TRANSFORMING HEARTS AND COMMUNITY THROUGH JESUS' LOVE.
| | | | | |
A VIDEO MESSAGE FROM FATHER ANDREW
In this week’s video, Father Andrew invites you to join a joyful and meaningful celebration of All Saints’ Sunday at St. Gregory’s. This principal feast day of the church year will honor the saints who inspire and surround us, featuring a special altar of remembrance where you’re encouraged to bring photos of your loved ones. The confirmation class will lead the Prayers of the People, and children will gather around the altar for communion in a beautiful expression of our church family’s unity. The morning will also include a ministry fair and another inspiring stewardship testimony. Don’t miss this special day of worship, remembrance, and community!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
THE SAINTS OF GOD
As we observe our All Saints celebration, I thought this was a good time to highlight how the saints of God make a difference. In the Episcopal Church we talk about how we pray WITH the saints not TO the saints. They are our companions in faith, who inspire and encourage us. I find their presence a source of immense blessing.
This Sunday we're featuring at the altar images of five saints who have a direct connection with our life at St. Gregory's. I hope you enjoy making deeper acquaintance with these saints of God whose presence enriches our life of faith.
In Christ,
Andrew+

St. Francis of Assisi
St. Francis, who died on October 3, 1226, was an Italian mystic, poet and friar who founded the religious order of the Franciscans. Inpired to lead a life of poverty, he became a beggar and itinerant preacher. Francis is among the most admired of the saints, but few have attained to his total identification with poverty and the suffering of Christ. He was known for his boundless compassion and unconquerable joy. He is also known for his celebration of creation and love for all God's creatures. St. Gregory's, like many churches, particular honor him during our annual Blessings of the Pets service on the Saturday closest to his feast day of October 4.

St. Brigid (Bride) of Kildare
St Brigid, commonly known as "Bride," is among the most beloved of Irish saints. She was born in the middle of the 5th century and may have met St. Patrick as a young girl. She was raised in a Druid household and was the daughter of a renowned poet. However, from an early age she decided to dedicate her life to God alone as a Christian. In 470 she founded a nunnery in Kildare, Here had flourished the cult of a pagan goddess, from which it was said to have derived the sacred fire, which she and her successors maintained. Brigid actively participated in policy making decisions in Church conventions and one story has it that she received episcopal orders. She was known for her compassion for the poor and needy. St. Gregory's chapter of the Daughters of the King claims her as their patron saint.

The Reverend Pauli Murray
The Reverend Pauli Murray (Nov. 20, 1910-July 1, 1985) was the first African American female priest. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised in Durham, North Carolina. Murray graduated from Hunter College in 1933, and from Howard University Law School in 1944. Her senior thesis at Howard challenged the separate-but-equal principle behind segregation. It was used by lawyers in the 1954 U. S. Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education. She also earned a master’s degree at the University of California School of Law in 1945. After teaching at the University of Ghana Law School in West Africa, she returned to the United States where she earned a Doctor of Juridical Science degree from the Yale Law School in 1965. Murray joined the faculty of Brandeis University in 1968. She resigned to matriculate at the General Theological Seminary in 1973, where she earned a Master of Divinity degree in 1976. On Jan. 8, 1977, Murray was ordained the first African American female priest. In 2021, a documentary film of her life story, "My Name is Pauli Murray" was produced and is available on streaming services. She is an inspiration to the beloved community God is building at St. Gregory's.

Mother Carmen Rendiles
Mother Maria Rendiles Aug. 11, 1903-May 9, 1977) was canonized by Pope Leon XIV on October 19, 2025 becoming the first female saint from Venezuela. Feeling a deep calling to the religious life, Mother Carmen joined the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament on 25 February 1927. After completing her studies in Toulouse, France, she received her religious habit on 8 September 1927. She was dedicated to serving the needs of the people with great compassion and established convents and schools in both Venezuela and Colombia, including a school for underprivileged children located in her own family home upon inheriting it. Blessed Carmen's leadership skills and devotion to her calling were recognized by her peers, and in 1965 she founded the Servants of Jesus of Caracas. She dedicated the rest of her life to serving as the superior of this new congregation, leading by example and inspiring others in their religious vocations. Her legacy of faith, perseverance, and selfless service continues to inspire the faithful and the religious community she established. But for the St. Gregory's community, she is now treasured as the great aunt of Juan Lopez and Maria Lopez Patten, beloved members of our congregation.

