TRANSFORMING HEARTS AND COMMUNITY THROUGH JESUS' LOVE.
| | | |
Dear Beloved Members of St. Gregory's,
Recently, a Florida state court ruled as of September 2025 that the prohibition of the open carry of firearms has been declared unconstitutional. However, openly carrying firearms in schools and government buildings, court houses, and at sporting events is still illegal. In response to these changes, congregations are developing and updating congregational policies. At our October vestry meeting, the vestry voted unanimously to prohibit the open carrying of firearms on our church campus. We are alerting the Boca Police Department and the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office of this change, as requested by the law enforcement community. We know of several other congregations in the area that have made a similar decision.
For the past several years, we have authorized the presence of an openly armed security officer to protect our worship services. I know this has been well received by our congregation. This will continue; indeed, the vestry is discussing adding a second security officer for our Sunday worship. I am grateful for their service. The new policy makes an exemption for authorized security personnel.
St. Gregory's staff recently received training from the Boca Police Department on church security. We have a close relationship with the Boca Police Department, which is regularly on our campus during the week to assist with our Meals with Meaning ministry. We are also working closely with the interfaith community on this subject, and there will be a special presentation on congregational safety at our November interfaith clergy gathering. We will provide guidance to our ushers and greeters about the enforcement of this policy. Signs will also be posted at entry points on our campus.
Finally, our St. Gregory's Security Committee will be reviewing all our security policies and making any additional recommendations to the vestry regarding the possession of weapons on campus and other security policies.
I am grateful for the careful attention to security by our church leadership. We are committed to ensuring that St. Gregory's remains a safe and holy place to gather to worship and serve all God's people in Jesus' name and with Jesus' love.
Below is some additional background information about the recent change in Florida state law.
In Christ,
Andrew+
Background:
Florida Statute § 790.053, which previously prohibited the open carry of firearms, has been declared unconstitutional by a Florida court as of September 2025. This ruling means that, as of September 25, 2025, it is generally legal for individuals who are not otherwise restricted from owning a firearm to openly carry one in public, but it remains unlawful in certain prohibited locations like schools and government buildings. Private property owners can still prohibit firearms on their property, and individuals must comply with these rules to avoid trespassing charges.
Key details of the ruling and its impact
- What the statute was: Florida Statute § 790.053 made it unlawful to openly carry a firearm or electric weapon.
-
Court ruling: Florida's First District Court of Appeal ruled the statute unconstitutional in McDaniels v. State of Florida, finding it conflicts with the Second Amendment right to carry arms openly for self-defense.
- Effective date: The ruling went into effect, making open carry legal for eligible individuals, starting September 25, 2025.
- Important exceptions:
- Prohibited locations: Openly carrying a firearm is still illegal in specific places such as schools, government buildings, courthouses, and sporting events.
- Private property: Private property owners and managers have the right to ban firearms on their property by posting clear signage at all entrances. Failure to leave after being asked can result in trespassing charges.
- Federal law: Federal laws that prohibit carrying firearms in certain areas still apply.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
MEET CATHERINE WALLACE
Catherine has lived in Boca since 2001, just down the street from St. Gregory’s. Originally from Fargo, ND, she is an eight-year U.S. Coast Guard veteran. Catherine had a career as an audiologist in the Raleigh-Durham area. She has been married for 25 years to her husband, Jeffrey, a Hospice Physician in Broward County.
In January 2023, Catherine began volunteering with the Meals with Meaning Outreach Program. Having been to Italy twice on cooking vacations, she offered to help Chef Rose Vallee in the St. Gregory’s kitchen. She and Rose have enjoyed many hours cooking for MWM catering events, Senior Socials, and the Sunday hot meals for our guests in need.
Catherine also manages the Meals with Meaning Instagram page, letting our community know that “Goodness Happens Here.” She helps write and secure grants for additional funding, and, as if that weren’t enough, she organizes and maintains the inventory for the MWM pantry. Have you noticed her working diligently there?
Catherine was part of the 2025 spring Newcomers class and was confirmed here at St. Gregory’s by Bishop Eaton in May. Since becoming a member of St. Gregory’s, Catherine has been invited by Rev. Robyn to serve on the Board of Directors for the Center for Spiritual Formation. In 2026, she will also join the Board of Directors for the Episcopal Charities Committee of Southeast Florida.
When not volunteering at St. Gregory’s, Catherine loves to travel. In March next year, she will visit Kurdistan to celebrate the Newroz (Spring Equinox) festival, and in September, she plans to hike the Inca Trail in Peru.
Is she resting on her laurels? No! Catherine saw a need and set out to meet it—the north and south columbaria here at St. Gregory’s. “As an avid hiker throughout Europe, most villages I walk through have some type of columbarium to honor loved ones. What I’ve noticed is that there is always someone sweeping, arranging flowers, tidying up—the caretaker. It’s a sacred, peaceful space. Looking at our spaces, I noticed that ours did not always look sacred and peaceful.”
So, Catherine started a new ministry—caretaker of the columbarium. She has cleaned the spaces and refreshed them with new plants, even adding pumpkins this fall for a touch of color.
Catherine has asked if anyone has indoor or outdoor plants they would like to donate to this new beautification project. If you have some plants, please contact Catherine and she will find them a new home in the columbarium. You can reach her at: Cath.Wallace65@gmail.com or 561-843-0466
Thank you, Catherine, for Making a Difference!

