MAKING A DIFFERENCE
SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL 2026
(June 14 – August 16)
Our Summer Sunday School 2026 just ended last Sunday with the annual Parish Picnic. The theme for this year was Peter Privett, “Living in a Fragile World: A Spiritual Exploration of Conservation and Citizenship Using the Methods of Godly Play”.
Peter Privett’s book is divided into (5) sessions, and we alternated the sessions with a book related to our summer theme. The sessions had been adjusted to reflect a crescendo:
Session 1 of the series starts with a wider view of our universe and our place in them and on this blue planet. God looked at it and gave its blessings: he says, ‘It is good’.
The phrase “We live in a fragile world and somethings things go bump in the night” repeats through the sessions and links the sessions together.
Session 2 brings the story of creation to the land and community and to the cities, and we wonder about if this connection with God is still there, as we go around our busy lives.
Session 3 we talk about the many gifts of God, including the gift of humanity: “from the waters came all manners of life, both great and small, including the gift of difference”, and how we all are part of this circle and we are bound to God.
Session 4 recaptures the interconnections of all things and how we feel when sometimes the light and life goes… and we are reminded we are part of this universe.
Session 5 we told the Easter Story: there was someone who loved to look at the night sky and see how beautiful and big it was… it creates a link with the story of Jesus, and how we are part of this universe and the universe is part of us.
The books we read in the class with their stunning illustrations and wonderful stories describe universal themes of light and interconnections, unity and care and share, of kindness and empathy and truth, of small daily choices and the difference they make and celebration of Earth's biodiversity and the vastness of the solar system.
Creation’s First Light written by Sandy Sasso, describes the Light in a way that transcends time, religions, and ethnic origins.
The Alphabet Tree written by Leo Lionni. What happens when a fierce wind threatens to blow all the little letters out of the alphabet tree…. they must band together in words—and then sentences—to create a message that’s even stronger than the wind: peace on earth.
Mira and the Big Story written by Laura Alary. Curiosity leads Mira across the river, to an "enemy" village where people have beliefs that are strange to her., to discover that the strangers are helpful and life is interconnected.
Peace written by Miranda Paul & Baptiste Paul. Explores how small acts like saying sorry, sharing, and pronouncing names correctly can make a difference.
When God Made the World by Matthew Paul Turner. It focuses on the complex way that God created our vast and scientifically operating universe, including the biodiversity of life on our planet and the intricacies of a vast solar system.
I will end with the beginning of this summer story by wondering: “I wonder if you have looked at the night sky and wonder how big it is, how far it extends... and I wonder how you feel to know that you are part of this universe and the universe is part of you.”
-Silvia Hall

A MESSAGE FROM TIM
I wish to thank those who covered for me these past two Sundays while I’ve been in Ky visiting my family—Michael Murray, organist, Casey Kunmann, soloist, and Lori Snow, flautist. They did a splendid job and I’m very grateful!
Our Summer Music Series continues this Sunday with Sam Cucci as soloist at the 10 am service. Sam will be singing a poem by Welsh-born English poet and priest George Herbert (1593-1633), set to music by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958). Vaughan Williams set to music four of Herbert’s poems dividing one, “Easter,” into two parts, and entitled the work “Five Mystical Songs” of which “Let all the World in Every Corner Sing” is a part. This as well as all of his English poems were originally published in a book entitled “The Temple”. Herbert said of his work “…he shall find in it a picture of the many spiritual conflicts that have passed between God and my soul, before I could subject mine to the will of Jesus, my Master.” Sam will also sing “Vouchsafe O Lord” from G. F. Handel’s (1685-1759) Te Deum in D Major. Handel composed this work to celebrate King George II’s victory at the Battle of Dettingen in 1743 and it was first performed in the Chapel Royal at St. James’ Palace in London. The Te Deum dates to the 4th century with Handel’s setting being one of the most familiar.
The Choir of St. Gregory’s returns on September 20 and I can’t wait! We will be welcoming several new members, and the coming season promises to be one of our most beautiful yet.
The church and the choir recently lost one of its most beloved and treasured members, Angela Frisbee. She and her husband, John, were faithful members of the choir for many, many years. There was not a kinder, gentler, or sweeter soul than Angela. She brightened every day with her infectious smile and laughter, and her grace and poise were indicative of a lady who possessed pure class. She will be greatly missed and our prayers go out to John as he mourns his beloved Angela. Their story is one of love as if from a fairy tale. Her funeral service will be this Saturday, Aug 22, at 11 am in the Nave.
Blessings! I’ll see you Sunday!
Tim

