Climate Courage &

Mental Health

with Dr. Anne Hallward

Tuesday, March 29

7 to 8:30 p.m. (virtual)

Climate Courage _ Mental Health.jpg

Coping with the mental health impacts of climate change can make us more effective at combatting it. We will explore the forces that help us summon up our courage to face reality, bear the painful feelings that come up, and move together to take action. In particular, we will explore tools that help each of us access our own courage, so that we can take steps fueled by love and clarity that lead to greater strength, connection, and impact.

Participants will have the opportunity to engage with others to fully benefit from

this program.

anne hallward small.jpg

Dr. Anne Hallward is host and founder of Safe Space Radio and a board-certified psychiatrist in Portland. She is passionate about creating spaces for people to talk about difficult subjects so that we are not alone with our worst struggles. Anne speaks internationally on stigma and shame,

traumatic silence, re-humanization, and emotional courage.

This program is offered in collaboration with Scarborough Public Library and York Public Library. (Register (below) via York Public Library's website).

The Archaeology of Casco Bay

Shell middens and archaeological storytelling on Maine's coasts

Thursday, April 7 at 6:30 p.m.

The middens of Casco Bay: An examination and discussion

shell midden Worked deer bone harpoons small.jpg

These worked deer bone harpoons, found in a shell midden, are archaeological finds that tell historians a story about the Indigenous people who lived on this land long ago. Shell middens are accumulations of shells, bones, and artifacts found along Maine's coasts, and they are rich with history. The stories middens tell give us a glimpse into life long ago.

Thomas Bennett offers insight on the importance of shell middens and how private citizens can become involved in preserving this important cultural resource. This is a second of a two-part virtual presentation offered in collaboration with Chebeague and Cumberland Land Trust.

Thomas first excavated a shell midden on Mosher Island in Freeport in 1986. He has worked on archaeological digs in Arizona, Maine, and Massachusetts, where he was field supervisor on the Boston Harbor/Spectacle Island shell midden dig, a component of the Big Dig.

In case of inclement weather

It's snowy season, and that means the library may close because of tricky conditions. Before you head to the library in inclement weather, check our website to be sure that we are open. Alternatively, Facebook users can check our Facebook page for updates.

Ah, taxes!!

While PML no longer gets tax forms mailed to us, we (librarians) can access forms and instructions online, and we are happy to print them out when needed. We do not print the entire 114-page instruction book, but we will do individual worksheets, tables, etc.

Seniors, each year AARP offers tax prep assistance for seniors (usually at a larger public library. In the past it has been Portland's main branch and Lewiston). They have not yet populated the location finder, but seniors can go to this site to learn more:
