WORSHIP WITH US

The parables of Jesus are rich with life-changing discoveries for the thoughtful reader. This series will focus on parables that have not been preached at our church in many years. Some of them might be considered obscure, but all of them are powerful. Dig into the words of Jesus in this season with us.

THIS WEEK'S NEWS

Beginning THIS Sunday: Hope Thru Understanding

“All of us dislike a person who always speaks to us and never listens. If the Church doesn’t

listen to the world, then the world will never listen to the Church.” -Bernard Häring

This winter, join us for an exciting new Adult Education series tackling topics related to

Creation Care and climate disruption. We will meet Sundays at 10:15 AM, beginning January 21.

What do Lahaina, Acapulco, and Medical Lake have in common? They aren’t all tourist destinations and only one of those is nearby… We will answer that question and ask what stewardship, witness, and relevancy look like in 2024. And perhaps most important of all, we will ask what world we want to bequeath to our children and grandchildren.

The class will be based on an online curriculum developed by relatives of our church family, Rev. Bob and Anita Dygert-Gearhart, parents of HPPC church member Cindy Brigham-Althoff. Links to study guides and online materials will be provided.

There’s no expertise expected of class attendees, nor is it important that you come to every session. Whenever you can attend, it will start from basic science and Biblical principles, and lead to invigorating discussion.

At the end of our class, an invitation awaits to join with other groups in our area studying climate

concerns, so that we can help plant trees. More info on that effort as plans progress! Contact Roland Madany (509-995-4119) or Katie Haney (509-840-3456) if you are interested in becoming more earth-aware or active in Creation Care.

Share Your 2023 Faith

It's that time of year when we start preparing for the HPPC Annual Report, and we'd love to include your thoughts. You will find a short questionnaire at hamblenpres.org/share-your-faith. It contains prompts to help us learn about your personal experiences at HPPC over the past year. You can answer any of the five questions listed.

We are also requesting photos you may have taken in the past year at any HPPC activities. Please send photos to [email protected]. Thank you!

Small Group Forming: Ministering to the Homebound

Have you felt a prompting to participate in ministering to the homebound? If so, a small group is forming facilitated by Betty Rogers to pray for, connect with, and bring community to those in

our congregation who are no longer in a position to physically attend or actively participate in the life of the church.

If you feel prompted to be part of this small group in any capacity (either to reach out to a homebound individual OR a homebound individual wishing to be connected with someone on the team), please call or text Betty at (509) 230-7967.

Liberty Park Toy Store Update

Julie Cordero, the director of the Liberty Park Community Development Center, has shared more information about the success of the Toy Store. Overall, 22 families benefited from the opportunity to purchase toys for their children at the discounted prices. Some of the monies collected were then used by the Center’s Afterschool Program to ‘Pay it Forward.’ Children in the afterschool program found ways to benefit children around the world by donating toward the following ideas listed in the Presbyterian Giving Catalog:

$25 – to educate a child

$30 – school supplies for a displaced child in a refugee camp

$50 – for a sewing machine

$30 – for sapling trees

The domino effect is truly amazing… You donated the toys, the families were able to purchase Christmas joy for their children at a nominal price, and their children ‘paid it forward’ to other children in need around the world from the funds generated by the Toy Store. Blessings all around!

Pastor Ken Onstot is Retiring!

After 45 years of ministry, Pastor Ken is retiring at the end of January. Ken's first call was to Potlatch, ID and then he came to HPPC where he served for 26 years. He made the switch to Southminster Presbyterian in Des Moines, WA ten years ago. Many of you remember that he has three children who grew up at HPPC. He and his wife, Nadine, now have nine grandchildren who all live close by.

If you would like to send a card or message to Ken, here are ways to reach out:

Upcoming Memorial Services

  • There will be a memorial service for Tom Beil, step-son of Jerry Winters, this Saturday, January 20, at 2:00 PM.
  • A memorial service for Bruce Cutter will be held this Sunday, January 21, at 2:00 PM.

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

Snow Patrol

Each winter we are responsible to keep the church's entryways and the sidewalks around the perimeter of our property clear of snow and ice. We depend on volunteers for this critical ministry that keeps our neighbors safe. Training on our snowblower can be provided! If you would like to be responsible for a day or a week at a time, sign up HERE. If you have questions, contact Heather Notske at 509-385-0627 or [email protected]

Office Volunteers Needed

Are you interested in helping out in the office on a weekly or as-needed basis? We are looking for a few people who would be willing to:

  • Answer the phones for an hour or two at a time
  • Help with occasional mailings

If you would be interested in helping in any of these ways, sign up HERE. For questions, contact Heather Notske at 509-385-0627 or [email protected].
