Dear Family Camp Families and Day visitors,
Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Family Camp due to the forecasted poor air quality resulting from the wildfires.
This includes the cancellation of the Sunday service and potluck at Camp White.
This decision was made carefully, considering both the objective forecasted air-quality measures as well as input shared by campers. We looked at multiple forecast models, and while most show some improvement in AQI today/Thurs, models predict it getting worse Fri/Sat – into the Unhealthy/150+ range. We also talked with a few of the folks signed up to camp overnight, and most leaned neutral to uncomfortable if the AQI was above moderate/100.
While we had hoped conditions might improve, we believe the safest and most responsible choice is to cancel rather than put our families at unnecessary risk.
We know many of you were looking forward to spending this time together, and we are disappointed that we won’t be able to gather as planned. We appreciate everyone who shared their perspective and helped us make this decision.
Thank you for your understanding, and please stay safe. We hope to have an opportunity to gather again soon under better conditions.

Gerrit Van Zwol
Coordinator of Children and Youth
We’re excited to announce that, effective immediately, Gerrit is stepping into the full-time position of Coordinator of Children and Youth! He will maintain his responsibilities in children’s ministry, while taking on the role of leading our youth programs. We’re looking forward to how God will continue to minister to our young people through him!

Guatemala Mission Trip
Our team leaves tomorrow, Friday, August 7th and will return on the 16th. On Sunday, they will be worshipping with the congregation in Coban, at Iglesia Antioca.
Next week, the team will continue to build our relationship with Escuela la Libertad that we have worked with on the Libros Abiertos project for seven years. The team will also visit the second school we now co-sponsor with Opportunity Presbyterian Church. This is Escuela Salvador De Oliva, an all-male student body that meets in the afternoon and shares a campus with another school that meets in the morning. Please keep the team in your prayers as they build new relationships and renew existing ones.

Ways to Help Those Affected by Spokane Area Fires
It was a difficult decision to cancel National Night Out, but we want everyone to know that the food we purchased was used to feed unhoused youth and young adults through our ministry partner Cup of Cool Water, as well as feeding first responders and evacuees through the Salvation Army food bank. Both agencies were grateful for our donations, which totaled 600 meals!
Another way to help those in our area is by donating to the Presbytery of the Inland Northwest, who will direct funds to those who need assistance.

• Enter the amount you wish to give and choose the method you would like to use (PayPal, venmo, or debit/credit).

Volunteers Needed for St. Ann’s Lunch on August 16
For over 40 years, St. Ann's Catholic Church in the East Central neighborhood has provided a weekly lunch for people in need. Hamblen has partnered with Spokane Valley United Methodist to provide lunch every seven weeks at 1pm. What Hamblen needs is two volunteers from 10:40-2pm on August 16 to cook/serve/cleanup at 2120 E. First Ave. We also provide six dozen desserts (cookies, cupcakes, brownies, etc.), so we'd like 3 volunteers to deliver 2 dozen treats each. Call Dia with questions: 509-389-9858. Cup of Cool Water is a Christ-centered ministry serving young adults experiencing homelessness in Spokane. Through caring relationships, practical support, and the hope of Jesus, we help young people move from crisis toward stability, healing, and a brighter future.
There are currently about twenty Hamblen families who regularly provide a total of over two dozen sack lunches once a month to support young adults through this ministry. If you would like more information or are interested in joining us, please call Marc & Debbie Connally at (509) 939-9499.
