Welcome, Melissa!

After volunteering over the past year in various capacities, Melissa Hankens has joined the PML staff as the Youth Services assistant. Melissa is a local textile artist and maker of things (check out the loom she built for the teen room!), and she is excited to bring her creative enthusiasm to the PML. When she isn't making something in her studio, Melissa can be found reading, gardening, running around with her dog, Pepper, or searching for the best kettle corn in Maine. She lives in Cumberland with her husband, her son, the aforementioned Pepper, Pete the Cat (not THAT Pete the Cat), five chickens of various names, and 15 fish, none of whom have been named.

Welcome aboard, Melissa!

Tiny Bookshelf:

You don't need to own a boat. You just need a FRIEND who owns a boat. Or you need a book. Or, hey! Maybe BOTH!

Patting ourselves on the back

Why not?

It's that time of year again. We've just submitted the PML annual report to the Town of Cumberland, and we thought we'd share it here, too. To be clear, the town's annual report needs to be compiled and printed, which is a big task, so it won't be fully ready until the fall. Get a sneak peek at our little piece of the puzzle here.

Newest art exhibit features a talented, local painter

Jeanne Mitchell's works will be on display through August 18

Jeanne Mitchell achieved her goal of painting one small canvas every week for a year last year. See some of the fruits of that labor of love, currently on exhibit in the Prince Room. The paintings are small but varied and full of detail. Worth a look next time you're in the library.

Bendable Maine is being discontinued in late August

We've just received word that Bendable Maine is not being renewed at the state level. This online learning community will be available to patrons through August 22, after which point it will be discontinued and no longer accessible.

Recommend a book or audiobook

We'd love to hear from you. Tell us book or audiobook titles that you think others would like. No reviews required. Just tell us a title or two. Information like this is helpful when we make book recommendations or create a Tiny Bookshelf (above). Responses are anonymous.

Casey, also from Cumberland, will kick off the conversation.  Audience participation is encouraged! A longtime teacher in Cape Elizabeth, Cameron will discuss her road to publication, writing as art therapy, and why we need books that open difficult conversations.
