MAKING A DIFFERENCE
A NEW ORLEANS JAZZ CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION
Wow! What a time we had on Saturday! I believe this year’s annual fundraising event was the best ever! Many people contributed so much of their time, talents, and efforts into making the evening truly spectacular in every way! Our committee chairperson, Bill Lintz, did an incredible job pulling everyone and everything together and his co-chairperson, Leanda Robinson, was amazing as she oversaw so many aspects of the entire event. Carole Boucard and Mary Herin outdid themselves with organizing the silent auction which brought in a record amount this year! And, of course, Chef Rose Vallee and Gena Vallee and their entire family were absolutely off the charts with their delicious food. And Anita Sherman and Laura Leonard decorated Harris Hall so beautifully and elegantly! Let’s not forget our own in-house auctioneer, Fr. Andrew Sherman, whose auctioneering skills once again set records in proceeds for the live auction items.
Wycliffe Gordon was beyond amazing as he performed one of the best concerts we’ve ever had here at St. Gregory’s since I’ve been here! His guests, La Lucha, and Charlotte Vaughn, were outstanding, and I was blown away at their artistry and talents.
We always talk about how St. Gregory’s makes a difference and how this annual concert/dinner makes such an important difference in the lives of those in our community. However, I want to share a story which really brings this thought home in a profound and tangible way. A lady from Ft. Lauderdale had attended one of the “Candlelight Concerts” recently and saw the flier about Wycliffe and our “New Orleans Jazz Christmas” in the pew and decided to go online and purchase a ticket. Not being familiar with St. Gregory’s, she decided to only purchase the concert ticket. At the reception afterwards that evening, she met my sister, April, on a whim, as April came up to her and commented on her lovely blue outfit which seemed to match Wycliffe’s shoes! I walked up and introduced myself and found out that she had not purchased a dinner ticket and regretted that decision. I told her it would not be a problem if she wanted to stay (I gave her my seat at Wycliffe’s table.) She was so impressed with St. Gregory’s hospitality, ministries, and people, that she ended up donating a sizable amount that evening! And she attended the 10 AM service on Sunday morning! Stories like this are what “making a difference” really means! St. Gregory’s made a difference in her life and she, in turn, has made a difference in the life of St. Gregory’s.
Happy Advent and Merry Christmas to all!
Tim

HOPE GROWS HERE
STEWARDSHIP UPDATE
Hope Grows Here is more than this year’s Stewardship theme. It is a reflection of the vibrant, faithful life of St. Gregory’s. You can see it in our worship, in the ministries that serve our community, and in the spirit of generosity that binds us together.
Thanks to your support, we are halfway to our 2026 Stewardship goal and are deeply grateful for every pledge that has brought us to this important milestone.
As we look toward the year ahead, we also recognize the financial realities facing our parish. This year's Stewardship goal is $1,250,000, about a 10% rise over last year. This increase is necessary to sustain and strengthen our ministries in the face of rising costs. Higher insurance premiums and our Diocesan assessment alone will add approximately $25,000 to next year’s expenses. As we prepare our 2026 budget, we anticipate total operating costs rising by 5–7% (about $90,000), while one of our revenue sources is expected to decline by around $50,000.
Even with these challenges, hope continues to grow here because of you. Through faithful giving and parish-wide participation, we can meet our goal and ensure that St. Gregory’s remains a place of spiritual strength, compassion, and welcome for all.
Together, we can continue to grow hope and faith at St. Gregory’s.

| | GAUDETE SUNDAY - ADVENT 3 | | |
THIS SUNDAY IS GAUDETE SUNDAY
This Sunday we will celebrate Gaudete Sunday when the clergy don their beautiful rose-pink vestments, and we light the rose-pink candle of the Advent Wreath. Advent was originally observed as a 40 day fast in preparation for Christmas, beginning after the Feast of Saint Martin when it was often referred to as St. Martin’s Lent as early as the fifth century. In the ninth century, the season of Advent was reduced to four weeks, beginning four Sundays before Christmas, and the season retained characteristics of a penitential season. Gaudete Sunday is akin to Laetare Sunday in Lent and serves as a midway break from some of the penitential elements of the liturgy and is a signal of the nearness of the Lord’s coming.

