Tiny Bookshelf: Latinx & Hispanic Heritage Month

It's Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15), and we're shining a light on the many contributions of Hispanic and LatinX Americans who have influenced us through books.

The observance's mid-month beginning and ending was chosen to coincide with the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, as well as Mexico and Chile. The month is also referred to as Latino Heritage Month or Latinx Heritage Month.

PML Afternoon Book Group starts up again this week

September is a month of new beginnings. It smells of apples and turning leaves and new books. At PML, it is the month when our book groups return, old friends and new, to choose books, read together, and learn.

We have groups for all readers. This week, the PML Afternoon Book Group meets (the last Thursday of most months) and engages adults with a mix of literary fiction and nonfiction. We welcome new members.

Our first meeting of the season — September 29 — is a lively one, as we work our way through an already overcrowded list of really great titles to choose our books for fall. If you ever considered joining a smart, savvy set of readers to talk books with, this may be the opportunity for you!

Chess, anyone?

Are you a chess player looking to play? Would you be interested in an adult chess group at the library? If so, drop Kelly an email at kgreenlee@cumberlandmaine.com. She'll add your name to an email list and will be in touch.

Visit the Farnsworth Art Museum

PML now has museum passes to the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine, thanks to the generosity of the Friends of PML. The pass admits up to 4 adults. Children under 16 are free.

As with all of its museum passes, PML is able to issue one pass per day to the Farnsworth. Call or stop by the library to reserve your pass.

CLYNK for Friends

Pick up a fully tagged CLYNK bag in the Friends' book sale room at the library. All proceeds from returned bottles and cans benefit the Friends of PML ... which, in turn, benefit the library.

And while you're in the book sale room ... well ... take a look. You won't believe the selection and the prices.

Power in Aging

Embracing Aging to Build an Age-Positive Maine

Tuesday, October 11 at 6:30 p.m.

Virtual via Zoom.

Registration is required.

When you look at yourself as an older person, what do see? It turns out what we think, feel, and believe about getting older matters! If we live with positive beliefs about our own aging, research has found that we're likely to live 7.5 years longer than those who believe aging as about disease and decline. Age-positive beliefs also lead to better brain health, and less chronic disease and anxiety. Better still, research shows that all across the world, including in the US, people are their happiest in their later years.

So, why are so many of us worried about aging and being old? The answer is ageism, and it’s so ingrained in us that many Americans don’t even believe it’s real!

Maine Council on Aging (MCOA) has launched a new anti-ageism movement in Maine called the Power in Aging Project. The goal of the project is to build a more age-positive culture in Maine through conversation and action. The Embracing Aging presentation will talk about ageism and its impacts and explore the effects of age-positivity.

  • We can embrace positive beliefs about growing older.
  • We can learn more about our own age-bias and avoid acting on it.
  • We can listen for negative age-stereotypes and shift those beliefs to positive.

Don Harden is a founding Board Member of the Maine Council on Aging and coordinates the Power in Aging Project, MCOA’s new anti-ageism campaign.
