WORSHIP WITH US

Summer Sermon Series: June 19—September 4

Paul's journey in the New Testament is a wild ride. He starts a massive road trip when his life is dramatically changed by Jesus Christ. This summer, we will ride "shotgun" with Paul and be dramatically changed with him.

Join us for In-Person Worship on Sunday Mornings at 9 AM!

  • Masks optional.
  • Nursery care provided.
  • Communion served in factory-sealed packets the first Sunday of the month.
  • Kids’ Zone for children aged 3-yrs through 1st grade after the Junior Sermon.

First Sunday of the Month

Communion will be observed this Sunday. If you are worshiping with us from home and would like to celebrate communion during our Sunday morning service, please be sure to have a piece of bread or cracker, and something to drink ready when worship begins.

WOULD YOU LIKE PASTORAL CARE OR A VISIT?

Throughout Covid, pastors and members of the congregational care team have continued our ministry of visiting and offering care. However, care and visits are now complicated. Institutional rules and safety precautions can even prevent visitations. If you would like a visit or call, please reach out any time. We are proactive in visiting people, but we also need to hear from anyone who would like a connection so that we don’t miss anyone in need. The pastors can be reached by email, cell phone, or through the church office. Hamblen is a church family. May the Lord continue to connect us with one another in safe ways even during the pandemic.

THIS WEEK'S NEWS

Church Office Closures

The church office will be closed tomorrow and this coming Monday:

  • Friday, September 2
  • Monday, September 5

Regular office hours will resume Tuesday, September 6. Thank you for your understanding.

Blessing of the Backpacks This Sunday

Area schools either have already begun classes or will start classes soon. If you are starting pre-school, heading off to college, or anywhere in between, we invite you to bring your backpack this Sunday, September 4, 9:00 AM and come forward during the Children’s Sermon to receive a blessing. Each student will receive a special tag to put on their backpack to remind them throughout the school year that God is with them. Teachers and school staff are also invited to come forward to receive a blessing. HPPC cares for our students!

Join Us in Thanking Annie Flood This Sunday

Annie Flood, our organist, pianist, and vocalist, is moving from Spokane and leaving her roles with Gonzaga and with us. It's been a joy to serve in ministry with Annie. She has brought wonderful musical gifts and a positive spirit. It's hard to say goodbye, but we look forward to continued friendship with her. Please join us on Sept. 4, when we will thank Annie in our worship service and give her a "card shower." Bring a thank-you card and eat some cake.

Jo Ivester Speaking at HPPC

We welcome best-selling author Jo Ivester for two upcoming speaking engagements. Join us to hear about her two books:

Tuesday, September 13, 11:30-1:00

  • Join us for lunch and hear an informative presentation by Jo Ivester on her memoir, The Outskirts of Hope, her family's experience as one of two white families in a rural Mississippi town during the civil rights movement.
  • Please RSVP by September 8, at heathern@hamblenpres.org.
  • Suggested donation to help cover the cost of lunch is $8.
  • Books are available in the church office for $11.

Wednesday, September 14, 7:00-8:30 PM: Once a Girl, Always a Boy

  • Jo Ivester will discuss her book, Once a Girl, Always a Boy: A Family Memoir of a Transgender Journey.
  • No registration is required, and there is no cost for this look at what it is like to have a transgender son in a world not quite ready for people like him. Books are available in the church office for $17.

Ministry Fair 2022

The Hamblen Ministry Fair will be after the 9 AM worship service on Sunday, September 11. Come learn about ways you can connect with folks in the HPPC community, grow as a disciple of Jesus, and love our neighbors in Spokane and around the world. Grab a cup of coffee and explore the ways God might be calling you to join in the ministry happening in and through HPPC. If you'd like to have a table at our ministry fair, please contact Heather Notske at 509-385-0627 or heathern@hamblenpres.org. We look forward to seeing you there!

Children’s & Family Ministries Volunteer Opportunities

You can sign up at bit.ly/ChildMinistriesHPPC to help with J.A.M. Sunday School, Wednesday evening Journey program, or other volunteer opportunities that impact children. For questions, contact Cindy Dicken, Director of Children's and Family Ministries, at 509-385-0626 or cindyd@hamblenpres.org.

Paid Nursery Help Needed Urgently

We are currently understaffed in the nursery and are attempting to hire but have had no applicants. If you are over 18 and would be willing to work in the nursery one or two Sunday mornings a month or an occasional weekday evening, you would be a great blessing to those depending on the nursery. We want everyone to feel comfortable attending worship services or other events at Hamblen with their families and hope to continue offering childcare services to ensure families feel welcome. If you are able, please help us continue to provide this important service to our congregation and visitors. Thank you!

CAUTION: Watch for Scam Emails!

Please be aware that scammers are regularly targeting churches through email. These emails use similar, but not exact, email addresses as church staff. Never send money through e-gift cards in response to these emails. You can check with staff about any suspicious email by creating a new email and selecting the staff member's email address from your contacts or click on the link for the staff member's email at the bottom of this e-news.

OPPORTUNITIES TO GET INVOLVED

Opportunities to Serve at HPPC & in the Community

Visit our website at hamblenpres.org/getinvolved to check out a list of ways to get involved at HPPC and grow as a disciple of Jesus. You will find 10 different categories along with a few examples of things that fit in each category. In front of each category is a checkbox. If you think you would like to try out a new ministry, print the list, check the box(es) of the categories that interest you, return it to the office, and we will contact you when we have a need for volunteers. Thank you for serving with us!

Come Sing with the Choir!

The Chancel Choir has had a restful summer break and is now recruiting new members for the fall! We have members of all music-reading ability levels, so if you love singing, you'll fit right in! Even if you can’t commit to the entire program year, come sing with us on weeks that you are able.

Rehearsals are on Thursdays, 7:00-8:30 pm in the sanctuary, and we gather at 8:30 on Sunday mornings (a half hour prior to worship). Contact Kyla Fague at kylaf@hamblenpres.org or 509-270-6848 for more information or if you are interested in joining this great community. We begin rehearsing on Thursday, September 8. The choir’s first Sunday in worship will be September 18. We hope to see you in the choir loft!

Call for Greeters

Anyone who would like to assist in greeting and passing out bulletins on Sunday mornings is encouraged to sign up as a greeter at hamblenpres.org/signup or on the sign-up sheet located at the information center. A greeter does not have to unlock doors or be in charge, but may help with the offering and tidying the pews after worship. A Head Usher will be available to assist and answer questions. Anyone can be a welcoming greeter!

Support People Impacted by the Crisis in Ukraine

We pray for peace. We watch with growing concern as geopolitical tensions and violence rise. We trust God in all things, but our hearts break for those most impacted. We have had a lot of people ask about ways to help those affected by the Ukraine/Russia conflict. If you would like to help, visit presbyterianmission.org/donate/OG999999/.
