Heifer Market, Sun., October 28, after 10:30 Worship

Heifer Market will fill our Atrium and Main Lobby with calls of "Pigs!" and "Bees!" by our little ones, who are raising funds for Heifer International, an organization we have supported for years.  Their mission is to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth.  Each year, with our help, we "teach a man to fish"  and empower families to turn hunger and poverty into hope and prosperity.  Attend.  Help.  Love.

Welcome

The horror movie that transformed the genre by locating the monster inside ourselves. Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 masterpiece blends a brutal manipulation of audience identification and an incredibly dense, allusive visual style to create the most morally unsettling film ever made.

Harry Potter and the Sacred Text
Wednesdays Now Thru Nov. 14th

We invite you to read selected chapters from Book 1:  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (or Philosopher's Stone if you are British) through the eyes of a theme.  We will recap the chapter, look at our insights, and discuss a story from the Bible that also address this theme-thinking about how the messages of faith speak in many ways- and also the wealth and wisdom from our own Sacred Text.  We invite all lovers of Scripture and Harry Potter, whether you are young or young-at-heart, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, or Gryffindor-all are welcome for this six week program!

Capital Campaign Project Update

Window Restoration
TLC for Our Historic Structure

The Window Restoration Project, the first of our new capital building fund efforts, is complete! Craftsmen from Daprato Rigali, a firm with experience back to 1860, performed the work. They carefully repaired, re-cemented, cleaned, patched and painted every stained glass window and almost every other older window in the building. Some large sections were removed completely and rebuilt in the Daprato Studios. We love the light, and we won't miss the leaks.  The windows in the Youth Room were restored on the outside. Inside, they are covered with paint from too many bad paint jobs. Join us for the Fall Workday on October 14 and help us bring them back to life.  See more here!
Next up...the Chapel Roof Replacement...underway now!

Ushers and Greeters Needed

Can you spare one Sunday a month?  Would you like to be the smiling face welcoming friends and visitors to morning service?  We are in need of additional ushers and greeters at our 9:00 am and 10:30 am services.  This is a great and easy way to get to know more members of the Congregation and to be part of a critical service.  This is not a big time commitment because ushers and greeters both volunteer for just one service a month.  If you can volunteer to be an usher or greeter, contact Tom Pulver (312-816-0863).
Neighbors in Need

(NIN) is a special mission offering of the United Church of Christ that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry (CAIM). Two-thirds of this offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries (JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants. This year, special consideration will be given to projects focusing on serving our immigrant neighbors and communities.

Visual Arts Ministry (VAM) Artists in Residence Gallery Update

Please join us in thanking Susan Thurber Jones for sharing her wonderful art with us these past several weeks. As we say goodbye to Susan's work, we are delighted to welcome a new exhibit, this one by church community member and artist, Haruo Kurokawa. An oil painter since early retirement from an industrial design career in 2003, his favorite subjects to paint are landscapes and scenes from nature. Be sure to introduce yourself to Haruo, if you don't already know him, and stop by the gallery to see his wonderful work.

Also,  in the Sanctuary, you'll see four new banners; photos of prints by Sadao Watanabe, Japan's foremost Christian artist. Each banner beautifully illustrates a different Bible Story.  Click here to read more .
