Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 2/3, 2019

How do I know if the Time, Talent and Treasure I offer God in grateful return is “enough?” What is the measure?

St. Paul tells us in the Second Reading on Sunday, the “measure” is the love that we put into each of these aspects of our lives. “If I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own and hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.” God is not after a particular number. What He wants us to give over to Him are our very selves.

Real love is not a sentiment. Real love manifests in living a virtuous life. We read later in St. Paul’s letter that real love takes strength: it is patient, kind, humble, other-centered, truth-seeking and long-suffering. Love is the heroic giving of oneself even when it is uncomfortable; especially then. Love looks like Jesus. It lives like Jesus.

Sometimes living like Jesus is difficult. We see this in the Gospel Reading on Sunday where we find Jesus in action, preaching in the synagogue in His hometown. He speaks truth to the people He loves, the ones He grew up with and shared His early days with. How do they respond? They are filled with fury and run Him out of town, intent on throwing Him from a cliff! Yet Jesus is undeterred. He passes right through them and presses forward with the mission His Father has entrusted to Him.
First Saturday Confession

Just a reminder that Saturday, February 2, is the First Saturday of the month. In addition to Reconciliation on Saturday morning after the 8:00 A.M. Mass, Confession will be available at 3:30 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. in the church. Reconciliation is a great way to keep ourselves firmly united with God, as well as an opportunity to receive grace, to turn from sin, and believe ever more deeply in God's generous Mercy.

WATCH FOR UNSAFE EMAIL
A Safety Message from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee

Be alert for suspicious email and text messages!

We have received several reports from parishes and schools about getting an unusual email that appears to come from their pastor. Most questioned the messages because it was not Father’s regular email address and the message seemed suspicious. Well done! Unfortunately, others fell victim to this fraud and lost hundreds of dollars.

This particular phishing scam first appeared about one year ago and was sent to parishes across the country. The body of the message usually indicates that the pastor “needs your help” and directs the reader to contact him right away. The next message then asks you to purchase iTunes cards for someone he is trying to help.

The scammers are even personalizing each message with the recipient’s name so it appears as legitimate as possible.

Some common red flags are:
  • The email address is different from the person’s typical address
  • Subject lines that do not match the content of the message.
  • Bad grammar or illogical text.
Scrip Weekends
