WORSHIP WITH US

This year we prepare for Easter by intentionally growing as followers of Jesus. We'll explore themes from C.S. Lewis's book The Screwtape Letters, which will help us examine our Christian lives in ways that will be new to most people. You may choose to read along as the sermon series progresses and/or use the devotional guide. Neither of those activities is needed to be part of Sunday mornings. They are options you might consider.

First Sunday of the Month

Communion will be observed this Sunday. If you are worshiping with us from home and would like to celebrate communion during our Sunday morning service, please be sure to have a piece of bread or cracker and something to drink ready when worship begins.

Wednesday Morning Bible Study: Practices on the Path

Lent is a season that invites us to return to the path of discipleship. During the six weeks of Lent, our Wednesday morning Bible study will explore texts from the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John to discover the spiritual practices Jesus models for us. We’ll find ourselves drawn to deeper humility, trust, and faithfulness. Our time will encourage us to dive deeper into the scriptures from this year’s church Lenten study guide. Join us Wednesday mornings at 9:30 AM in the Skylight Room.

Open Palms Service Day

NEXT PRESENTATION:

March 12: AJ Crooks and Susan Heitstuman from Family Promise of Spokane will join us on Tuesday, March 12. Family homeless is the fastest growing segment of the homeless population in the U.S. and Spokane is no exception. In Spokane more than 12,000 moms, dads and kids will experience homelessness this year. Learn how Family Promise works to provide prevention services before families reach homelessness, providing shelter and case management when they become homeless, and their stabilization programs once they secure housing to ensure that they remain housed and independent.

Another Senior Exercise Opportunity for March

Have you thought about trying Tai Chi? Join us to sample a way to improve balance and lower body strength in one or all of our free 60-minute exercise classes at 1:00 PM on these Thursdays in March:

  • 3/7 Fellowship Hall
  • 3/14 Fellowship Hall
  • 3/21 Skylight Room

Sandy Nolting is trained in Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance. She will guide you in an introduction to this evidenced-based practice for fall reduction. Dress comfortably, bring water, and invite a friend or family member. Class is mostly standing but can be modified if you need to stay seated.

Family Promise

Members of Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church have always volunteered to support Family Promise. In previous years, we’ve had families spending nights at our church and we have taken meals to families in their group homes.

Many changes have taken place within the Family Promise organization. There are new opportunities for individuals and groups to support their mission. You may sign up for individual opportunities by clicking on this link: [email protected]

You can also sign up to go to one of their open houses by looking for COME & SEE on their website: www.familypromiseofspokane.org

We all have talents that we can share. Thank you for considering how you can make a difference in reaching out to our mission partners and stay tuned for group activities you can participate in.

New Grief Support Group Starting Soon

Grief looks different for everyone and processing feelings with others can be a huge help. Join Heather Notske for a new grief group that will meet 2nd Mondays at 1:30 PM at the church, starting March 11. Other dates are April 8, May 13, and June 10. We will take a break over the summer.

This will be a safe place for people to share how they are coping with the loss of a loved one--spouse, parent, family member, or friend. Come when you can, you do not need to be at every session. There is no cost to attend.

If you have any questions, please call Heather's direct office line (509-385-0627) or email her at [email protected]. Hope to see you there!

Intergenerational Class: Hope Thru Understanding

Join Us Through March 17

Join us for an exciting new multi-generational series tackling topics related to Creation Care and climate disruption. We meet Sundays at 10:15 AM in the Skylight Room.

The class will be based on an online curriculum developed by relatives of our church family, Rev. Bob and Anita Dygert-Gearhart, parents of HPPC church member Cindy Brigham-Althoff. Links to study guides and online materials will be provided.

There’s no expertise expected of class attendees, nor is it important that you come to every session. Whenever you can attend, it will start from basic science and Biblical principles, and lead to invigorating discussion.

Contact Roland Madany (509-995-4119) or Katie Haney (509-840-3456) if you are interested in becoming more earth-aware or active in Creation Care.

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

One Great Hour of Sharing

Did you know that most youth in Guatemala only have school opportunities through sixth grade? This year, your gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing will help provide job training for teens in Guatemala through the Self-Development of People Project. Click HERE to learn more about this important program.

Come to Guatemala with Us!

We are planning a visit to see our friends and colleagues in Coban, Guatemala. The dates of the trip are August 17 through 24. We plan to spend two days with our friends at La Libertad School, where we have been working with the staff on a reading program, Libros Abiertos. The latter part of the week is still in the planning stages, we hope to visit Amanda Flayer-Chif and work at her school, Puerta Abierta. This would also give us an opportunity to see Lake Atitlan, one of Guatemala's treasures.

The goal of this trip is to continue our relationship with the students and staff at La Libertad and encourage them in their education. They are dreaming of an expanded library and we want to explore this project idea with them. We also want to encourage Puerta Abierta and possibly help with construction of a sensory garden on its property.

Lots of details still to be determined, but if you are at all interested, or have questions, please reach out. We want to talk with you! Contact Mary Mattie at 509-998-9646, [email protected] or Joe Bruce at 509-954-3041, [email protected].

Small Group Forming: Ministering to the Homebound

Have you felt a prompting to participate in ministering to the homebound? If so, a small group is forming facilitated by Betty Rogers to pray for, connect with, and bring community to those in

our congregation who are no longer in a position to physically attend or actively participate in the life of the church.

If you feel prompted to be part of this small group in any capacity (either to reach out to a homebound individual OR a homebound individual wishing to be connected with someone on the team), please call or text Betty at (509) 230-7967.

Sign Up for an Office Volunteer Shift

Are you interested in helping out in the office on a weekly or as-needed basis? We are looking for a few people who would be willing to:

  • Answer the phones for an hour or two at a time
  • Help with occasional mailings

If you would be interested in helping in any of these ways, sign up HERE. For questions, contact Heather Notske at 509-385-0627 or [email protected].
