ASH WEDNESDAY & LENT INFORMATION
Ash Wednesday and Lent
Ash Wednesday is February 17. We will have open house hours for anyone who would like to come by the church to have ashes placed on their foreheads or hands. You may come anytime between 3 and 4 pm or between 6 and 7 pm. We will be outside by the garage, please wear masks and social distance.
Ash Wednesday is also the beginning of the church season known as Lent, a time of preparation and remembrance as we move towards Easter. This year, we will offer Lent in a Bag, containing small items as a focus for reflection and prayer. Each item will be the center of one of Rev. Martha’s Sunday messages during Lent. Lent in a Bag will be available when you come for ashes, or you may request they be mailed to you (please request a mailing by February 8, to ensure the bag reaches you in time).
WABI SABI
FILM FESTIVAL
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12 AT 10 AM

This is a film festival about aging, a film festival for older people, though everyone is welcome to attend. Following the film, stay in your seats; we’ll have an interactive discussion about topics from each film. Every three months we’ll show a different film connected to the theme of aging, followed by an interactive discussion.

By the way, wabi sabi isn’t the green spicy stuff at the sushi restaurant. It is the Japanese world view that appreciates the beauty of impermanence.

Duty-Free is about Rebecca who worked every day of her life as a hotel housekeeper to give her two sons, Sian-Pierre and Gabriel, every opportunity life could afford. When it was time for Sian-Pierre to go to college, she even cashed out her 401K to give him the best education possible. But when she was suddenly fired from her job at 75, Rebecca was left with nothing: no savings, no safety net, and no future job prospects. Now, Sian-Pierre is giving her back the life she sacrificed and helping her to reclaim her future, one bucket-list adventure at a time.
Ageism and Financial Insecurity in America are pervasive. Older folks are invisible in their communities, workplaces, and, sometimes, within their own families. An estimated 25 million won’t have enough money to get through retirement age.

AURORA PRIDE - SELLING SINGING TELEGRAMS!

Aurora Pride is selling virtual singing telegrams for Valentine's Day! Supporters may purchase a video telegram of a song performed by a local musician. The musicians have volunteered to record a video of their performance. Aurora Pride will then send out the digital telegrams with the senders’ warm wishes to friends and family.

Telegrams are available for purchase via aurorapride.org

Telegrams are available in 3 formats:
General ($10): Aurora Pride will send an email to the recipient telling them that the purchaser has sent a singing telegram. The email will contain a link to the song.

Personalized ($25): The video will be specific to the recipient. The video will contain slides with the recipient’s name, the sender’s name, and an optional brief message from the sender.

Custom ($50): The recipient will get a personalized (as described above), PLUS the performer will mention the recipient in the video. Quantities are limited.
Ordering deadlines vary by product. Custom telegrams must be purchased by Monday, February 1. Personalized telegrams must be purchased by Monday, February 8. General telegrams are available through February 12.

All proceeds from the program will go toward the Aurora Pride Parade (or 2021 alternative, pending health and safety guidelines).

Aurora, IL Pride wishes to thank the performers who have volunteered to share their talents for this project: Alli Carroll (from the band Sweetie), Nicole Mullins, Kenneth Lambert, Kevin Trudo, Michelle Lee, and Michelle Curiel. BLACK HISTORY MONTH VIDEO
"Black is the Color of Love
Dr. Stephan Scoggins is a member of MCC's Mother Church, Founders MCC of Los Angeles. He writes: "As I travel across the country, I always consider Founders MCC in Los Angeles, California my home church. It was there, where for many years, I have enjoyed the fellowship and education from Rev. Troy Perry. His legendary example of fighting for equality and inclusivity has been instrumental and influential in my commitment to taking the baton and continuing to voice the necessity of civil rights.

I am humbled to launch my new video, "Black is the color of love". As I listen to my mother's narration and the words that she captured in writing the song, I am reminded that we are ALL responsible for creating unity. I am so glad that my village is comprised of law enforcement, clergy, frontline healthcare workers, educators, LGBT, military, civil rights activists, and many more. We don’t have to be against someone else to be for ourselves."
