MAKING A DIFFERENCE
THE DIOCESAN CONVENTION
Our weekly making a difference story usually features an individual or a ministry group, however, today's story features an annual gathering—the convention of the Diocese of Southeast, Florida. Our diocese, which extends from Key West to Stuart, in Martin County along the east coast of Florida, includes:
- 76 churches throughout six regions including the Keys, North and South Dade, Broward, and North and South Palm Beach
- 276 clergy ministering to over 33,000 parishioners
- A variety of diocesan ministries and outreach programs, including our Immigration and Social Justice Ministry
- 18 schools educating thousands of children Grades PreK-12
Every October, clergy and lay delegates from every congregation gather to, in the words of beloved prayer, "take council for the mission of the church."
We are blessed because this gathering takes place at the Chapel of St. Andrew, located on the campus of St. Andrew's Episcopal School here in Boca Raton. Visitors are welcome to witness the proceedings, tour the ministry display areas and participate in the special workshops. The highlight every year for me is the convention Eucharist on Friday evening when we gather as a diocesan family to worship God.
The convention begins Friday, October 17 at 1 pm. The convention Eucharist begins at 5:30 pm on Friday night. The convention resumes on Saturday morning at 8:30 am with Morning Prayer with workshops, including one featuring the South Florida Haiti Project, which I will lead, at 10 am. To learn more and for all the details, go to our diocesan website: wwwdiosef.org.
Please pray for the convention and experience it in person as the mission of the Episcopal Church is renewed by the power of the Holy Spirit. What a difference God makes!
In Christ,
Andrew+

HOPE GROWS HERE
STEWARDSHIP SEASON BEGINS ON SUNDAY
Hope Grows Here is this year’s Stewardship theme, and hope truly does grow at St. Gregory’s. It is evident in our worship, our ministries, and the life we share.
With the impact of rising costs, our Stewardship goal for 2026 has increased to $1,250,000. This represents an approximate 10% increase over last year’s goal, but it is essential to sustain and strengthen our many ministries. Increases in insurance premiums and our Diocesan assessment alone will add about $25,000 to our annual expenses. We anticipate that when the 2026 budget is complete, total operating costs will rise by 5–7%, or roughly $90,000. At the same time, one of our revenue sources is expected to decrease by approximately $50,000.
Together, through faithful giving, we can meet these challenges and continue to ensure that hope truly grows here at St. Gregory’s.

33 MINUTES ON EMPATHY
WILL MEET IN THE PARISH LIBRARY
SUNDAYS FROM 9:12 AM - 9:45 AM
St. Gregory’s is bringing back our popular “33 Minutes” program on Sunday mornings. Join Rev. Robyn in the parish Library from 9:12 to 9:45 AM (between the 8 AM and 10 AM services of Holy Eucharist) for thirty-three minutes of discussion, teaching, and discovery.
We are reading the book, Don't Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart: How to Relate to Those Who Are Suffering, by Kenneth Haugk. The title is based on Proverbs 25: 20, which says that trying to offer cheer in misguided ways to someone who is suffering can actually increase their pain, discomfort, and feelings of isolation. As Christians, we often want to reach out to help those who are hurting—but the words or actions we use may unintentionally add to their burden instead of easing their pain. Forged from author Kenneth C. Haugk’s own experiences of suffering, the book draws on extensive research on empathy and compassion, offering key insights and suggestions of what to say and do—and what not to say or do—when people are hurting.
With its biblical foundation, compassionate approach, and concrete, practical ideas that you can use in your own life, our study of Don’t Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart will help us to bring God’s loving presence to hurting people when they need it most. A limited number of copies are available for purchase in the parish office for $15, and the book is also available for purchase here: https://www.stephenministries.org/On_Line_Store/viewitem.cfm?ItemID=467
“33 Minutes" will run through mid-December. One minute for each year of Christ’s life = 33 minutes to change your own. This program is co-sponsored by both the Center for Spiritual Formation and the Stephen Ministry program of Christ-centered caregiving at St. Gregory's.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO JOINED US FOR
THE BLESSING OF THE PETS LAST SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2025
A HUGE thank you to everyone who joined us at last Saturday's Blessing of the Pets!
St. Gregory’s had a wonderful turnout for this cherished annual tradition, celebrating the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. The weather was beautiful as pets of all shapes and sizes: dogs, cats, a turtle, and more gathered in the courtyard to receive a special blessing. Special thanks to our amazing volunteers and youth who helped during the day - and for those who contributed cans or bags of pet food to the Youth Group's Pet Food Drive! You have helped to feed many shelter pets! Tri-County Rescue joined the Blessing of the Pets and was the grateful recipient of the donated food. BIG thanks to Anita Sherman for organizing the pet food drive and donation to Tri-County.
It was a joyful morning filled with wagging tails, laughter, and gratitude for all of God’s creatures.

