WOULD YOU LIKE PASTORAL CARE OR A VISIT?

Throughout Covid, pastors and members of the congregational care team have continued our ministry of visiting and offering care. However, care and visits are now complicated. Institutional rules and safety precautions can even prevent visitations. If you would like a visit or call, please reach out any time. We are proactive in visiting people, but we also need to hear from anyone who would like a connection so that we don’t miss anyone in need. The pastors can be reached by email, cell phone, or through the church office. Hamblen is a church family. May the Lord continue to connect us with one another in safe ways even during the pandemic.

THIS WEEK'S NEWS

CAUTION: Watch for Scam Emails!

Please be aware that scammers are regularly targeting churches over email. The scammer creates a fake email address and pretends to be from a church staff member, but if you look closely you will see that the email does not come from the correct address.

The scam is usually to ask for help for someone in need. If you reply, the perpetrator will ask that you send money through e-gift cards. Staff will never request for you to do this! Please do not reply to these scam emails. If you receive a suspicious email and would like to check with the staff member about its origin, create a new email and select the staff member's email address from your contacts or click on the link for the staff member's email at the bottom of this e-news.

Again, do not reply to these phishing emails. Just mark it as spam or scam so that your email provider can prevent email from that address in the future. Be aware that this is an ongoing problem in churches around the world. The perpetrators will simply create a new email address and try again another time.

Join Us in Thanking Annie Flood on September 4

Annie Flood, our organist, pianist, and vocalist, is moving from Spokane and leaving her roles with Gonzaga and with us. It's been a joy to serve in ministry with Annie. She has brought wonderful musical gifts and a positive spirit. It's hard to say goodbye, but we look forward to continued friendship with her. Please join us on Sept. 4, when we will thank Annie in our worship service and give her a "card shower." Bring a thank-you card and eat some cake.

Deborah Circle

Deborah Circle meetings are starting again! Our first meeting will be Tuesday, September 6, 9:30AM to 12:00 in the Fellowship Hall. All other meetings will be on the first Monday of the month at 9:30 in the Fellowship Hall. Please bring a sack lunch. Coffee and dessert will be provided. All women are invited to join us.

We are a ministry and fellowship group that meets the first Monday of each month (except July and August) to share in fellowship as we make articles to share with those in need. We would like to invite all women of the church to join us as we gather to participate in a busy morning workshop, lunch (bring your own lunch, dessert and coffee will be provided), and a brief meeting to design and plan for the many items we donate yearly to schools, shelters, and care centers of our city.

We have been busy individually during the Covid pandemic and now as a group. We are excited to be meeting together again. Come and join us! Questions? Call or email Kathy Williams at 949-370-8025 or kathylwms@gmail.com.

Greetings from Guatemala

So far, the Guatemala mission team is keeping well and learning lots about Guatemala. Lauren Wallace (far left) and Mary Mattie (far right) are seen in the above photo with students from the Francisco Coll School in the garbage dump in Guatemala City. They visited them for encouragement and brought snacks and school supplies.

Virtual Journey to Guatemala: “The New Face of Mission”

Wednesday, August 24, 2022, 4:30 p.m.

What is the “New Face of Mission” in a world still reeling from colonialism? Join CEDEPCA for the next Virtual Journey to Guatemala where we will talk about what makes for healthy cross-cultural relationships. If you lead mission trips or ever plan to, this Virtual Journey is for you. We will use the new book, Freeing Congregational Mission: A Practical Vision for Companionship, Cultural Humility, and Co-Development, as the focal point in our conversation.

The book’s co-authors Hunter Farrell and Bala Khyllep are professors and directors of the World Mission Initiative at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. We are excited that both authors will be present to guide us on this Virtual Journey. Participants are encouraged to read the book beforehand for a richer experience.

To buy the book, please visit: freeingmission.com. If you buy the book at IVP, use discount code: MISSION for a 30% discount + free shipping in the USA.

Pre-registration is required HERE. Questions? Contact nancyc@cedepca.org or betsey.moe@pcusa.org

Paid Nursery Help Needed Urgently

We are currently understaffed in the nursery and are attempting to hire but have had no applicants. If you are over 18 and would be willing to work in the nursery one or two Sunday mornings a month or an occasional weekday evening, you would be a great blessing to those depending on the nursery. We want everyone to feel comfortable attending worship services or other events at Hamblen with their families and hope to continue offering childcare services to ensure families feel welcome. If you are able, please help us continue to provide this important service to our congregation and visitors. Thank you!

OPPORTUNITIES TO GET INVOLVED

Opportunities to Serve at HPPC & in the Community

Visit our website at hamblenpres.org/getinvolved to check out a list of ways to get involved at HPPC and grow as a disciple of Jesus. You will find 10 different categories along with a few examples of things that fit in each category. In front of each category is a checkbox. If you think you would like to try out a new ministry, print the list, check the box(es) of the categories that interest you, return it to the office, and we will contact you when we have a need for volunteers. Thank you for serving with us!

Call for Greeters

Anyone who would like to assist in greeting and passing out bulletins on Sunday mornings is encouraged to sign up as a greeter at hamblenpres.org/signup or on the sign-up sheet located at the information center. A greeter does not have to unlock doors or be in charge, but may help with the offering and tidying the pews after worship. A Head Usher will be available to assist and answer questions. Anyone can be a welcoming greeter!