33 MINUTES ON EMPATHY
WILL MEET IN THE PARISH LIBRARY
SUNDAYS FROM 9:12 AM - 9:45 AM
St. Gregory’s has brought back our popular “33 Minutes” program on Sunday mornings. Join us in the parish Library from 9:12 to 9:45 AM (between the 8 AM and 10 AM services of Holy Eucharist) for thirty-three minutes of discussion, teaching, and discovery.
We are reading the book, Don't Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart: How to Relate to Those Who Are Suffering, by Kenneth Haugk. The title is based on Proverbs 25: 20, which says that trying to offer cheer in misguided ways to someone who is suffering can actually increase their pain, discomfort, and feelings of isolation. As Christians, we often want to reach out to help those who are hurting—but the words or actions we use may unintentionally add to their burden instead of easing their pain. Forged from author Kenneth C. Haugk’s own experiences of suffering, the book draws on extensive research on empathy and compassion, offering key insights and suggestions of what to say and do—and what not to say or do—when people are hurting.
With its biblical foundation, compassionate approach, and concrete, practical ideas that you can use in your own life, our study of Don’t Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart will help us to bring God’s loving presence to hurting people when they need it most. A limited number of copies are available for purchase in the parish office for $15, and the book is also available for purchase here: https://www.stephenministries.org/On_Line_Store/viewitem.cfm?ItemID=467
“33 Minutes" will run through mid-December. One minute for each year of Christ’s life = 33 minutes to change your own. This program is co-sponsored by both the Center for Spiritual Formation and the Stephen Ministry program of Christ-centered caregiving at St. Gregory's.

A MESSAGE FROM TIM
This Sunday is Gaudete Sunday, REJOICE SUNDAY, when the clergy don their beautiful rose-pink vestments, and we light the rose-pink candle of the Advent Wreath. Advent was originally observed as a 40-day fast in preparation for Christmas, beginning after the Feast of Saint Martin when it was often referred to as St. For the Communion Proper, the choir will be singing the “Gaudete” meaning “Rejoice”, which is normally the introit for this day.
The Canticle for Sunday is the Magnificat, Song of Mary, which will be sung by the Choir of St. Gregory’s. The setting will be by George Dyson with Anja Yargici as soloist.
Did you know that the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis are sung at EVERY Choral Evensong as they formulate part of Evening Prayer? At every Choral Evensong or Evening Prayer, we celebrate Mary and Christ’s presentation in the temple. This Sunday, we rejoice along with Mary: “My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.”
We will also hear the choir sing the majestic anthem “O Thou the Central Orb” by Charles Wood. O thou, the central orb of righteous love, pure beam of the most high, eternal light of this our wintry world, thy radiance bright awakes new joy in faith, hope soars above...
I hope everyone will join us next Sunday, December 21, for A ST. GREGORY’S CHRISTMAS! You find a more beautiful concert of music and readings anywhere in South Florida! If you’re looking for that special concert offering, this is it! I hope you’ll tell your friends and neighbors! Make this Christmas a St. Gregory’s Christmas!
I’ll see you Sunday!

Each Sunday, as we walk into the church, we are greeted by the beauty of our surroundings. In addition to our newly remodeled space, we now have stunning frontals for each church season, enhancing our worship environment. The flowers at the altar further enrich our worship experience. Sponsoring altar flowers on any given Sunday is a meaningful way to honor a loved one on their birthday, celebrate an anniversary, or pay tribute to someone special. The cost to sponsor flowers is $300. The flowers serve as a beautiful and lasting expression of love and remembrance.

