Royalties for Spirituals

Special Offering

Sunday, November 1st

The historical term, “Negro Spiritual,” refers to the enormous collection of songs created by enslaved black people. We regularly sing these songs as hymns and anthems in worship. As part of our new social justice initiative, we are taking up special offerings to pay royalties for the use of Negro Spirituals twice a year for the next two years. The regular offering in worship on Sunday, November 1 will support DuPage County ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics), a nation-wide program sponsored by the NAACP, that encourages high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students. Consider getting involved as a volunteer or judge for the ACT-SO program on Sat, March 20, or join our new Racial Justice Ministry. To make a contribution through Tithely, please select "Royalties for Spirituals" in the drop-down menu. For more information, click here or contact Rev. Kyle Roggenbuck.

Advent Sermon Series

The Dawn Chorus

Nov. 29 - Dec. 24

Like notes on a music staff, we are called to join together to sing songs that proclaim the renewed creation of Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. This year throughout the Advent and Christmas season, we will encounter familiar and new Carols for the Coming Christ and pause to consider their messages in fresh ways. As a popular quote attributed to Hans Christian Anderson says, “Where words fail, music speaks.” Song poets have long helped us “speak” when our own words fail in the face of our human struggle. The promise of the Coming Christ is that our hearts can hold the world and that the songs in our hearts can heal our weariness.

Fleming Family Book Review

"Something from Nothing"

 by Phoebe Gilman

Based on a traditional Jewish folktale, Something from Nothing tells the story of Joseph and his grandfather- a skilled tailor who sewed Joseph a blanket when he was a baby. As Joseph gets older, the blanket becomes torn and worn. His mother encourages him to throw it away but Joseph knows “Grandpa can fix it!” So his grandpa turns the blanket into a warm jacket. Of course, over the years his jacket becomes tattered and once again his grandpa uses what’s left to create something new. Over and over again this repeats until what is left is a tiny button. Even once the button is gone, Joseph uses the memory to create something new. My 5 year old’s favorite part was the small illustrations at the bottom of each page, showing a small mouse family using the bits of fabric left behind to create their own tiny clothes. Because… you can always make Something from Nothing.

This book can be found in the General Collection (red) section of our church’s library.
