stemming from Gregorian Chant and even earlier psalmody. Some tunes were derived from secular folk music which
were re-purposed for religious hymns since many people already knew the tunes and could easily sing the newly written hymns to the familiar tunes.
Martin Luther is one of the more prominent figures associated with hymn tunes and texts. He composed tunes for various hymns as well as wrote entirely new texts, and he would often adapt plainsong as well as folk melodies to go with existing hymn texts.
The Ravenscroft Psalter of 1621 was the first English hymnal which paired texts to named tunes and often, publishers of various subsequent hymnals would have different names for the same tune.
Many hymns were composed in the 18th and 19th centuries as well as the tunes and often the tunes were
published separately from the hymn texts. In one decade alone, from 1791-1800, more than 8000 hymn tunes were printed in Great Britain and 7000- 8000 were printed in the United States. From 1801-1810 some 11,000 hymn tunes were published in Great Britain with more than 15,000 in the United States.
Our hymns are a valuable and viable part of our corporate worship as they often tell and retell the stories of the bible. Many authors and composers through the centuries have given to us a great gift through hymn texts and hymn tunes. I’ll be writing more about hymns and tunes in an upcoming series of articles for What’s Happening.
I’ll see you on Sunday!
Blessings to all,
Tim

Our blessing prayer used during this time:
Blessed Are You Who Bear the Light
by Jan Richardson
Blessed are you who bear the light
in unbearable times,
who testify to its endurance amid the unendurable,
who bear witness to its persistence when everything seems in shadow and grief.
Blessed are you in whom the light lives,
in whom the brightness blazes
— your heart a chapel,
an altar where in the deepest night can be seen
the fire that shines forth in you in unaccountable faith,
in stubborn hope,
in love that illumines every broken thing it finds.

A MESSAGE FROM THE REV. HEATHER SISK | | |
Heather Sisk was a beloved and active member of St. Gregory's who also served on our Vestry.
In recent years, Heather was ordained an Episcopal Priest and serves a congregation in New York.
Her husband Craig, who many of us knew and loved, recently died of cancer.
Heather sends this message of thanks to the St. Gregory's and St. Paul's communities.

A MESSAGE FROM REV. HEATHER SISK
Thank You for your Love and Support
|
My Dear Friends,
I’m writing to thank you for all of the love and support you have given me and Craig. You invited us into your home. We are so blessed to have found you at this time in our lives. Craig was so proud of this parish. Some of you in the 8 a.m. congregation did not get a chance to know him. Craig was a devoted husband; a Jewish man who attended our 10 a.m. services and participated in those aspects of the liturgy that share our Jewish heritage. He thought Jesus was GREAT. He always came to the altar rail for a blessing. He gave me feedback on my sermons and was my biggest cheerleader.
St. Paul's: You inspired him. Thank you! He enjoyed your company and greatly admired the community you've built. He felt he had met true elders at St. Paul’s. He believed the impact and respect of elders are critical to culture - and that we have lost that influence over the last few decades. Craig had another photography book in mind: He wished to photograph many of you and others, asking for a few words of wisdom that are part of your moral code - and that are important for our society to hear. He did not have that opportunity, but continued to discuss it with me even in his final weeks.
Craig was foremost a communicator. He loved conversation, trying to forge connection with everyone he encountered. He wanted to make people laugh. And on a deep level he wept and railed against the systems of the “World” like our prophets of old; he could frustrate people with his unwavering nerve to speak the truth: that so much of our cultural and political activities are not of the Kingdom of God.
At our wedding we had an instrumental version of “Across the Universe” by The Beatles played. It is an unusual selection for such an occasion, but the final lyrics give me consolation now. (As I’ve said in recent funeral sermons, we are not merely earthly "dust to dust and ashes to ashes," we are stardust. Jesus told us we are salt and we are LIGHT.)
“Sounds of laughter shades of life are ringing
through my open ears inciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which shines
around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe.”
With Love,
Your Sister in Christ Heather+
