PRIDE MONTH HISTORY
RUTH ELLIS
Ruth Ellis (1899-2000) grew up in Springfield, IL, and was accepted by her family when she came out as a lesbian at the age of 16. She and her long-time partner moved to Detroit when Ms Ellis was in her late 30's. She became a printer, the first woman in Michigan to run her own printing business. She ran the printing business from the front room of her home, which soon became a center of activity for the Black LGBTQ+ community of Detroit.

Ms Ellis was especially concerned for the young people, who were not often as accepted and supported by their families as she had been. At the time of Stonewall, she was 70, but toured the country speaking on LGLBTQ+ rights. At the age of 100, she led the San Francisco Dyke March. A documentary has been made of her life, "Living With Pride: Ruth C. Ellis @ 100." She is remembered in the name of the Ruth Ellis Center, a community center and shelter for LGBTQ+ homeless and
at-risk youth in Detroit.

SHARE FOOD, SHARE LOVE, FOOD PANTRY
Summer should be a wonderful time of year. Our thoughts go to picnics, camping, swimming and so many other fun-filled activities. But for some, summer is just another season during which they struggle to provide their family with healthy, nourishing food.

But some families will have a hard time. Rising food costs caused by inflation, when combined with the ongoing pandemic, means that many family budgets that were already stretched thin, are no longer adequate to provide for their needs. Sometimes it is even necessary for families to do without essential items like medicine or professional health care, so that everyone has enough to eat.

You can make a real difference. Donating now is so important please take a minute to give so we can feed the hungry in our area.
Thank you!

A $1 Donation Can Provide 6 Meals!
