MAKING A DIFFERENCE
The Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church
| |
On Friday, October 25 our annual convention for the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida gathers at the Chapel of St. Andrew on the grounds of St. Andrew's Episcopal School here in Boca Raton at 5 PM. Everyone is invited to attend this festive worship service, which gathers together our diocesan family that stretches from Key West to Stuart.
The special guest and preacher for this service will be the newly elected Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, the Right Reverend Sean Rowe. Bishop Rowe has led the Erie-based Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania since 2007, and also serves as Bishop Provisional of the Diocese of Western New York through a partnership the dioceses established in 2019. He previously served as Bishop Provisional of the Diocese of Bethlehem from 2014 to 2018. Originally from western Pennsylvania, Rowe is a Virginia Theological Seminary graduate (my seminary as well!) and was ordained to the priesthood in 2000 in Northwestern Pennsylvania, where he served in congregational ministry until his election as Bishop. He currently serves as parliamentarian of the House of Bishops and Executive Council. The Presiding Bishop has a range of responsibilities, as outlined by The Episcopal Church Constitution and Canons. Those include presiding over the House of Bishops, chairing Executive Council, visiting every Episcopal diocese, participating in the ordination and consecration of bishops, receiving and responding to disciplinary complaints against bishops, making appointments to the church’s interim bodies, and “developing policies and strategies for the church and speaking for the church on the policies, strategies and programs of General Convention.”
Bishop Rowe succeeds Bishop Michael Curry, who, has been such a dynamic leader focusing our attention on Jesus and the Gospel and the work of building the beloved community of God. Bishop Rowe has stated that he looks forward to helping "usher this church into whatever it is being called into in this next phase and season of life.” He adds, “we don’t exactly know what that is or what it looks like, but what we know is that God is in the midst of it and that love is the way, and if we continue to live and move ever more deeply into those ways that the world can be transformed around us in Jesus.”
I hope you can join me for this special worship service. It will make a difference!
In Christ,
Andrew+

A MESSAGE FROM TIM
By Tim Brumfield
| |
It was a joy to welcome back cellist Axel Rojas on Sunday for the 10AM service! He played beautifully! And many thanks to soloist Sam Cucci and the Choir of St. Gregory’s!
This Sunday at the 10 AM service, the Offertory Anthem, Bless the Lord, features text taken from Psalm 103 and was composed by a prominent Roman Catholic priest from the Diocese of Brooklyn, Joseph Roff (1911-1993). Roff composed music for the Roman liturgy both before and after the Second Vatican Council with over a thousand compositions spanning both periods which included hymns, anthems, psalm settings, and acclamations, as well as numerous orchestral works. A major contributor to the Gregorian Institute of America (GIA), Roff’s passing was the end of an era for music within the Roman Catholic Church. His works have transcended time and varying religious denominations with his anthems and service music remaining in demand throughout the Episcopal Church and other mainstream churches.
The Communion Anthem, The Lord Bless You and Keep You, is a setting of the famous “priestly blessing” also known as the Aaronic Blessing taken from the Book of Numbers composed by English composer, conductor, and arranger Sir John Rutter CBE (b. 1945) This blessing has been set to music by many composers throughout the centuries and Rutter’s setting has become one of the most beloved since its debut in 1981. Sir Rutter founded the Cambridge Singers in 1981 which he still conducts and who records and performs much of his choral works on his own record label Collegium Records. He has collaborated on numerous publications of choral works and editions and his music has been performed for several royal occasions including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee and the wedding of Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
I’ll see you in church!

Godly Play News Sunday October 13 2024
This past Sunday, Katherine Anderson told the story of the Flood and the Ark. This is a timely story, and it feels so real was we have witnessed the devastation and destruction of Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
The story is told with poetic language, such as, in explaining the reason for God sending the flood: " God decided to send a great flood of water to wash everything clean and make it new again. Then God saw a good family.”
Noah walked with God. And his wife Namah gathered the seeds that would sow new plants for the world in her apron.
As they were building the ark, animals began to come from all the four corners of the earth. They came two by two to fill the ark.
But God did not forget the creatures on the ark. After forty days and forty nights, the rain stopped. When the ark rested upon the Earth again, all the creatures came out. And they saw a great bow in the sky. It was a bow of many colors.
We all can see it today when there is rain and the sun is shining. We call it a rainbow. It is God’s sign, a reminder every time we see in the sky that God will never send such a flood again.