Gregory the Great
Only two Popes, Leo I and Gregory I, have been given the popular title of "the Great." He was born in 540 and became Prefect of Rome in 573. He then became a monk and founded a monastic community at his ancestral home. He was appointed as an Ambassador to Constantinople where he learned much about the larger affairs of the Church. Upon his return to Rome in 590, he was elected as Pope after the death of Pope Pelagius. During the attacks against Rome, he organized the city's defenses and fed the population from the papal granaries. He was recognized for the energy and effectiveness of his leadership. He also ordered the Church's liturgy and chant, known today as a "Gregorian Chant," which has molded the spirituality of the Church to this day. He also prepared and fostered the Christian mission to the Anglo-Saxons under Augustine and other monks from his monastery, earning the title: "the Apostle to the English." He died on March 12, 604. He was a "Servant of the servants of God." St. Gregory's proudly claims him as our patron saint.

HOPE GROWS HERE
STEWARDSHIP UPDATE
Hope Grows Here is this year’s Stewardship theme, and hope truly does grow at St. Gregory’s. It is evident in our worship, our ministries, and the life we share.
With the impact of rising costs, our Stewardship goal for 2026 has increased to $1,250,000. This represents an approximate 10% increase over last year’s goal, but it is essential to sustain and strengthen our many ministries. Increases in insurance premiums and our Diocesan assessment alone will add about $25,000 to our annual expenses. We anticipate that when the 2026 budget is complete, total operating costs will rise by 5–7%, or roughly $90,000. At the same time, one of our revenue sources is expected to decrease by approximately $50,000.
Together, through faithful giving, we can meet these challenges and continue to ensure that hope truly grows here at St. Gregory’s.

St. Gregory's annual Stewardship drive is underway.

RESPONDING TO HURRICANE MELISSA
Supporting Partners in the Caribbean in Response to Hurricane Melissa
October 29, 2025
Episcopal Relief & Development is in close contact with our partners, including local dioceses and agencies in Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti, as Hurricane Melissa continues to cause widespread devastation throughout the Caribbean region.
With wind speeds of 185 mph, Hurricane Melissa made landfall in southwestern Jamaica on October 29 as a Category 5 storm. The storm is the strongest hurricane in Jamaica’s history and one of the most powerful Atlantic storms on record. Causing major damage to public infrastructure, Hurricane Melissa has left approximately 77% of the island without power and displaced more than 6,000 people. A precise death toll and full understanding of damages are still difficult to determine as many areas remain inaccessible. However, severe flooding and landslides, dangerous storm surges and upwards of 30 deaths have been reported across Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti.
“Our local partners are assessing the needs of their community as the damage and long-term effects of this disaster become clearer,” said Eric Weaver, Director of Global Disaster Response & Resilience, Episcopal Relief & Development. “We stand by, ready to support them and the communities they serve as we learn more about the extent of damages and how best to target our response.”
Please pray for the people impacted by Hurricane Melissa. Donations to the Hurricane Relief Fund will support Episcopal Relief & Development and its partners as they respond.
For more than 80 years, Episcopal Relief & Development has been working together with supporters and partners for lasting change around the world. Each year the organization facilitates healthier, more fulfilling lives for close to 3 million people struggling with hunger, poverty, disaster and disease. Inspired by Jesus’ words in Matthew 25, Episcopal Relief & Development leverages the expertise and resources of Anglican and other partners to deliver measurable and sustainable change in three signature program areas: Women, Children and Climate.

ALL SAINTS SUNDAY
IS THIS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2
As we have in prior years, we will all worship together for All Saints at the 10am service.
There will be no Rise & Shine service, regular Sunday School classes for PreK - 5th grades, or Upper Room Time for teens on this day.
Confirmation Class will meet at 9:10am in the Church!
There will be opportunities for children and youth to participate as ushers, greeters, readers, etc. We will also be part of the procession. Please gather in the courtyard no later than 9:45 am.
"For centuries the church has confronted the human community with role models of greatness. We call them saints when what we really often mean to say is 'icon,' 'star,' 'hero,' ones so possessed by an internal vision of divine goodness that they give us a glimpse of the face of God in the center of the human. They give us a taste of the possibilities of greatness in ourselves." ~ Joan D. Chittister in A Passion for Life

