A VIDEO MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR
In this week’s video, Father Andrew invites us into the beginning of Holy Week with Palm Sunday, describing it as a sacred and powerful time in the life of the Church. He highlights the special services at both 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM, including the Palm Sunday procession and the moving retelling of the Passion story by St. Gregory’s confirmation class and older teens. Father Andrew encourages all to fully enter into the story of Christ through the week’s services, making it a priority to participate in this meaningful and transformative journey of faith.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
YOUTH LEADING THE WAY!
| | |
As a long-time Youth Minister, one of my pet peeves is this phrase: The youth are the future of the church! Certainly true in some respects, but I want to emphasize that they are also -- like all of us -- the church right now! I am particularly blessed in that I get to spend time with them regularly during our Upper Room Time for Teens and during Youth Group activities. They not only learn, but also teach, lead and delight me in so many ways and it is a blessing and privilege to honor their offerings.
One such offering I want to highlight is their participation as lectors during our Sunday worship services. It is not easy to stand behind a microphone and read Scripture or prayers (often with baffling pronunciations!) to a large congregation. Our teen lectors are not only willing to do this, but do this with enthusiasm as a way to share their gifts with our church family.
This Sunday our teens will present the Passion Story for Palm Sunday during our 10am service. You will hear four of our teens as narrators and as Jesus. You will see our other teens presenting a series of tableaux to help you visualize the various scenes. Many, many thanks to our readers and to all our tableaux participants.
In seeing and hearing these young people, I hope you are blessed by the grace with which they make this offering and are encouraged about the future of the church. We hope to see you there!
In Christ's Name,
Anita Sherman

MASTER CHORALE
OF SOUTH FLORIDA
AT ST. GREGORY'S
SONDHEIM & FRIENDS
Sunday, March 29, 2026 | 4 PM
No composer has had a more profound influence on Broadway than Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim elevated the American musical by choosing themes that spoke to the human experience and by imbuing his works with sophistication and complexity. His musicals set high standards that continue to make them popular and relevant to this day. In these performances, Brett Karlin and the Master Chorale of South Florida will celebrate Sondheim with a selection of his most iconic songs and illustrate how his influence on other composers changed Broadway forever. HOLY WEEK SERVICES:
AN IN-DEPTH LOOK WITH TIM BRUMFIELD
This week, we celebrate Palm Sunday which is rich in symbolism and ceremony as we trace the steps of Jesus through his triumphal entry into Jerusalem to his condemnation. This service of worship begins our Holy Week and sets the stage for all the services yet to follow. If you’ve never experienced the various services of Holy Week, I strongly urge you to avail yourself of this powerful journey of meditation and soul searching. Each service takes us deeper into the chasm of our souls with Tenebrae, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and finally that of the Easter Vigil which is one of my favorite services.
Tenebrae, a service of music and readings, is one of the most beautiful and takes place at 6 PM on Wednesday, April 1, and features the Schola Cantorum Singers. The name Tenebrae (the Latin word for “darkness” or “shadows”) has for centuries been applied to the ancient monastic night and early morning services (Matins and Lauds) of the last three days of Holy Week, which in medieval times came to be celebrated on the preceding evening. Apart from the chant of the Lamentations, the most conspicuous feature of the service is the gradual extinguishing of candles and other lights in the church until only a single candle, considered a symbol of our Lord, remains. Toward the end of the service this candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil. At the very end, a loud noise is made, symbolizing the earthquake at the time of the resurrection (Matthew 28:2), the hidden candle is restored to its place, and by its light all depart in silence.
Maundy Thursday, with services at 12 noon and 6 pm on Thursday, April 2, is a Holy Feast Day marking the beginning of the Paschal Tridium and commemorates the Washing of Feet and the Last Supper of Christ with the Apostles. “Maundy” comes from the Latin word mandatum, or commandment, reflecting Jesus’ words “I give you a new commandment.” The symbolism of foot washing is powerful as we are reminded that we are to serve others before ourselves. The 12 noon service will feature soloist Anja Yargici and the 6 PM service will feature the Schola Cantorum Singers. At the end of the 6 PM service, the Altar is stripped, and soloist Sam Cucci sings the beautiful and haunting hymn “Go to Dark Gethsemane” as the all-night vigil begins into Good Friday.
