Annual Congregational Meeting THIS SUNDAY!

The annual congregational meeting will be held on February 27 (instead of the 13th), following the worship service. We will approve the Pastor’s terms of call, elect additional officers and members of special committees, and receive ministry reports. We'll also celebrate Pastor Jennie's new role with us. THERE WILL BE CAKE!

A copy of the 2021 Annual Report is available to view HERE.

If you are unable to attend in person and would still like to be part of the meeting, you can Zoom in using this link after the worship service.
Looking for Help On Sunday Mornings

Volunteers are needed for several ministries. One urgent need is for ushers on Sunday mornings. See all of the ways to serve and sign up at hamblenpres.org/signup.

LENTEN DATES AND TIMES
Celebrate Ash Wednesday With Us--Next Week!

Ash Wednesday signals the beginning of the 40-day season of Lent. It helps focus our hearts as Christians on repentance and prayer and prepares us for an intentional season of reflection on Christ’s life, ministry, sacrifice, and resurrection. This year you have two options on Ash Wednesday, March 2:

  • Drive-through ash imposition at the front door of the church between noon and 1:00
  • Worship service at 7:00 pm. The service will include music from the Taizé community, which is an ecumenical Christian monastic fraternity in Taizé, France. The music is very simple and repetitive, leaving room for prayer, repentance, and reflection.

We hope you will join us for one (or both!) of these events!
4-Week Lenten Small Groups

This Lenten season we are holding at least two different four-week small groups (and one after Lent). These are a time to experience a group with a short time commitment. During this time we will get to know each other, discuss the weekly Scripture readings from the "On the Mark" sermon series, and share how we see God working in our lives. These groups are open to people in all stages of life, and all stages of faith. These are places to ask honest questions and be authentic.

Group #1--Monday evenings, March 7-28, from 6:00-7:30 PM in Room 4.
Group #2--Friday mornings, March 11-April 1, from 9:30-11:00 AM in the Skylight Room.
Group #3--Thursday evenings, April 14-May 5, from 6:30-8:00 PM in Room 4.

All of these groups will be facilitated by Heather Notske. If you are interested in participating in one of these (or would like to lead a group!), contact Heather at 509-385-0627 or heathern@hamblenpres.org.
Searching for Sunday Book Discussion Group

This 7-week book group will meet following worship on Sunday mornings in the Skylight Room beginning March 13. We will discuss Searching for Sunday by Rachel Held Evans, a popular blogger, award-winning writer, and captivating speaker until her tragic death in 2019. In this book, Evans chronicles her complicated relationship with the church, and how she ultimately found her way back to a community of faith. Using stories around sacraments such as baptism and confession, Evans encourages readers to explore their own relationship to the faith communities that shaped them. Evans’ candor, humor, and wisdom inspire readers to explore their faith with depth and authenticity. Through Evans’ book readers discover anew the transforming power of a faith that is not afraid to wonder, question, or start over. Books available for $15 in the church office. Discussion will be led by Pastor Jennie.
Holy Week Dates and Times

  • Palm Sunday worship--April 10 at 9 AM
  • Good Friday service--April 15 at 7 PM.
  • Easter worship services--April 17 at 9 and 10:30 AM.

WOULD YOU LIKE PASTORAL CARE OR A VISIT?
Throughout Covid, pastors and members of the congregational care team have continued our ministry of visiting and offering care. However, care and visits are now complicated. Institutional rules and safety precautions can even prevent visitations. If you would like a visit or call, please reach out any time. We are proactive in visiting people, but we also need to hear from anyone who would like a connection so that we don’t miss anyone in need. The pastors can be reached by email, cell phone, or through the church office. Hamblen is a church family. May the Lord continue to connect us with one another in safe ways even during the pandemic.

HOW WE'RE HELPING OTHERS
Pray for the Ukraine

We pray for peace. We watch with growing concern as geopolitical tensions and violence rise. We trust God in all things, but our hearts break for those most impacted. The following links from the Presbyterian Church may equip our prayers:

Mardi-what?

There are more than 1,800 homeless women living in Spokane each day. Meeting their basic needs can be a struggle for agencies serving this population. Spokane Mardi Bras aims to change that. Please help the Mission and Service Committee collect items to share with several of our partner agencies during the month of February. You can share donations that would help promote dignity to a woman struggling with homelessness. The collection barrel will be in the narthex – bring what you can to the church. Call 509-389-9858 for no-contact collection from your front door. Thank you for being the hands and feet of Christ and bringing dignity to His children.

Most needed items: Underwear, deodorant, bras, bus passes, reading glasses, socks, razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and feminine hygiene products.
Building Christ's Community

World Relief expects that 200 refugees from Afghanistan will be coming to Spokane. They have a need for Welcome Kits to prepare homes for families fleeing violence and danger. Use this link, bit.ly/WorldReliefWelcomeKits to review the kits: kitchen, linen, cleaning, elementary, or middle and high school kits, how to assemble and deliver a kit.

Thank you for building God's kingdom in Spokane!
Moran Vista Ministry Opportunities

We need worship leaders for once-a-month Sunday worship services at Moran Vista. The service begins at 2:00 pm. Worship leadership needs include a musician, a song leader, and someone to provide an inspiring reading or a simple sermon.

If you would like more information or would like to volunteer for these Moran Vista ministries, contact Joe Bruce at his desk, 509-385-0626. You can also email joeb@hamblenpres.org.
Bite2Go

Volunteers may sign up HERE for delivery of Bite2Go food kits to Hamblen Elementary. We are again supporting 20 students with Bite2Go take-home meal supplements this school year. Your support has been tremendous the last several years and we look forward to your continued commitment. Volunteers are needed to pick up food at 2nd Harvest and drop off at Hamblen Elementary. Monetary donations help fund the program, which is $5.00 per week, per student. For those who wish to give support through monetary donations, please designate them for ‘Bite2go’.  You can find instructions and a map to Second Harvest HERE. For questions, call Karen Kelly at 509-599-7518. Thank you for committing to this ministry.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH MINISTRIES
JAM (Jesus and Me)
Children's Sunday School

J.A.M. Sunday School is in person right after the Children’s Sermon during worship. Face masks will be utilized. This year our theme is “Heroes of the Bible”. Three-year-old through 1st-grade children will gather in self contained classrooms using Augsburg Fortress curriculum to learn about their favorite Bible hero. Second grade through fifth grade continue their fun using the rotation model. Each week students will investigate a Bible hero as they rotate through food, games, computer, video, and science sites throughout the building.

Journey (Wednesday Evening Program for 1st-5th Graders)

Journey meets Wednesday evenings, 5:00 to 7:00pm. Mike Rose and team bring back those wonderful dinners. Karen Kelly brings all her teaching skills into play during our games time. We will have games, Bible study, highs and lows for the week, and laughter. A weekly donation of $4.00 is asked to help support some of the Journey activities. You are encouraged to bring a friend.
