Getting the most out of networking
Spokane is a well-networked town. In some circles people say that Spokane is small enough that everyone knows each other. In my mind, it is because Spokanites are highly engaged in meeting and greeting.
If we are all out there talking to each other, how do we make real connections? I’ve been networking for 20 years in the greater Spokane area. As a past member of GSI and Spokane MarCom, and a current member of the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce, and PRSA (one of the best!), I attend lots of meetings!
Most business people that I know are in a similar boat! From my perspective, I have wasted time and money on trying to engage too much, but in the wrong way. In recent years I have found a few tips for effective networking:
- Directly after the event, follow up with the person that you’ve just met
- Be genuine in your interactions – in some cases, you may never work with this person, but they could be a good fit for a colleague
- Employ a heart of service and caring toward others and where they are in the career – they might be selling for one company today and working for you in the future!
Go out and be successful in your networking interactions. See at our PRSAs upcoming events!