HOPE GROWS HERE
STEWARDSHIP UPDATE
Hope Grows Here is this year’s Stewardship theme, and hope truly does grow at St. Gregory’s. It is evident in our worship, our ministries, and the life we share.
With the impact of rising costs, our Stewardship goal for 2026 has increased to $1,250,000. This represents an approximate 10% increase over last year’s goal, but it is essential to sustain and strengthen our many ministries. Increases in insurance premiums and our Diocesan assessment alone will add about $25,000 to our annual expenses. We anticipate that when the 2026 budget is complete, total operating costs will rise by 5–7%, or roughly $90,000. At the same time, one of our revenue sources is expected to decrease by approximately $50,000.
Together, through faithful giving, we can meet these challenges and continue to ensure that hope truly grows here at St. Gregory’s.

St. Gregory's annual Stewardship drive is underway.
Our annual Pledge Card Sunday will be held on Sunday, November 9.

33 MINUTES ON EMPATHY
WILL MEET IN THE PARISH LIBRARY
SUNDAYS FROM 9:12 AM - 9:45 AM
St. Gregory’s is bringing back our popular “33 Minutes” program on Sunday mornings. Join Rev. Robyn in the parish Library from 9:12 to 9:45 AM (between the 8 AM and 10 AM services of Holy Eucharist) for thirty-three minutes of discussion, teaching, and discovery.
We are reading the book, Don't Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart: How to Relate to Those Who Are Suffering, by Kenneth Haugk. The title is based on Proverbs 25: 20, which says that trying to offer cheer in misguided ways to someone who is suffering can actually increase their pain, discomfort, and feelings of isolation. As Christians, we often want to reach out to help those who are hurting—but the words or actions we use may unintentionally add to their burden instead of easing their pain. Forged from author Kenneth C. Haugk’s own experiences of suffering, the book draws on extensive research on empathy and compassion, offering key insights and suggestions of what to say and do—and what not to say or do—when people are hurting.
With its biblical foundation, compassionate approach, and concrete, practical ideas that you can use in your own life, our study of Don’t Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart will help us to bring God’s loving presence to hurting people when they need it most. A limited number of copies are available for purchase in the parish office for $15, and the book is also available for purchase here: https://www.stephenministries.org/On_Line_Store/viewitem.cfm?ItemID=467
“33 Minutes" will run through mid-December. One minute for each year of Christ’s life = 33 minutes to change your own. This program is co-sponsored by both the Center for Spiritual Formation and the Stephen Ministry program of Christ-centered caregiving at St. Gregory's.

A MESSAGE FROM TIM
This past Sunday, we observed our first Choral Evensong for the Fall season, and I wish to thank the Choir of St. Gregory’s for a resplendent service! They sang beautifully! If you’ve never attended Choral Evensong, you are missing out!
As of this writing, I’m in route to NYC via JetBlue to perform at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine for the Halloween Extravaganza, accompanying the silent film from 1925, Phantom of the Opera. Both shows have been sold out for over two months! If you’d like to experience this, I’ll be doing the same show at St. Gregory’s next Wednesday, Oct 29! It’s free! So come on out! If you’d like to attend a pre-show lecture, demonstration, and wine reception, please check out the info included in this publication! I’ll be giving a history of the film and of the silent movie era, and I’ll give a demonstration of St. Gregory’s mighty Austin pipe organ, giving you a glimpse into how the music is made!
This Sunday, the choir will sing Sir Walford Davies’ (1869-1941)“Blessed are the Pure in Heart” which pairs beautifully with the reading from Luke’s Gospel of Jesus telling the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, ' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, `God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted."
Davies’s choral setting of John Keble’s text (1819) captures Keble’s sentiment with sublime and simple beauty. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see our God: The secret of the Lord is theirs, their soul is Christ’s abode. Still to the lowly soul He doth himself impart, and for his dwelling and his throne chooseth the pure in heart.
I’ll see you Sunday!
Tim
Tim at The Great Organ of The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, preparing for the Halloween Extravaganza featuring Tim playing his original score to the 1925 silent film The Phantom of the Opera. You can catch him playing the movie here at St Gregory’s on Wednesday, October 29.
| | | General Admission is free, but you don’t want to miss The Behind the Curtain Experience beginning at 5:30 PM which is $75! Click the button below to get your tickets now! | | |

Confirmation Class meets every Sunday at 9:10am
in the Conference Room (unless otherwise noted).
Our journey to Confirmation for young people is a three-year program. Our program seeks to nurture the faith of our young people as they prepare for their high school years and beyond, giving them a solid foundation for a Christ-centered life. The Confirmation Class experience may also include retreats, service opportunities and other activities. All young people in grades 6, 7 and 8 can participate in and benefit from this class, regardless of whether or not they choose to be confirmed. Older teens, those transferring from other churches, or any others who are interested are most welcome to participate as well.
During Confirmation we explore:
-- The Bible and the stories that shape our life and faith
-- A life of prayer and worship led by and replenished by the Holy Spirit
-- A life of ministry and service as disciples of Jesus
-- The Anglican/Episcopal tradition in all its breadth and depth
