Updated Mask Guidance

Please wear your mask in the church building. We are implementing the statewide mask mandate for indoor settings. This includes vaccinated individuals. We do this, not out of fear, but as an act of love for our neighbors in the Spokane community and to practice Romans 13:1.

Wednesday Morning Bible Study Starts This Coming Week

Wednesday morning Bible study kicks off on September 22. Join us each week at 9:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall as we explore 1 Thessalonians. See the full schedule listed below under "Upcoming Events."
Deborah's Circle Update

Due to the Spokane County Health Department's recent report of the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, Deborah's Circle will not meet the remainder of this year. Even amidst the pandemic, Deborah's Circle has done well at achieving their goal for the number of ministry articles distributed to the Spokane schools and area rest homes this year before the cold weather sets in. Therefore, it was decided to cancel further meetings of Deborah Circle until after the first of the new year.
Top of the Hill

This popular group for retirement-aged friends meets the 1st Tuesday of the month at 11:30 AM starting in October. At this time, we are planning to meet in-person and hope to serve a meal like we have in the past (suggested donation $7). So that we can plan for food, please make a reservation through the church office a week prior to each meeting. If you prefer not to eat, but would like to come for the program, please make that known when you make your reservation and arrive by 12:00. Upcoming topics:

October 5—Mike Aleman, Poetry Reading
November -----To Be Determined
December 7—Jeannie Wright and Friends, Musical Program

To save your seat, contact Trina or Heather in the church office ([email protected] or [email protected]).
Children's Ministries

Children’s programs at HPPC begin this Sunday at 9:00 AM with our kickoff event "Heroes Unmasked." We are excited to invite children to take part in this event. Face masks are a must for this event for the safety of our children and dedicated volunteers. We still are in need of volunteers for Heroes Unmasked, for J.A.M. (Jesus And Me) Sunday School and our Wednesday evening Journey program for 1st through 5th grade.

We need:
  • Teachers for the 3 year old through 1st grade class
  • Rotation teachers for 2nd through 5th grade classes
  • Shepherds to assist teachers for 2nd through 5th grades
  • Music accompanist for J.A.M. Sunday School
  • Music leader for J.A.M. Sunday School

There are other volunteer opportunities available. Please sign up HERE to volunteer for one of these ministries that impact children. If you would like to help with Children's Ministries, please contact Joe Bruce at [email protected].
Acolyte Training

Fourth graders are invited to attend an upcoming Acolyte Training being held Sunday, October 3, at 10 AM in the sanctuary right after the worship service. Contact Kathy Williams at [email protected] with any questions.
Thank You for a Successful Shoe Drive!

Mission Community Outreach Center (MCOC) held the 11th annual School Shoes for Kids distribution on the last Friday of August. Nearly 900 pairs of new shoes and socks were given to kids entering K-8th grade. It was a wonderfully successful outdoor event. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible by volunteering or donating. MCOC, a ministry partner of Hamblen, is a Christian faith-based nonprofit organization committed to sharing the love of Christ to our community by reaching out with care.
HOW WE'RE HELPING OTHERS
Hurricane Ida Relief

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is delivering aid to those impacted by Hurricane Ida. This will be a long-term commitment to the people impacted by this catastrophic destruction. PDA will continue to work with Presbyterian leadership to respond to Hurricane Ida and remain engaged in the recovery efforts during the hurricane season of 2021. PDA will provide emotional and spiritual care as well as long-term recovery to address unmet needs. We invite you to join in this effort by donating HERE. Thank you for your support!
Bite2Go

Volunteers may sign up HERE for delivery of Bite2Go food kits to Hamblen Elementary. We are again supporting 20 students with Bite2Go take-home meal supplements this school year. Your support has been tremendous the last several years and we look forward to your continued commitment. Volunteers are needed to pick up food at 2nd Harvest and drop off at Hamblen Elementary. Monetary donations help fund the program, which is $5.00 per week, per student. For those who wish to give support through monetary donations, please designate them for ‘Bite2go’.  You can find instructions and a map to Second Harvest HERE. For questions, call Karen Kelly at 509-599-7518. Thank you for committing to this ministry.
Request for Mittens

The ladies of Deborah Circle need your help! We have been very busy making over 500 hats for grade school children. Here is where you can help: we need gloves to go with the hats. The one-size-fits-all for grade school children is what is needed. If you are able to help, you may drop off donations at the church by October 30. Questions? Contact Verla Enright at 509-624-6445. Thank you for your help!
Overnight Helper Needed

Mary Hopkins is in search of help for her mother, Margaret Hopkins (Peggy). Peggy is 93 years old, no longer able to attend services here at Hamblen, and had a recent fall from which she broke a couple of ribs. Peggy would like to stay in her home, and Mary is trying to make that possible. Peggy has licensed caregivers in her home during the day, but Mary would like someone there at night to help Peggy to the bathroom and prevent another fall.

The position would pay $20/hr and be scheduled from 8pm-9am. Mary said that the person could sleep while there as long as they would wake up to help Peggy when needed. The person does not need to be a skilled caregiver, but does need to be responsible, trustworthy, and dependable. Due to the nature of the assistance being provided by this person, a female is preferred. If you are interested in this role, please contact Trina in the office at [email protected].

Wednesday Morning Bible Study

In spite of its place at the back of our Bibles, Paul’s first letter to the church in Thessalonica is the oldest writing in the New Testament. In this letter, Paul encourages the community of disciples to persist in faith, hope, and love. This fall, we’ll take an in-depth look at Paul’s letter to those who “became very dear to him” (1 Thessalonians 2:8). Together we’ll discover how this ancient letter continues to encourage us as we grow in faith individually and as a community.

Wednesday morning Bible study kicks off on September 22. Join us each week at 9:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall as we explore 1 Thessalonians.

40 Days of Community

We need God and we need each other! After a year and a half of being apart, we want to offer a chance to come together again, grow as disciples of Jesus, and build back our sense of community. We invite you to commit to a 40-day practice of daily devotional reading using the book 40 Days of Community Devotional: What On Earth Are We Here For? Each day there is a short reading, a Point to Ponder, Verse to Remember, and Question to Consider, centered around five purposes: fellowship, spiritual growth, service, worship, and sharing the good news.

For 7 weeks, two groups will meet to discuss their experiences with the book, one group will meet on Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:30 PM, starting September 30, and the other on Sunday mornings immediately following the worship service, starting October 10 (this date is a change from the print newsletter). Both groups will meet in the Skylight Room and will be facilitated by Heather Notske. If you would like to purchase a book, have questions, or would like more information, contact Heather at 509-385-0627 or [email protected].

CHILDREN AND YOUTH MINISTRIES
JAM (Jesus and Me)
Children's Sunday School

J.A.M. Sunday School is in-person right after the Children’s Sermon during worship. Face masks will be utilized. This year our theme is “Heroes Unmasked”. Each week we will be studying about unforgettable Bible heroes. Three year old through 1st grade children will gather in self contained classrooms using Augsburg Fortress curriculum to learn about their favorite Bible hero. Second grade through fifth grade continue their fun using the rotation model. Each week students will investigate a Bible hero as they rotate through food, games, computer, video and science sites throughout the building.

Journey (Wednesday Evening Program for 1st-5th Graders)

Journey returns this year on Wednesday evenings, 5:00 to 7:00pm. Mike Rose and team bring those wonderful dinners back. Karen Kelly brings all her teaching skills into play during our games time. We will have games, Bible study, highs and lows for the week, and laughter. A weekly donation of $4.00 is asked to help support some of the Journey activities. You are encouraged to bring a friend.