A MESSAGE FROM TIM
This Sunday, the music will include Joseph Roff’s (1910-1993) exciting anthem “Bless the Lord” based on Psalm 103:1. Roff worked as both a church musician and a priest in the Roman Catholic Church, serving in the Diocese of Brooklyn, composing anthems and music for the liturgy with over 1000 compositions accredited to his career. His many anthems were particularly suitable for parish choirs as they were well-constructed harmonically, and melodically satisfying.
For Communion, the choir will sing “Bread of the World” by John West (1863-1929). The text by Anglican Bp. Reginald Herber (1783-1826) is one of the most popular sacred texts set to music by countless composers and West’s setting is one of the most beautiful within the lexicon of Anglican music. John Ebenezer West was born in Hackney, London and first studied music with his father who was the founder of the North-East London Academy of Music. His mother was a professional soprano, and his sister was a professional contralto, pianist, and teacher. He went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music holding organist posts at several London churches and in 1884 he became an associate editor with Novello and Company in London where he was later appointed as chief editor. West published over 500 compositions and was a pioneer in the field of choral and organ music editing.
I’ll see you in church!
Tim

RESERVING ALTAR FLOWERS
TO HONOR A LOVED ONE
OR SPECIAL OCCASION
| |
Each Sunday, as we walk into the church, we are greeted by the beauty of our surroundings. In addition to our newly remodeled space, we now have stunning frontals for each church season, enhancing our worship environment. The flowers at the altar further enrich our worship experience. Sponsoring altar flowers on any given Sunday is a meaningful way to honor a loved one on their birthday, celebrate an anniversary, or pay tribute to someone special. The cost to sponsor flowers is $300. The flowers serve as a beautiful and lasting expression of love and remembrance.
To learn more or to get the process started, please email the church office at office@st-gregorys.com.

Confirmation Class: LIFE IN CHRIST (Grades 6, 7, 8 and others)
Confirmation Class meets every Sunday at 9:10am
in the Conference Room (unless otherwise noted).
Our journey to Confirmation for young people is a three-year program. Our program seeks to nurture the faith of our young people as they prepare for their high school years and beyond, giving them a solid foundation for a Christ-centered life. The Confirmation Class experience may also include retreats, service opportunities and other activities. All young people in grades 6, 7 and 8 can participate in and benefit from this class, regardless of whether or not they choose to be confirmed. Older teens, those transferring from other churches, or any others who are interested are most welcome to participate as well.
During Confirmation we explore:
-- The Bible and the stories that shape our life and faith
-- A life of prayer and worship led by and replenished by the Holy Spirit
-- A life of ministry and service as disciples of Jesus
-- The Anglican/Episcopal tradition in all its breadth and depth

UPPER ROOM TIME
Conversation, Reflection, and Prayer -- with lots of Fun and Fellowship!
| |
WHAT DO WE DO DURING UPPER ROOM TIME?
Following our pattern of Pause, Listen, Reflect, Pray and Go,
we will build on our previous themes of
What will you do with your one wild and precious life?
(based on Mary Oliver's poem The Summer Day) and
"What makes you come alive?"
(from a quote by theologian and civil rights leader Howard Thurman)
OUR THEME FOR 2025-2026: Building Beloved Community
In conjunction with St. Gregory's church-wide Beloved Community initiative we will work on how our lives and gifts reflect God's love in the world.
As we have in the past, we will continue to use some Benedictine practices to bring more balance, proportion and harmony into our lives.

