4th Week of Advent - ANGELS

This Sunday is a doubleheader, so to speak—at the morning service, we celebrate the fourth Sunday of Advent, and in the evening we we celebrate Christmas Eve, the birth of Jesus the Christ. This happens once every seven years, as Christmas Eve cycles through the days of the week.

This week our image is Angels—the messengers of God. They appear several times in the Christmas story—to John’s father, Zechariah; to Mary, inviting her to become Jesus’ mother; to Joseph, reassuring him that Mary’s pregnancy is blessed by God, to the shepherds announcing Jesus; birth; and to the wise ones, warning them to go another way home. Angels are probably the most popular image, or symbol, of Christmas, next to the star itself—which is our image for the Christmas Eve service.

Messengers of God. They carry the requests, the reassurance, the blessing of God to individuals. We can be angels—we can reassure, comfort, share—we can be angels. Not only can we be angels, we’re surrounded by angels—if we only recognize them.

Know Any Older Adults who Need Home Repairs?

We have an incredible gift/program to be able to bring to our clients. Please think of anyone you know who might meet the eligibility requirements and can benefit from this service – anyone with safety concerns or issues, poor lighting, no handrails near stairs, no grab bars in the bathroom, no smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors, is there a need for a lock box, etc.? Are there any areas in need of repair – cracks, uneven flooring, broken doors or locks etc.? Do you live in the northern part of Cook County?

If you know of someone, please contact Jan Walch to see if they can help.

SHARE FOOD, SHARE LOVE

FOOD PANTRY NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Food insecurity has become a public health crisis that continues to affect our communities, with an alarming increase of 19 in the number of households facing hunger compared to pandemic levels. The situation is even worse for Black households, as the number has risen by 37. With the recent cancellation of extra money in the SNAP program, it is now more vital than ever to support organizations like Share Food Share Love.

By donating to the Share Food Share Love Food Pantry, you can make a real difference in the lives of those who are struggling to put food on the table. With just a $1.00 donation, you can help provide 3 meals for a family in need. Your generosity can help ensure that our neighbors do not go hungry.

We are calling on all members of our community to help us fight food insecurity by donating to the Share Food Share Love Food Pantry. There is a food box located in front of Tischler's where you can drop off your non-perishable food items 2/47 or bring your food donations to the church and we will take it over. Let's come together to support each other during these challenging times. Thank you for your support!

If you live in the surrounding area of Brookfield, you may qualify to be our neighbor at Share Food, Share Love. You can stop in on Tuesday evenings 7pm to 9 pm and Saturday mornings 10 am to 12 pm to apply and gather up some food for you and your family. If you do come, please try to bring your own reusable bags but if you forget, we will have bags for you.

The food box located in front of Tischler's where you can drop off your non-perishable food into this box 24/7!

Thank you!

PASTOR'S PICK CORNER -

Rev. Daniels Reading/Listening/Watching Suggestions

With Thanksgiving behind us, preparations for Christmas begin! Here are some movies and books that not only celebrate Christmas but lead us to ponder on the deeper meanings of Christmas.

A Christmas Carol: There are several wonderful movie adaptations available (my two favorites are the 1954 Alistair Sims version and The Muppets Christmas Carol with Michael Caine). If you haven't already, find and read Charles Dickens' novella on which they are all based. While Dickens celebrates the festive aspects of Christmas--the feast, the punch, the games--he makes the point that our well-being is not based on our bank ledger, but our love and care (or lack thereof) for others.

It's a Wonderful Life--an old favorite for the holidays, and again focusing on the value of friendship over worldly possessions. Who doesn't want to live in Bedford Falls when George Bailey is around?

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever--What happens when the "wildest kids in town" want to be part of the church Christmas pageant, even though they don't know much about Jesus? The questions they ask make the adults around them question themselves--and maybe their hearts grow a bit too.

Speaking of hearts growing,

I'll close with another Christmas classic--How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Of course, the Grinch didn't steal Christmas, did he? Which is the point of this wonderful Dr. Suess story, which has contributed to our Christmas vocabulary. "Don't be a Grinch!" we say, and my family still calls the main course at Christmas dinner "roast beast."

Yours Adventfully,

Rev. Martha
