Week of Monday, January 26, 2026 | | There are so many things to do at the library. When you're climbing the walls at home, consider stopping by. We've got a little something for everybody. | | | | |
Tiny Bookshelf:
18:12 Prompt #13:
Don't (moral) panic!
| |
The 18:12 Reading Challenge is designed to get you out of your reading box, with 18 prompts to inspire your reading throughout the year. You can find out all about it here.
This Tiny Bookshelf is devoted to Prompt #13: Don't (Moral) Panic!
A moral panic is a wave of public concern and fear about a perceived threat to society's values or safety, often focused on a specific group or behavior. (Think Salem Witch Trials). The reaction is typically disproportionate to the actual danger. (Let's all keep our wits about us!)

Are you a fixer, repairer or uniquely gifted with your hands?
If you're someone who has a unique or general talent for fixing things, we'd love to add you to our volunteer list to participate in future Repair Fairs. If you can fix lamps, mend clothes, sharpen tools or knives, fix bikes, work with leather, repair jewelry, work on small engines, patch inflatables, or otherwise REPAIR THINGS, send an email to Kelly at kgreenlee@townofcumberlandmaine.gov. Spread the word to fixers in your life.
What's a Repair Fair? Well, it's a whole lot of fun is what it is. We gather repairer and fixers to share their skills to repair items for people in our community. The event has a vibe, and it's very upbeat. We can't do it without the talented folks who give their time and talents to the event.
By the way, if you're already on Kelly's fixer list, thank you. You're still on the list. Kelly will be in touch soon about a future date.

- NO frozen vegetable or fruit bags
- ONLY soft stretchy plastic bags. Think newspaper bags, produce bags ... also cereal bags

Craft kits are available for library use
Winter can be hard. When you're climbing
the walls, it might just be time to visit the library. To
sweeten the experience, we've just added a craft
corner for itchy fingers of any age.
We have a selection of craft kits available for keeping
people of all ages busy at the library. The kits are
located on the shelves in the solarium at the far end of
the library. You'll find kits for needle felting, crochet,
watercolor, mandala, origami, coloring, drawing, and
cross stitch. Take a look next time you're in the library.
And, yes, feel free to take them off the shelf to busy
yourself while you're here.

The news seems to report a new lawsuit over artificial intelligence every week. Most involve authors, artists, and musicians suing over copyright.
Join copyright expert Kevin Smith to discuss these developments and how the law and AI may interact in the future. If you are an artist trying to understand the current marketplace for your work, or just someone interested in AI and the law, this is a discussion you will want to be part of.
Kevin Smith is both a librarian and a lawyer and has spent his career at the intersection of copyright and creativity.

From the publisher:
Warring clans. Burning hearts. Deadly fate.
The clans of the fens enjoy a tenuous peace, and it is all thanks to Agnir, ward and hostage. For as long as she can remember she has lived among the enemy, learning their ways, growing strong alongside their children. When a burgeoning love for the chieftain’s daughter lures them both to a hidden spring, a magic awakens in them that could bind the clans under one banner at last—or destroy any hope of peace. By working their intentions into leather, they can weave misfortune for their enemies… just like the Fate’s Bane that haunts the legends of the clans.
Ambitions grow in their fathers’ hearts, grudges threaten a return to violence, and greedy enemies wait outside the borders, seeking a foothold to claim the fens for themselves. And though their Makings may save their families, the legend that gave them this power always exacts its price.
Need a copy of the book? This one isn't in Minerva yet. We have a couple of copies to share; email Jennifer at jbenham@townofcumberlandmaine.gov or stop by the library to get put on the list. You'll get a copy lickety-split!
New faces always welcome.