SCAM ALERT:
SPOOFING AND PHISHING ARE ON THE RISE
We have recently been made aware of scammers spoofing St. Gregory’s personal and church office email addresses. If you ever receive an email or text that seems unusual, urgent, or requests personal or financial information, please do not respond or click on any links and alert the church office at your earliest convenience. Unfortunately, these scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
When in doubt, pause and double-check the authenticity of the sender and contact the church office at office@st-gregorys.com. We are always here for you.
Additionally, The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles warns of widespread “DMV” text scams—please remember they will never contact you by text demanding payment or threatening suspension. Learn more from the FLHSMV Scam Alert page
The Federal Bureau of Investigation advises that phishing and “smishing” (text-based scams) often try to create urgency to trick you into clicking malicious links or sharing sensitive information. The safest approach is simple: stay alert, don’t click, don’t reply, and verify through official sources. Learn more at: Spoofing and Phishing — FBI

RESERVING ALTAR FLOWERS
TO HONOR A LOVED ONE
OR SPECIAL OCCASION
| |
Each Sunday, as we walk into the church, we are greeted by the beauty of our surroundings. In addition to our newly remodeled space, we now have stunning frontals for each church season, enhancing our worship environment. The flowers at the altar further enrich our worship experience. Sponsoring altar flowers on any given Sunday is a meaningful way to honor a loved one on their birthday, celebrate an anniversary, or pay tribute to someone special. The cost to sponsor flowers is $300. Your generous donation helps offset the cost of the flowers, and when multiple families sponsor together, the cost may be shared. The flowers serve as a beautiful and lasting expression of love and remembrance.
To learn more or to get the process started, please email the church office at office@st-gregorys.com.

SAFE CHURCH POLICIES
Working to assure the safety and well-being of
our children, youth, and all members
At St. Gregory's, we work hard to follow policies and guidelines designed to keep all of us as safe and as well as possible at church. The national Episcopal Church and our diocese have set forth policies and guidelines for all parishes to aid in this effort.
With particular regard to children and youth, St. Gregory's does the following:
+ Require all who work with children and youth, as well as other staff and persons in authority, to complete the Safe Church program through our diocese.
+ Require background checks for all relevant people, including Sunday School teachers, youth ministers, clergy, and regular volunteers.
+ Comply with our diocesan policies and guidelines.
As we have said in prior communications, we cannot guarantee anyone 100% safety. However, we can -- and do -- strive to do our very best to create a loving and safe space for everyone at our church.
If you would like more information about the Safe Church program
or St. Gregory's policies, please contact:

FIRST DAY OF REGULAR CLASSES FOR ALL!
9:10 am: Confirmation Class (Conference Room)
Confirmation Class meets every Sunday at 9:10 am
during the school year in the Conference Room (unless otherwise noted).
Our journey to Confirmation for young people is a three-year program. The Confirmation Class experience may also include retreats, service opportunities and other activities. All young people in grades 6, 7 and 8 can participate in and benefit from this class, regardless of whether or not they choose to be confirmed. Older teens, those transferring from other churches, or any others who are interested are most welcome to participate as well.
During Confirmation we explore:
-- The Bible and the stories that shape our life and faith
-- A life of prayer and worship led by and replenished by the Holy Spirit

Conversation, Reflection and Prayer -- with lots of Fun and Fellowship!
WHAT DO WE DO DURING UPPER ROOM TIME?
Following our pattern of Pause, Listen, Reflect, Pray and Go,
we build on our previous themes of
What will you do with your one wild and precious life?
(based on Mary Oliver's poem The Summer Day) and
"What makes you come alive?"
(from a quote by theologian and civil rights leader Howard Thurman)
"Building Beloved Community"
In conjunction with St. Gregory's church-wide Beloved Community initiative we worked on how our lives and gifts reflect God's love in the world.
Theme for 2026-2027 -- "I matter. I belong. I love."
We will delve more deeply into our core identity statement:
I am a beloved child of God.
I am a member of the Body of Christ.
I have a unique calling and purpose in this world.
As we have in the past, we continue to use some Benedictine practices to bring more balance, proportion, and harmony into our lives.
