This photo captures the entrance to the beautiful Labyrinth at Camp Vida Joven in Nicaragua.
A labyrinth was an ancient tool used to facilitate prayer and meditation. Today, people also use them for reflection, mindfulness, spiritual or religious enrichment, renewal, stress reduction, or even just for fun. While visiting camp, we always consider it a highlight of our trip.
Often, the camp leaders make it possible for us to visit the labyrinth at night under the stars, with small fires burning throughout. Talk about spiritual renewal! I’m tearing up just thinking about it.
One thing the Nicaraguans notice about Americans is how much we work—relentlessly—without taking breaks, pushing ourselves to complete our projects within our limited time at camp.
“So, you’re one of those who come to us and work, work, work until you’re so tired and worn out—and soon you will leave that way, exhausted.”
“The ones who return have learned to sit with us on our porches in the evening, come to our fiestas, walk the labyrinth, enjoy our fellowship at mealtime, reflect on the Bible with us, and remember us when they return home.”
So often, we treat what is most life-giving as the least consequential, somehow less deserving than our ‘real’ work.
The image above is, in fact, not a photo but a beautiful painting—a gift to me, hand-painted by Peggy Hayes, a dedicated team member on several trips to Nicaragua. Peggy and her husband, Joe, joined last August’s trip with members of Bayside Presbyterian. They were former members of GB Presbyterian and remain vital leaders in the team. They will participate again this summer.

Preschool Sunday Worship Service
Next Sunday is a very special Preschool Sunday! We will have many visitors!
There will be a pancake breakfast for everyone at 9:00 AM and one worship service at 10:00 AM.
It will be a wonderful and unique service! We are inviting all of our children to remain in worship with their parents. To make the experience fun and engaging for them, we are creating a PRAYERGROUND, similar to the one pictured above. Parents are encouraged to sit with their children in the Prayerground. The service will be interactive for everyone.
The nursery will be open for children ages two and under.
Please do what you do so well and help make all of our preschool families feel welcome!

DEACON MINISTRY Deacons are responsible for providing pastoral care and support to the members of the church. This may involve visiting the sick, elderly, or homebound members, offering prayers, providing comfort, and meeting practical needs within the congregation. All members and non-members of the congregation, not in small group, should have a deacon assigned. If you don't have a deacon, have not been contacted by a deacon, and are not in a small group, please reach out to Dave Randall, at darandall24@gmail.com and he will assign you a deacon. | |