Confirmation Class: LIFE IN CHRIST (Grades 6, 7, 8 and others)
Confirmation Class meets every Sunday at 9:10am
in the Conference Room (unless otherwise noted).
Our journey to Confirmation for young people is a three-year program. Our program seeks to nurture the faith of our young people as they prepare for their high school years and beyond, giving them a solid foundation for a Christ-centered life. The Confirmation Class experience may also include retreats, service opportunities and other activities. All young people in grades 6, 7 and 8 can participate in and benefit from this class, regardless of whether or not they choose to be confirmed. Older teens, those transferring from other churches, or any others who are interested are most welcome to participate as well.
During Confirmation we explore:
-- The Bible and the stories that shape our life and faith
-- A life of prayer and worship led by and replenished by the Holy Spirit
-- A life of ministry and service as disciples of Jesus
-- The Anglican/Episcopal tradition in all its breadth and depth

WHAT DO WE DO DURING UPPER ROOM TIME?
Following our pattern of Pause, Listen, Reflect, Pray and Go,
we will build on our previous themes of
What will you do with your one wild and precious life?
(based on Mary Oliver's poem The Summer Day) and
"What makes you come alive?"
(from a quote by theologian and civil rights leader Howard Thurman)
OUR THEME FOR 2025-2026: Building Beloved Community
In conjunction with St. Gregory's church-wide Beloved Community initiative we will work on how our lives and gifts reflect God's love in the world.
As we have in the past, we will continue to use some Benedictine practices to bring more balance, proportion and harmony into our lives.

Christmas Break! No Upper Room Time
SCENES FROM THE UPPER ROOM...
On Sunday, Nov 30, we celebrated the beginning of the Advent season and lit the first candle of Hope. We talked about what it means to live in hope and be bearers of hope. Our Gospel lesson from Matthew featured Jesus' admonition to us to be prepared for His coming, and so we pondered why and how we prepare our hearts to receive Him. The analogy we used was getting ready for a special guest at our home.
We also had two fun activities -- adding our handprints to the Youth Group tie-dyed fabric hanging and starting on the photo collage on the wall at the Youth Room entryway. It was fun to see all the handprints that have been added over the years and to go through the photos of our more recent activities! The photo collage features our stewardship theme for this year (Hope Grows Here) -- very fitting for Hope Sunday! Lots more photos will be added in the coming Sundays -- stay tuned!

KITCHEN SAFETY ALERT!
Keeping Our Children Safe
At St. Gregory's we continually work to keep our children as safe as possible when they are at church. With that in mind we are requesting that children not be in our kitchen for safety reasons.
There are a number of potentially hazardous items that can present challenges -- sharp knives and other kitchen tools, burners and ovens, electrical appliances and outlets, hot pots and pans of food, etc. The kitchen is also often a hive of activity with many volunteers working on food prep or clean up in close quarters and thus is not an ideal place for children.
We ask that you respect this request and instruct your children not to be present in the kitchen. Thank you in advance for your understanding as we all work together to keep our beloved children safe. Grace for all!

GODLY PLAY NEWS – ADVENT SEASON
Everything has changed. It is now the time of the color purple…
That is the beginning of the Advent Season and the start of the new Church year.
The new Church year started on November 30th.
During these four Sundays of Advent, we are getting ready for this King who was coming is still coming. We are all on this journey along with the Prophets, Mother Mary and Father Joseph, Shepherds and Angels and the Magi…
The four Sundays are Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love, symbolized by the lighting of candles on an Advent wreath, with each Sunday representing the growing light of Christ culminating on Christmas Day with the arrival of Jesus.
Our Godly Play classroom has become an Advent Craft Workshop now for this season: children can work on wreath making, writing holiday cards, making ornaments, and other craft ideas.
As you can see from the pictures, we all have a lot of fun (including the grown-ups), maybe too much fun… however, there is not such a thing as too much fun.
We started our Godly Play season with Laura Alary’s book “Look!: A Child’s Guide to Advent and Christmas”; we read different passages of the book: a time to look back, a time to look around and a time to look ahead… along with the prophet Isaiah’s verses:
The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned.

Our closing prayer for this Sunday:
Jesus, You are my strength when I have none,
and you are my shield when I feel attacked.
Help me to keep on remembering all the reasons I have to be grateful.
Use my gratitude to bless others today,
Lord, let them see thankfulness in my attitude.
Let them hear it in my words.
And let them feel it in the way I treat them.
Even when I struggle, I thank you for the lessons
and the growth that comes from them.
Lord, help me to be grateful.
Amen.
