WHAT'S HAPPENING AT HAMBLEN
Dear Friends,

My amazing wife, Kathy, is now on hospice care so I am immediately taking what leave I have to care for her and my family. Pastor Jennie will temporarily lead in my place and I am appointing her to moderate our session and the congregational meeting later this month. Jennie is a gifted colleague, and I am thankful to God for her as I know you are too.

Again, my family wants to say thank you for all your support, encouragement, and prayers. I know many of you have walked this journey and some of you are walking it right now as we are. In fact, those of you on the prayer chain prayed (as I did) for a brother at Hamblen who is also entering hospice care right now.

Our only hope is Jesus Christ. That is always true, but I am aware of that fact more than ever. Every other hope is failing Kathy, my family, and me right now, but Christ is our “sure and certain hope!"

Peace in Christ,
For the last Sunday in our Strength for Today, Hope for Tomorrow series, we welcome Rev. Janeen Steer, friend of the Watts family, to preach on 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 and explore the question: Am I part of the mission team?

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING ON ZOOM
NOVEMBER 29 AT 11 AM

Please attend a congregational meeting on Zoom Sunday, November 29 at 11 AM. At this meeting, we will designate pastors' housing allowances, elect officers and members to committees of the congregation, and authorize electronic meetings. We are uncertain that we can attain a quorum over Zoom, so we hope you will make time to attend! Here is the UPDATED link to join.

NEWS TO NOTE
NEW--BOOK STUDY--HOW TO BE AN ANTI-RACIST
SUNDAYS AT 2:00 PM BEGINNING DECEMBER 6

Concerned about Racial Equity? Join us for the third in our series of book studies on white privilege, systemic racism and where to go from here. We’ll be studying How to Be an Anti-Racist by Ibram X. Kendi. The author makes a strong case that you are either racist or anti-racist. You either believe one race is superior to another or that they’re equal. You can’t be neutral. Antiracism is a transformative concept that reorients and reenergizes the conversation about racism—and, even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other.

At its core, racism is a powerful system that creates false hierarchies of human value, antithetical to the values modeled by Jesus Christ. Its warped logic extends beyond race, from the way we regard people of different ethnicities or skin colors, to the way we treat people of different sexes, gender identities, and body types. Kendi weaves an electrifying combination of ethics, history, law, and science with his own personal story of awakening to antiracism. He admits to moments of his own racism, even though he is a black man. This is an essential work for anyone who wants to go beyond the awareness of racism to the next step: contributing to the formation of a just and equitable society. Check out his website and listen to his podcast for a taste. Facilitated by Katie Haney.

GIVE YOUR TIME/TALENT/TREASURE
2020 LIBERTY PARK COMMUNITY CHILDREN’S CENTER TOY STORE
Your Neighborhood Outreach Deacons are again sponsoring the TOY STORE drive. Your support for the Children’s Center is greatly appreciated. This ministry allows needy families a chance to purchase Christmas gifts for their children at a fraction of the actual cost of the item. In these uncertain times, families may need to choose between feeding their families over providing a little Christmas joy for their children.
The approach will be different this year.

Sign-up to donate specific ‘wish list’ items HERE on Sign Up Genius. To remain anonymous, use the words ‘TOY’ ‘STORE’ for first/last name along with your email address. Drop off items at church on the following days/times (social distancing/masks).

  • Wednesday, November 18, 6:00 - 7:00 PM
  • Sunday, November 22, 1:00 – 3:00 PM
  • Sunday, November 29, 1:00 – 3:00 PM
  • Tuesday, December 1, 6:00 – 7:00 PM

Feel free to offer monetary donations as well, designated for the Toy Store. If you wish to donate in this way you can contribute online HERE, deliver a check during these drop off times, or mail one to the church office at 4102 S Crestline St; Spokane, WA 99203. Please put "Toy Store" on the memo line.

You can sign up to supervise toy drop-off and/or to set up the Toy Store HERE.

THE TOY STORE WILL TAKE PLACE ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4TH

PLEDGE UPDATE

If you aren't sure where you stand on your pledge for 2020, please email Heather Notske at heathern@hamblenpres.org. If your circumstances have changed and you are no longer able to meet your pledge, please let Heather know that as well.

Pledges are coming in steadily for 2021! Thank you to everyone who has chosen to support our mission as we go forward into the new year. We have received a little over half of the number of cards expected, for a total of $480,845. It is encouraging to see that 43% of those that have made a pledge so far have chosen to increase their gift over what they pledged for 2020. We know increasing a pledge is not possible for many people (and we understand that others may need to decrease) so we are grateful to everyone who feels called to give in this way. THANK YOU!

If you have not yet submitted a pledge card for 2021, you may email Heather with next year's pledge amount or call her direct line at 509-385-0627.

You are always welcome to donate online at here, or mail a check to the church office at 4102 S Crestline St, Spokane, WA 99203.

DO YOU HAVE A HEART
TO SHARE CHRIST'S LOVE
AND WALK ALONGSIDE PEOPLE
AS THEY JOURNEY THROUGH DIFFICULT TIMES?

You're invited to consider joining the Congregational Care Team. This team provides one-to-one contact and encouragement for people in the congregation experiencing a critical situation in life. Team members give compassionate care, providing the ministry of listening, prayer, and, when needed, connecting people with resources. Please let Pastor Jennie know if you are interested in this ministry opportunity (jennieb@hamblenpres.org).

ADVENT ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES
NEW--ADVENT ORNAMENT CRAFT PROJECT

Hamblen has a long tradition of including families in an Advent Fair. During the Advent Fair families work together to create objects they use at home during the season of Advent. This year families are invited to stop by HPPC and pick up a packet with three Advent projects they can do at home with their children.

Pickup will be at the main entrance to the church Sunday, November 29 2:00-3:00 PM. These projects will walk you through each day of Advent and help you prepare for the coming of the Christ child. We hope you have a blessed Season of Advent.

Please do not hesitate to call Joe Bruce, 954-3041, if you have questions.

NEW--JESSE TREE ADVENT CRAFT PROJECT (ON ZOOM)

Join Joe Bruce for a special Jesse Tree Zoom class November 29 at 7:00 PM. Learn the story behind the Jesse Tree and get your own Jesse Tree to use during the Season of Advent.

Anyone from HPPC can participate. All you have to do is stop by the main entrance of HPPC on November 29 between 2:00 and 3:00 PM to pickup your project and then tune into the Zoom event at 7:00 PM.

To get the Zoom link you can email Joe at joeb@hamblenpres.org or email the HPPC office.