SCENES FROM THE UPPER ROOM...
On Sunday, Sept 28 we started off with our usual prayer and meditation time and then contemplated Jesus' parable of the rich man and Lazarus at his gate. We talked about what it means to embody compassion rather than entitlement. We wondered about our own lives -- who might be at our "gates" and how Jesus might be calling us to serve them.
After this abbreviated session of pondering and conversation, we moved to some fun and games, a little pick-me-up time for laughter, fellowship and team-building. We broke into teams of four and circulated among six different centers: corn hole, putting green, pool table, axe throw, dart board and Bible trivia. It was wild and wooly and loads of fun! The winning team members each got Starbucks gift cards and everyone got a take home bag to fill with a variety of candy and snacks. The consensus on the favorite center -- axe throwing for sure!!

MEALS WITH MEANING
SERVE DAY -- AWESOME!
We had an amazing day of service and fellowship on Sunday, Oct 5 as we served great meals and handed out some self-care items to our Meals with Meaning guests. Ten teens and three young adults were part of our serving team and did an amazing job. Many thanks to all our volunteers, to Gena & Rose Vallee (our awesome coordinators), our guests, and to the whole Meals with Meaning team for helping to make our experience so enriching.
| | |
Our closing prayer for this Sunday:
Our closing prayer for this Sunday:
Jesus, our teacher and companion:
We thank you for all the riches you provide for us each day.
We thank you for good food and clean water,
safe and comfortable homes, the possessions we enjoy,
all those who serve us, and especially the love and care of family and friends.
Knowing that we are so richly blessed, we ask you to open our eyes
to see where our gates are and to pay attention to those who are waiting there.
Help us to share the gifts you have given us,
the things that make our lives truly rich.
Amen.

BOCA RATON INTERFAITH
YOUTH ASSOCIATION (BRIYA)
Kicking Off Another Great Year!!
On Monday, Oct 6th from 5pm-7pm, BRIYA had its opening event at the Sukkot Festival hosted by our dear friends at B'nai Torah Congregation in Boca. We started off with some fun -- a hay ride, making "lulav shakes", and dip your own apple cider doughnuts (YUM!).
Gena Vallee, Cathy Berkowitz and Kara Hitner (BRIYA coordinators) facilitated some conversation around the meaning of Sukkot as well as around what the group would like to do for the upcoming year. This was followed by a delicious pasta meal with an extra special treat: B'nai Torah's cantor Magda Fishman and Rabbi Evan Sussman stopped by to say hello and then Magda led us in a beautiful sung prayer. Wow!
And there was more! We then headed outside to see and be present in the sukkah for prayers and conversation. Everyone had an opportunity to shake the lulav! We finished with a quick tour of B'nai Torah's magnificent sanctuary. An amazing time of fellowship, fun and learning! Many, many thanks to Gena, Cathy, Kara and the B'nai Torah team for such great hospitality!
| | |
WANT TO KNOW SOME MORE? (Of course you do!) Here are some things we learned:
WHAT IS SUKKOT?
A Jewish holiday celebrating the harvest and commemorating the Israelites' forty-year wandering in the desert after leaving Egypt. It follows Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
| | |
WHAT IS A SUKKAH?
A temporary, hut-like structure built for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, commemorating the Israelites' temporary shelters during their 40-year wandering in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt.
| | |
WHAT IS A LULAV?
A bundle consisting of a palm branch, three myrtle branches, and two willow branches, held together and waved during the Jewish festival of Sukkot. Along with a citron (etrog), these four items are known as the "four species" (arba minim) and are central to Sukkot rituals, symbolizing the unity of the Jewish people and a connection to God through the harvest.
| | |
The sung prayer that Magda led us in --
also found on the wall in the sukkah!
| | |
WHAT IS BRIYA ALL ABOUT?
BRIYA is an intentional interfaith community for teens (grades 6-12) to explore common life and to build relationships in the context of various faith traditions. Gatherings take place at various locations depending on the program and activities include faith-centered conversations, visits to various houses of worship, participation in community events, and field trips to significant sites -- and, of course, lots of fun and fellowship!
Our BRIYA coordinators are Gena Vallee from St. Gregory's and Cathy Berkowitz from B'nai Torah Congregation. Contact them any time with questions.
