Summer marks a time when many of us draw near to water. We gather with family and friends at cabins. We kayak in the early morning stillness. We ride through the waves on skis and wakeboards. We float lazily on rivers. Proximity to the water helps many of us rest, relax, play, connect, and breathe. When we turn to scripture, we see God calling, growing, and transforming people on the banks of rivers, the shores of lakes, and the waves of raging seas. From the water, stories of God’s work emerge. For the rest of the summer, we’re going to explore these Old and New Testament stories together. Our summer sermon series, Lake Life, will look at the ways God forms people on the banks and in the depths of water. Particular themes will emerge from the stories we hear each week: identity, transformation, courage, growth, community, calling, rescue, and resurrection. Join us this summer as we encounter God in new ways and grow in our relationship with Jesus. We’ll see you at the lake!

Updated Mask Guidance
Please wear your mask in the church building. We are implementing the statewide mask mandate for indoor settings. This includes vaccinated individuals. We do this, not out of fear, but as an act of love for our neighbors in the Spokane community and to practice Romans 13:1.

Thank You!
A special thank you is necessary for Mel Christopher who has faithfully mowed our lawn for around a decade. Mel has recently retired from this ministry and passed the lawnmower on to the Auld family. Thank you, Mel, for many years of service and thank you, Auld Family, for taking this on. We appreciate you!!

Request for Mittens
The ladies of Deborah Circle need your help! We have been very busy making over 500 hats for grade school children. Here is where you can help: we need gloves to go with the hats. The one-size-fits-all for grade school children is what is needed. If you are able to help, you may drop off donations at the church by October 30. Questions? Contact Verla Enright at 509-624-6445. Thank you for your help!

Wednesday Morning Bible Study
In spite of its place at the back of our Bibles, Paul’s first letter to the church in Thessalonica is the oldest writing in the New Testament. In this letter, Paul encourages the community of disciples to persist in faith, hope, and love. This fall, we’ll take an in-depth look at Paul’s letter to those who “became very dear to him” (1 Thessalonians 2:8). Together we’ll discover how this ancient letter continues to encourage us as we grow in faith individually and as a community.
Wednesday morning Bible study kicks off on September 22. Join us each week at 9:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall as we explore 1 Thessalonians.
September 22: Introduction and Chapter 1
September 29: Chapter 2:1-12
October 6: Chapter 2:13-20, 3:1-5
October 13: Chapter 3:6-11
October 20: Chapter 4:1-8
October 27: Chapter 4:9-18
November 3: Chapter 5:1-11
November 10: Chapter 5:12-28

Overnight Helper Needed
Mary Hopkins is in search of help for her mother, Margaret Hopkins (Peggy). Peggy is 93 years old, no longer able to attend services here at Hamblen, and had a recent fall from which she broke a couple of ribs. Peggy would like to stay in her home, and Mary is trying to make that possible. Peggy has licensed caregivers in her home during the day, but Mary would like someone there at night to help Peggy to the bathroom and prevent another fall.
The position would pay $20/hr and be scheduled from 8pm-9am. Mary said that the person could sleep while there as long as they would wake up to help Peggy when needed. The person does not need to be a skilled caregiver, but does need to be responsible, trustworthy, and dependable. Due to the nature of the assistance being provided by this person, a female is preferred. If you are interested in this role, please contact Trina in the office at trinal@hamblenpres.org.

40 Days of Community
We need God and we need each other! After a year and a half of being apart, we want to offer a chance to come together again, grow as disciples of Jesus, and build back our sense of community. We invite you to commit to a 40-day practice of daily devotional reading using the book 40 Days of Community Devotional: What On Earth Are We Here For? Each day there is a short reading, a Point to Ponder, Verse to Remember, and Question to Consider, centered around five purposes: fellowship, spiritual growth, service, worship, and sharing the good news.
For 7 weeks, two groups will meet to discuss their experiences with the book, one group will meet on Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:30 PM, starting September 30, and the other on Sunday mornings immediately following the worship service, starting October 10 (this date is a change from the print newsletter). Both groups will meet in the Skylight Room and will be facilitated by Heather Notske. If you would like to purchase a book, have questions, or would like more information, contact Heather at 509-385-0627 or heathern@hamblenpres.org.
