SSA Update: Changes to How Medical Disability

Reviews Are Processed

SSA has announced that it will begin transitioning the processing of medical Continuing Disability Reviews (CDRs) from State Disability Determination Services (DDS) to its federal processing unit, known as Disability Case Review (DCR).

Medical CDRs are a routine part of SSA’s disability programs and are used to determine whether individuals receiving disability benefits remain medically eligible. According to SSA, moving this work to a federal processing site is intended to strengthen program oversight and accountability, improve service and program management, and reduce improper payments.

SSA also notes that this change will allow state DDS offices to focus more fully on initial disability claims and reconsideration cases, which may help reduce wait times for people newly applying for disability benefits.

The SSA reports that its Disability Case Review organization has shown strong results since federal processing sites were consolidated under DCR in Fiscal Year 2025, with production increasing by more than 20 percent compared to the prior year. As part of this transition, SSA plans to hire additional staff with experience in medical CDR processing to expand capacity.

Importantly, SSA has emphasized that this operational change does not affect eligibility rules for disability benefits. The criteria for receiving benefits remain the same. The stated goal is to improve how the program is administered and enhance service to the public.

This information is being shared for awareness purposes. If you have questions about how this may affect your specific situation, SSA recommends contacting Social Security directly or visiting their official website for the most up‑to‑date guidance.