Good Friday at 12 noon features the traditional Anglican service of The Three Hours which remembers in word and song, in silence and prayer, Jesus' final three hours on the cross. The rhythm of the service is meditative, its pace graceful and unhurried. Worshippers who cannot stay for the entire three hours are invited to enter and depart during the periods of silent meditation. The first hour features music by the Choir of St. Gregory’s and the reading of the Passion Gospel. The Second and Third hours features spoken meditations and a journey through the Stations of the Cross, with Lori Snow playing the flute between the second and third hours as we venerate the cross. The 6 PM service is a much shorter service with soloist Sam Cucci singing the spiritual “Were you there when they crucified my Lord.” We end with the singing of the ancient hymn “Sing my Tongue, the Glorious Battle” to the Gregorian Chant tune, Pange Lingua.
Easter Vigil, Saturday, April 4, 6 PM. On this holy night Christians gather throughout the world to celebrate Christ’s Passover from death to life. The early Christians continued to observe the first Passover in which God delivered the people of Israel from slavery at the hands of Pharaoh. They understood the death and resurrection of Christ as their passing over from death to life, from darkness to light, from the bondage of sin to the freedom of a new life of grace. On the night before Easter, they baptized those who had been prepared during Lent, and observed a night vigil, awaiting the coming of the Lord.
At Easter Vigil, we, too, gather in vigil and prayer. A new fire is kindled, representing the new creation we share in Christ. We follow the Paschal (Passover) candle in procession, a pillar of fire which is for us the light of Christ’s resurrection. As the light spreads among us, we sing an ancient hymn that extols the great joy and glory of this night of nights.
Then, using primal narratives from the Hebrew scriptures, we tell some of the greatest stories of our faith. Their power is unleashed for us as we partake of the new life of Jesus’ resurrection.
Next, we renew our baptismal vows, promising, with God’s help, to live as the body of Christ in the coming year of grace. On this night we join with Christians around the world as new sisters and brothers in Christ are plunged into the waters of death, then reborn as children of God.
We then announce the Easter Proclamation: “Alleluia, Christ is risen! The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia.” As the Festival Trumpets of the organ sound in fanfare, our joy resounds in the singing of the ‘Gloria in Excelsis’ and the ringing of the bells. It continues as we hear again the story of Christ’s resurrection and its meaning for our lives in the reading from Romans and the gospel of Matthew.
We keep this wondrous night in the spirit of vigil, our lamps lit, awaiting Christ’s coming, both now and at the end of time. At the Lord’s table we meet our risen Lord, as we feast on the food of the promised land. But this night is only the beginning of the great fifty days of Easter, in which we shout our alleluias and celebrate the great banquet of Christ’s victory.
I hope you’ll join me as we journey through Holy Week together experiencing its holy beauty as we renew ourselves in Christ.
I’ll see you in church!
Tim

SCAM ALERT:
SPOOFING AND PHISHING ARE ON THE RISE
We have recently been made aware of scammers spoofing St. Gregory’s personal and church office email addresses. If you ever receive an email or text that seems unusual, urgent, or requests personal or financial information, please do not respond or click on any links and alert the church office at your earliest convenience. Unfortunately, these scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
When in doubt, pause and double-check the authenticity of the sender and contact the church office at office@st-gregorys.com. We are always here for you.
Additionally, The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles warns of widespread “DMV” text scams—please remember they will never contact you by text demanding payment or threatening suspension. Learn more from the FLHSMV Scam Alert page
The Federal Bureau of Investigation advises that phishing and “smishing” (text-based scams) often try to create urgency to trick you into clicking malicious links or sharing sensitive information. The safest approach is simple: stay alert, don’t click, don’t reply, and verify through official sources. Learn more at: Spoofing and Phishing — FBI