33 MINUTES ON EMPATHY
WILL MEET IN THE PARISH LIBRARY
SUNDAYS FROM 9:12 AM - 9:45 AM
St. Gregory’s is bringing back our popular “33 Minutes” program on Sunday mornings. Join Rev. Robyn in the parish Library from 9:12 to 9:45 AM (between the 8 AM and 10 AM services of Holy Eucharist) for thirty-three minutes of discussion, teaching, and discovery.
We are reading the book, Don't Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart: How to Relate to Those Who Are Suffering, by Kenneth Haugk. The title is based on Proverbs 25: 20, which says that trying to offer cheer in misguided ways to someone who is suffering can actually increase their pain, discomfort, and feelings of isolation. As Christians, we often want to reach out to help those who are hurting—but the words or actions we use may unintentionally add to their burden instead of easing their pain. Forged from author Kenneth C. Haugk’s own experiences of suffering, the book draws on extensive research on empathy and compassion, offering key insights and suggestions of what to say and do—and what not to say or do—when people are hurting.
With its biblical foundation, compassionate approach, and concrete, practical ideas that you can use in your own life, our study of Don’t Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart will help us to bring God’s loving presence to hurting people when they need it most. A limited number of copies are available for purchase in the parish office for $15, and the book is also available for purchase here: https://www.stephenministries.org/On_Line_Store/viewitem.cfm?ItemID=467
“33 Minutes" will run through mid-December. One minute for each year of Christ’s life = 33 minutes to change your own. This program is co-sponsored by both the Center for Spiritual Formation and the Stephen Ministry program of Christ-centered caregiving at St. Gregory's.

A MESSAGE FROM TIM
Last evening, we had almost 200 come out for the screening of the 1925 film classic, Phantom of the Opera! If you missed it, hope to see you there next year!
Coming up in November, I’ll be joining the Boca Symphonia performing Francis Poulenc’s Organ Concerto in g minor. This incredible work shows off the myriads of tonal colors of our pipe organ from that of full organ, to the softest of pipes, and everything in between! The piece is a beautiful work of melodic sensibilities as Poulenc masterfully weaves together the two entities of the mighty pipe organ and a string orchestra. I hope you’ll consider coming out to hear the Symphonia and me present this monumental work right here at St. Gregory’s!
This Sunday is All Saints Sunday! Sunday’s choral mass setting, Mass for The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, was composed in 1998 during my tenure as Cathedral Organist. It had its debut at the Cathedral in 1998 by the Cathedral Choir and Choristers and at Lincoln Center in 2015 when it was performed in concert by the National Chorale at David Geffen Hall (formerly Avery Fisher Hall.) The Offertory Anthem, The Saints of God, was composed by New York City composer James Bassi. A resident of Queens, New York, Jim was a choral section leader and resident composer at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. He has served as musical director for several Broadway productions and his music has been premiered around the world and in the USA including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The Communion Meditation is taken from the Requiem by Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924). Requiem was composed in the late 1800’s and completed in 1900. Fauré wrote of the work "Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest."
We will be joined by guest musicians Michael O’Gieblyn, violin, and Aziz Sapaev, cello.
I’ll see you Sunday!
Tim

SCENES FROM THE UPPER ROOM...
On Sunday, Oct 26 we were treated to a special presentation entitled "Psychology and Soul Care" by Dr. Maria Patton, clinical psychologist and leader of Patton Psychology Associates. She is also a member of St. Gregory's and mother of Youth Group members Eduardo and Nico. Older son Apollo, a beloved former Youth Group member and current college student, was also present!
Maria led us in conversation about caring for our souls (from the Greek psyche and the origin of the word psychology) and gave us more insight into common psychological challenges such as catastrophizing, confusing emotion with fact, and magnifying negativity. With the help of son Eduardo, she also taught us some simple methods ("brain hacks") to keep us from spiraling down into negativity. Later on, after church, Maria met with parents to review some of these topics while we had fun in the Youth Room!
Scroll down to read more about one of the brain hacks -- the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding method -- that can help us to remain calm and centered in stressful situations.
Many thanks to Maria and Eduardo for a fantastic presentation! They will be back for more sessions during the coming year so that we can dive more in depth into the concepts that were introduced.
| | THE 5-4-3-2-1 GROUNDING METHOD | | |
The 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique is a mindfulness exercise used to help calm anxiety and bring focus to the present moment.
How to Perform:
- 5 things you can see: Look around and identify five objects in your surroundings.
- 4 things you can touch: Focus on four objects or sensations of touch, such as the texture of your clothes or the warmth of a cup in your hand.
- 3 things you can hear: Listen to three distinct sounds, such as the ticking of a clock or the traffic outside.
- 2 things you can smell: Identify two scents, such as the aroma of coffee or the fresh air.
- 1 thing you can taste: Notice a taste in your mouth, even if it's just your own saliva.
Benefits:
- Reduces anxiety and stress
- Improves focus and concentration
- Promotes mindfulness and grounding
- Helps regulate emotions
- Can be used in various situations, such as during panic attacks or when feeling overwhelmed
| | |
Our closing prayer for this Sunday:
Heavenly Father, I bring to You my worries and unsettled feelings.
You know all that I am going through.
I choose to give You my stress and anxiety.
I thank You for Your peace and love.
Help me to trust Your plan for my life.
Amen.
