What's Happening at Hamblen Frustration

Our goal in sending What's Happening at Hamblen to your inbox is to provide a convenient way for you to receive Hamblen news. There has been some frustration with the way the weekly e-news requires recipients to click on "View Entire Message" to see the entirety of What's Happening at Hamblen, which then opens the full document in a new window, starting at the top again. Unfortunately, we at HPPC have no control over which section within the document displays in the new window. If you are interested in reading an explanation for the reason this occurs and some ways around the issue, click HERE. It is not our intention to cause any frustration, and if we could eliminate this particular source of frustration, we certainly would. Thank you for your understanding.

WOULD YOU LIKE PASTORAL CARE OR A VISIT?
Throughout Covid, pastors and members of the congregational care team have continued our ministry of visiting and offering care. However, care and visits are now complicated. Institutional rules and safety precautions can even prevent visitations. If you would like a visit or call, please reach out any time. We are proactive in visiting people, but we also need to hear from anyone who would like a connection so that we don’t miss anyone in need. The pastors can be reached by email, cell phone, or through the church office. Hamblen is a church family. May the Lord continue to connect us with one another in safe ways even during the pandemic.
THIS WEEK'S NEWS
Help Us Invite Our Neighbors to National Night Out
TOMORROW, Friday, July 22, from 9:30-11:00 AM

Wear your walking shoes and help us hang door signs throughout the neighborhood. Meet at the church at 9:30 and grab a stack of fliers and a map. We are canvassing the area between Cook and Pittsburg, and 37th to 44th. The more people we have, the faster this will go! We hope you are able to make time to join us!
National Night Out is Only 12 Days from Now!

Thank you to everyone who has brought in donations for our National Night Out block party. Your generosity is very much appreciated! We are expecting an estimated 500 neighbors to join us on August 2, and we still need more chips and drinks for everyone. Donations of single-serve beverages and chips would be greatly appreciated. Leave donations on or under the NNO table in the church entry. Thank you!
Block Party Yard Signs

If you live in the Hamblen neighborhood and would like to display a yard sign for the National Night Out neighborhood block party that HPPC will be hosting this summer on August 2, you can pick up a sign in the church office.
A Note from Joe Bruce

THANK YOU!!!! Hamblen has been a church home to Kathy and me for 32 years. This past Sunday showed why that has been the case. The love you extended during and after worship as we reflected on my years as your Director of Children’s Ministries at HPPC brought tears. Your hugs meant so much. Thank you for all the wonderful cards. Thank you so much to the entire HPPC congregation for the KOA and gas gift cards. Kathy and I are already looking at ways we can put them to use. I look forward to worshiping with you in the future.

See you soon.
Joe
A Note from Penny Lucas

Dear Church Family,

I made it back from Oregon Sunday evening after being away 2 weeks at my sister Ruth's bedside and for her service in St. Helens yesterday. It made me feel so loved and cared about to find my mailbox filled with beautiful, sincere and loving sympathy cards from so many of you. The service was wonderful. There were so many people who'd come to say goodbye the church folks had to put up folding chairs across the back of the church and we ran short of bulletins! Her accordion group played, a friend sang a jazzy acapella solo of Amazing Grace, her grandchildren were acolytes, and the pastor's words were personal and meaningful. This morning there was a definite feeling of healing that filled her house. I feel wrapped in the love of friends and God. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers as my family and I have dealt with the grief of losing my three sisters this year.

Our Church’s National Night Out Block Party
is Right Around the Corner – and YOU are Invited!

National Night Out is a nation-wide event on the first Tuesday of August. People are encouraged to gather with their neighbors and build community. Our church will be hosting again this year on August 2, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.

For almost 400 neighbors, we provide a free hot dog dinner, bounce house & slide, and live music. Local law enforcement and emergency service vehicles come and let kids climb into the trucks and interact with the firefighters and police officers who protect them. Neighbors visit and eat together. It’s a wonderful evening!

So first and foremost, we want you to come and enjoy the evening with this neighborhood. If you are part of our church, you are part of our neighborhood. Wear your church nametag and come ready to visit. Some people make it a goal to walk away from the evening having learned 3 names and having heard 1 story. We don’t proselytize at this event – we simply help people feel welcome.

But you can also volunteer to help. If you would like to help during the event, you can sign up at the information center in the church entry or at bit.ly/HPPC2022NNO. You can also help by providing single-serve beverages and chips, or loaning canopies for the event.

Community is a gift from God. Let’s be a blessing to our neighborhood together by making community possible on August 2! See you then.
Virtual Journey to Guatemala: “The New Face of Mission”
Wednesday, August 24, 2022, 4:30 p.m.

What is the “New Face of Mission” in a world still reeling from colonialism? Join CEDEPCA for the next Virtual Journey to Guatemala where we will talk about what makes for healthy cross-cultural relationships. If you lead mission trips or ever plan to, this Virtual Journey is for you. We will use the new book, Freeing Congregational Mission: A Practical Vision for Companionship, Cultural Humility, and Co-Development, as the focal point in our conversation.

The book’s co-authors Hunter Farrell and Bala Khyllep are professors and directors of the World Mission Initiative at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. We are excited that both authors will be present to guide us on this Virtual Journey. Participants are encouraged to read the book beforehand for a richer experience.

To buy the book, please visit: freeingmission.com. If you buy the book at IVP, use discount code: MISSION for a 30% discount + free shipping in the USA. A purchase of more than 10 books receives a 40% discount (no code needed).

Pre-registration is required HERE. Questions? Contact [email protected] or [email protected]

HOW WE'RE HELPING OTHERS
Shoe Drive

The Mission Community Outreach Center's 12th annual School Shoes for Kids Shoe Drive is July 5 - August 8. New athletic shoes and socks are being collected for children entering grades K-8th (kid's size 12 to adult's size 13). Donations can be left at the church or delivered to MCOC. Learn more HERE.
Help Send a Kid to Camp!

The Deacons Camp Scholarship Fund helps pay for elementary through high school kids to attend Camp Spalding each summer. A week at camp ranges from $260-$525 and HPPC believes so much in the value of the camp experience that we contribute 50% of the cost (we also contribute a portion to Mom & Me camps for younger kids). So far this year, 43 children have received scholarship codes from us. Typically we spend between $8-$10,000 each summer on this important ministry that is funded strictly through donations. If you would like to help send a kid to camp, you can use a yellow Deacon envelope from the pew or write "Camp Scholarship" on the memo line of your check. You can also donate online at hamblenpres.org/give. Thank you for your generosity!
Support People Impacted by the Crisis in Ukraine

We pray for peace. We watch with growing concern as geopolitical tensions and violence rise. We trust God in all things, but our hearts break for those most impacted. We have had a lot of people ask about ways to help those affected by the Ukraine/Russia conflict. If you would like to help, visit presbyterianmission.org/donate/OG999999/.
Moran Vista Ministry Opportunities

We need worship leaders for once-a-month Sunday worship services at Moran Vista. The service begins at 2:00 pm. Worship leadership needs include a musician, a song leader, and someone to provide an inspiring reading or a simple sermon.

If you would like more information or would like to volunteer for these Moran Vista ministries, contact Joe Bruce at his desk, 509-385-0626. You can also email [email protected].
