The 18:12 Reading Challenge 18 Books : 12 Months

A new challenge with new reading prompts. Get in on the fun!

Well, we've done it again. We've put together a reading challenge for you for 2023. We've compiled a list of 18 reading prompts for you, and we challenge you to read a book from each category before the end of the year.

We hope it keeps you engaged as a reader and offers a little lift to your usual reading regimen. Let's face it: We've all been in the reading rut before, and it's ... well ... it's boring. We made the categories general enough that anyone can find something they like. Really! Give it a go.

Print or download your own copy, or grab a copy next time you're at the library. We hope you'll join us.

And speaking of joining us: We have a Facebook Group for 18:12ers. Join us there for advice on what to read next and learn what others are reading.

Tiny Bookshelf:

Strange Weather

This weather is weird, don't you think? Our featured book list is all about the weather. Pssst! It's also one of the prompts for our 18:12 Reading Challenge.

Camden Conference 2023

Global Trade and Politics

Prince Memorial Library has teamed up with Kennebunk Free Library, Patten Free Library, Scarborough Public Library, and York Public Library to offer a wide range of topical discussions that enhance the learning experience of those who attend the Camden Conference in February or for anyone who is interested in learning more about global trade and politics from area experts and educators.

Get a sneak peek at the lineup.

Register for each event individually. Each registration link will take you to the host library's calendar listing. For even more events offered through this year's Camden Conference slate of events, visit the Camden Conference website.

Snow day?

Wondering if the library is open on a stormy or snowy day? We post closing information on the front page of our website and on Facebook and Instagram.

Chess champ!

Congratulations to Steve Greenlee (above, left), winner of the first PML Round-Robin Chess Challenge. Ten players challenged each other over the course of 10 weeks in late fall/early winter. Steve and Owen Lisa came out on top. Congratulations to them both.

This week marks the start of a new round-robin with new players. If you see them playing chess at the library, give them a nod. They might just be sweating under that calm demeanor.

RESCHEDULED TO THIS WEEK

Prince Memorial Library:

Our Place in History

Tuesday, January 17 at 1 p.m.

In-person at PML

On January 7, 1923, a library opened to the

public in Cumberland, and more than 600 books from a community collection joined a small selection of new books on the shelves. The rest, as they say, is history. But there is more to be said about the events leading up to and including the establishment

of this library that, 100 years later, now serves the towns of Cumberland and North Yarmouth.

Thomas Bennett is a local historian and director of Prince Memorial Library.

THIS WEEK

21st-Century Human Migration and Global Trade

A Camden Conference Event

Tuesday, January 17 at 6:30 p.m.

Virtual via Zoom. Registration is required.

This is the second of two lectures on immigration’s impact on Global Trade and Politics.

Migration is caused by people searching for a better material life and safety. What is the effect of this migration process on global trade? We look at the late 20th- and 21st-century picture and in particular the impact of increased migration to the U.S. from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Discussion will also include the economic impact of migration from Asia and Africa to Europe.

Kathleen Howard Sutherland (Ph.D. Indiana University) is Associate Professor Emerita of Political Science at Bowling Green State University.

Understanding Gender and Sexuality Today

A 3-part workshop series to demystify and clarify

Thursdays, January 19, February 2, and February 16 (snowdate: March 2)

6:30 p.m.

In-person at PML

Registration is limited and required.

This is a 3-part workshop series for adults and teens who want to better understand the complex topic of gender and sexuality. We'll cover basic terminology and the different perceptions and origins of sexual identity, and we'll explore and discuss sources and impacts of discrimination against gender non-conforming people, especially within the younger population. We'll also discuss how to understand and improve our roles as allies of those within the LGBTQIA community.

The workshop will include presentations and discussion, some exercises, and no quizzes or homework. Print, online, and other resources will be provided for those who wish to develop a broader understanding of what is covered. Adults and teens are welcome.

This workshop is a learning opportunity for adults who want to better understand what their children or grandchildren are discussing at the lunch table or for those who want to better equip themselves when working with or talking to gender non-conforming individuals. It is not an opportunity for political discourse.

Christine Caulfield (she/her) is currently a volunteer at MaineTrans.Net, a statewide non-profit that supports transgender people in many capacities.

What's in My Sandwich?

GMOs, hormones and consumer health play a key role in the future of trade negotiations

A Camden Conference Event

Tuesday, January 24 at 6:30 p.m.

Virtual via Zoom. Registration is required.

Despite decades of efforts, the EU and the US have not been able to sign a comprehensive trade agreement. In the meanwhile, other global actors like China are increasingly influencing international commerce. What can explain this failure and what does it say about the future?

A key reason for the failure have been tensions over GMOs, hormones in beef, and consumer health.

EU citizens and civil society organizations have feared a watering down of European standards on those fronts. An additional point of contention has revolved around investments. Is an agreement truly beyond reach, then? Recent developments during the Biden Administration point to cooperation in the area of technology and the Internet. But much remains uncertain. In the meanwhile, the EU has proceeded with considerable success to secure trade agreements with much of the rest of the world. Will US influence wane, then? This talk offers insights into these important questions and the future of world trade.

Francesco Duina is Professor of Sociology and European Studies at Bates College.

Once we've received your form, we'll call you to discuss your reading preferences and get you on a delivery schedule.
