Upcoming Book Club Meeting

The Book Club meets next on November 17, at 2:00 PM to discuss The Bible’s Plot by Ken Onstot.

Many people feel lost when trying to read the Bible. They may be familiar with Bible stories like Adam and Eve, Noah and the ark, David and Goliath, or Mary and Jesus, but they have no sense of how these stories are connected to a larger plot. The Bible's Plot is an overview of the Bible showing how individual Bible texts (including laws, psalms, prophecies, and letters) fit into a larger plot that, in turn, shapes the meaning of the individual stories. Along the way the book traces ten recurring plot-patterns that thread their way through the entire Bible, revealing patterns of God's work in our lives today.

Join the discussion in person in the Skylight room. For more info, contact Betty Thompson at [email protected].

ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT HPPC

Adult Sunday School

Have you ever wondered how the Bible came together? Have you thought about the ways we interpret scripture as disciples of Jesus? This fall we’ll answer these questions and many more as we explore the Animate: Bible course. In each Animate: Bible session, the group will watch a video featuring a leading voice from the Christian faith, spend time on personal reflection and journaling, and share ideas with the group. Join us in the Skylight Room each Sunday after the 9:00 AM service through October 30.

Top of the Hill--2nd Tuesdays from 11:30-1:00

Top of the Hill is back! This monthly event is geared toward retirement-aged folks who want to socialize over a meal, then learn something new. Topics range from presentations by local non-profits to travelogues to local authors or musical programs. RSVPs for each month are due the Thursday before each event. Suggested donation to cover lunch is $8, cash or check. Here is the lineup for the rest of the year:

  • November 8--Wes Jessup & Betsy Godlewski, Executive Director and Director of Development at the Museum of Arts and Culture, will tell us what is new at the MAC

We’ll also study biblical characters featured in the songs that fill our hearts with the hope and joy of Christmas. Come to the Skylight Room after the 9:00 AM worship service starting November 13.

Away in a Manger? Christmas Beyond the Barn

Wednesdays, December 7, 14, 21, 9:30 AM

When we think about the story of Christmas, we picture animals gathered around the infant Jesus, angels singing, and a star shining over a stable. But the story of Christmas is more than a quiet scene depicted on a Christmas card. For three weeks in Advent, we’ll study stories in the gospels of Matthew and Luke that didn’t happen on a silent night but teach us about the One in the manger. Join us Wednesday mornings at 9:30 in the Skylight Room.
