What's Happening at SJE
This Week
First Sunday of Advent
December 1/2, 2018

We have arrived at the great season of Advent, a season to prepare with awe and wonder for the Feast of the Incarnation of Jesus; born to us as Savior and Brother. It is a season to prepare for His return at the end of time.

It is also a moment to remind ourselves that our individual judgment day is coming, too, when we will be called to give an account for all that God has given to us during our lifetimes. In other words, Advent is a steward’s season!

Our readings for the first week of Advent waste no time in calling our urgent attention to these themes of reflection and preparation. They seem to shout, “Wake up! Get ready!” and offer us some practical advice as we enter into this season.

The Gospel from Luke warns, “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life.” How easy it is to lose focus on our Lord either by too much indulgence in our lives or by too much worry about our lives. To fall prey to either extreme is easy. To avoid these traps, we are told to “be vigilant” and “pray for strength to sustain us.”

During Advent, we Christian stewards must ask ourselves some hard questions. Am I staying faithful to my prayer life? Am I using my energy and skills to serve others? Am I overly concerned about material gain? Am I relying on my “stuff” or my investments as my source of comfort or security? Am I living for the moment or for the coming of the Lord?

Get ready, Christian stewards! He’s coming! Let us prepare with awe and wonder.
First Saturday Confession

Just a reminder that this Saturday, December 1, is the First Saturday of the month. In addition to reconciliation on Saturday morning after the 8:00 a.m. Mass, Confession will be available at 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the church. Reconciliation is a great way to keep ourselves firmly united with God, as well as an opportunity to receive grace, to turn from sin, and believe ever more deeply in God's generous Mercy.
Just a reminder that if you purchased the Rejoice! Advent Meditations with Mary journal, you can pick them up after the Masses this weekend in the Church Hall. You will also have an opportunity to view a 30-minute introductory video.
SCRIP Schedule

Through the weekend of December 22/23, Scrip will be sold every weekend for your holiday shopping needs. As always, SCRIP is available in the Parish Office during regular business hours.
This program allows .5% of your regular shopping on Amazon to be donated to St. John the Evangelist. If you purchase Scrip, St. John's receives an additional 2.25%. That's 2.75% of your purchases to St. John's if you are already shopping Amazon.

In the Coming Weeks
The Giving Tree
November 17 - December 9.

Each year, St. John the Evangelist’s Confirmation Class collects items for the needy of our area.

The Giving Tree is our way of reaching out to those less fortunate. On our Christmas tree in the front of the church are envelopes to be taken by parishioners, gifts purchased and returned UNWRAPPED. The Confirmation Class will sort them and then distribute the items collected to the following agencies: House of Peace, Hope House, Sojourner Family Peace Center and Stork’s Nest. All instructions will be included in the envelope you select.

Let us share our joy and love of God with others during this Christmas season!
The newsletter is published on Wednesdays. Articles for each week's publication are due on Mondays at noon.

To submit articles e-mail to: newsletter@stjohns-grfd.org
