You may be familiar with PVCC's Union Hills Campus, but did you know the Black Mountain campus is a great option for those who live in the Valley's north central and northeast communities. The campus offers traditional general education courses, plus biology and chemistry for Science majors, as well as upper level human anatomy and physiology classes in which students learn with the cadaver lab. In addition, business students are able to take a majority of their courses on site. EMT/Fire Science/Paramedic students can attend their classes as well. Black Mountain's signature, "STEAMtastic and Star Parties provide a great out of classroom learning opportunity not only for our students but for the community and our K-12 students," states Loretta Mondragon, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. Black Mountain will host the 5th Annual STEAMtastic (an AZ SciTech Signature Event) on March 8, celebrating science and technology in our everyday lives. Come view the night sky through the newly-installed Schmidt Cassegrain telescope (pictured above). "We are very excited about using the observatory for both public viewing and undergraduate research of binary stars," says Jenny Weitz, Astronomy Professor.

Student Newspaper Launches New Website
PVCC's student
driven source for news, the
Puma Press, has just launched a new website,
pumapress.org.
Puma Press Faculty Advisor, Denise Estfan says, "We are excited about this website and hope you enjoy reading about our community." The print edition of the
Puma Press will continue to be published once per semester. Students are highly encouraged to join the
Puma Press and each person's perspective is welcome. Estfan reminds students that writing and communication skills are needed in all professions, not just journalism, so their experience with
Puma Press will go far. PVCC offers a Certificate of Completion in
Journalism and New Media Studies. PVCC students have gone on to obtain Bachelor's degrees in Journalism. Congratulations to the
Puma Press staff for launching a great new site!

PVCC Produces World Premiere of New Play
PVCC students have been working with internationally produced playwright, Anne Negri, to produce her newest play, Cave Boys. Dr. Kosnik, Cave Boys Director says, "I appreciate that she has been able to work with PVCC students and they have gotten the chance to see and experience what it is like to work on a new piece of theatre. They have given life to what was before just words on the page, and I am excited to see how audiences react." Cave Boys is set during World War II in Montignac, France. The play, based on a true story, revolves around four teenage boys who discover prehistoric cave paintings in Lascaux, and explores what it means to be a refugee and what it is like to live in a world torn by war. All cast members, as well as the stage manager and hair & makeup designer are current students!

Puma Athletes Return for Alumni Games, Tennis Program Gives Back
Former Pumas returned to campus to participate in alumni events held by Baseball, Softball and Men's Tennis on January 20. Baseball hosted its 5th Annual Alumni Game, while Softball held its Inaugural Alumni Game. Men's Tennis hosted an alumni match the same afternoon. It was great to see such a significant number of Puma Alumni turn out to participate and reconnect with former teammates and coaches.
Puma student-athletes also make time to be of service through a variety of community service projects. For the past six years, Puma Tennis student-athletes and coaches have given of their time to serve at Special Olympics events, like Special Olympics Tennis Fun Day!

Making a Positive Impact in the Classroom
Faculty members, Meggin Kirk and Dr. John Douglass exemplify the high caliber of professors at PVCC. Their names are repeatedly mentioned by alumni who recount the highlights of their education at PVCC. Meggin, who teaches Education classes, says, "I love building relationships with students and see them build relationships with each other." She strives to create an environment that her students can model in their own classrooms when they become teachers. John holds a doctorate in Geography and is an Honors Program Director at PVCC, as well as a geography and honors professor. He has been filmed by National Geographic and the History Channel for his expertise on the formation of the Grand Canyon. He says he loves bringing passion to a topic and twisting a person's understanding in a way they may not have thought before. In honor of Valentine's Day, we are featuring John and Meggin not only because they are great teachers, but because they are also married and have two daughters!

Officer Hunter Keeps Our Campus Safe
PVCC Public Safety Officer, Leroy Hunter knows a thing or two about law enforcement. He retired from the NYC Department of Corrections in 1962 where he managed a block of 350 inmates by himself! He received the Department of Corrections Medal of Honor for his bravery after seven bullets tore through his clothes during a drug crew altercation. He moved to Phoenix in the 80s and worked for the Sheriff's Detention Department for several years. He even delivered two babies in his line of duty, one of which was named after him. He began his career at PVCC in the early 1990s and retired from his full-time position in 2010. He enjoys his job so much that he continues to work part-time. At 79 years young, Leroy continues to foot patrol the campus. He says, "for me, it's not work."

Miguelina Meireles, PVCC Alumna
Miguelina Meireles, a single, working mother of two wanted to exemplify her passion for education and personal development and be a positive example for her daughters. Upon completing her GED, Miguelina decided to achieve her higher education dreams at PVCC. PVCC taught Miguelina the importance of community and the value each interaction brings to a student's sense of belonging. While there were many employees that guided and inspired her from counseling to administration, the Honors Program team, led by Dr. John Douglass, Professors Paul Golisch and Meggin Kirk, were the catalysts for her growth and achievements.
