PRAYER

Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. AMEN.

The Reverend Andrew J. Sherman will be the preacher on Sunday at the 10 AM service. The Gospel reading is LUKE 16:1-13

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

DEFENDER OF THE FAITH

As we all mourn the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, may we remember and honor her incredible life, one dedicated to a lifetime of dutiful service to her people and as Defender of the Faith and Supreme Governor of The Church of England.

Throughout the history of our tradition, the British Monarch has been the symbolic head of The Church of England dating to the time of His Majesty King Henry VIII when he separated the English Church from Rome and established The Church of England, proclaiming himself and every future monarch to be Supreme Governor and Defender of the Faith. The Church of England later spawned the Worldwide Anglican Communion through the expansion of the Church of England throughout the British colonial territories which, to a large extent, make up the present-day Commonwealth of Nations. The American Episcopal Church of the United States is deeply rooted in The Church of England as it was first established in Jamestown, Virginia in 1607.

Her Majesty The Queen took her roles as Defender of the Faith and Supreme Governor very seriously. She was an anointed monarch and, for her, this meant she shared a sacred trust between herself and God. She was a devout Christian woman with an immense faith that resonated throughout her reign and deeply influenced her sense of duty to her people and to God.

The Christmas Broadcasts, first introduced by her grandfather, King George V in 1934, was a hallmark of her time on the throne, and she used these messages to firmly proclaim her faith, inspiring everyone to live by Christ’s own example. She stated in her 2002 Christmas Broadcast "Our modern world places such heavy demands on our time and attention that the need to remember our responsibilities to others is greater than ever." "Each day is a new beginning, I know that the only way to live my life is to try to do what is right, to take the long view, to give of my best in all that the day brings, and to put my trust in God."

She championed inclusiveness as she proclaimed often that we are all part of a “larger family” and in 2004 said, "Everyone is our neighbour, no matter what race, creed or colour."  She always endeavored to teach us all to be more tolerant of our fellow man and to love everyone, no matter what. "For me, the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, whose birth we celebrate today, is an inspiration and an anchor in my life. A role model of reconciliation and forgiveness, he stretched out his hands in love, acceptance, and healing. Christ's example has taught me to seek to respect and value all people, of whatever faith or none." (Christmas, 2014) Queen Elizabeth II encouraged us all to love one another and live through Christ’s love as she said in her 2015 Christmas message, “Despite being displaced and persecuted throughout his short life, Christ's unchanging message was not one of revenge or violence but simply that we should love one another."

Although The Queen was one of the most recognizable figures in the world, she was a person of great humility and her sense of duty to others was deeply rooted in Christ. "This is the time of year when we remember that God sent his only son 'to serve, not to be served'. He restored love and service to the centre of our lives in the person of Jesus Christ. It is my prayer this Christmas Day that his example and teaching will continue to bring people together to give the best of themselves in the service of others. The carol, In The Bleak Midwinter, ends by asking a question of all of us who know the Christmas story, of how God gave himself to us in humble service: 'What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; if I were a wise man, I would do my part'. The carol gives the answer: 'Yet what I can I give him – give my heart'. (Christmas message, 2012)

As we remember The Queen’s extraordinary life this week, let us strive to honor her memory by loving and caring for one another as Christ would have us do. May Her Majesty rest in peace and may God grant to the King his richest blessings as he inherits this great responsibility of caring for and nurturing The Church of England and the wider Anglican Communion of which we are all a part.

WISDOM SCHOOL WITH FATHER BEN

THE NEW MAN: AN INTERPRETATION OF SOME PARABLES AND MIRACLES OF CHRIST

Began: Wednesday, September 14

Day/Time: Wednesday Evenings at 6:00 PM

Location: Zoom (link below)

Resource: The New Man: An Interpretation of Some Parables and Miracles of Christ can be purchased by clicking here

"All sacred writings contain an inner and outer meaning. Behind the literal words lies another range of meaning, another form of knowledge. And in the Gospels, the parable is used in a similar way. [...] The Gospels speak mainly of a possible inner revolution called 're-birth.'"

- Maurice Nicoll

This quote is taken from the section The Language of Parables from The New Man: An Interpretation of Some Parables and Miracles of Christ, by Maurice Nicoll, which will be the focus of our 10-week study this fall. Dr. Maurice Nicoll was a psychologist born in 1884 who wrote extensive psychological commentaries on the teachings of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky. His aim, he claims, is the following:

"The intention is to indicate that all teaching such as that contained in the Gospels and many other older and newer teachings, in the short period of known history, is about transcending the violence which characterizes mankind's present level of being."

It is with this intention, living Christianity from the inside-out, that we must take into the readings of the parables in order to see both the seeds and the fruit they contain.

We'll be entering into the language of the parables, the ideas of Wisdom, prayer, temptation, miracles, and righteousness in the Gospels, along with the Sermon on the Mount, faith, and what the kingdom of heaven might look like. And a section on Judas Iscariot is thrown in for good measure. I'll also be sending you selected shorter readings from the following books as they swim together: Eye of the Heart, The Cloud of Unknowing, The Reality of Being, and poetry.

This 10-week Circle begins on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at 6:00 pm ET. You can purchase The New Man: An Interpretation of Some Parables and Miracles of Christ here

This will be an online group. All are welcome to connect. Once you register, you’ll be sent the link via Zoom. I look forward to having these parables open us up as we engage in teaching and spiritual practice.

Registration for parishioners: The course fee has been waived for members of St. Gregory's but donations are always welcomed. To register and receive the course zoom link, please click here to email Fr. Ben

Registration for nonmembers: The tuition for this 10-week course is $300 for nonmembers. Please click here to register or click here to email Fr. Ben to inquire about becoming a member of St. Gregory's.

ACOLYTE TRAINING

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2

Acolytes are part of a very old tradition that dates back to the Third Century. Since the year 250 A.D acolytes have been people who served at the altar of God. The word “acolyte” itself comes from the Greek word “akolouthos” meaning “a follower” or “one who helps”. After the 10 am liturgy on Sunday 10/02 we will have a basic refresher for anyone who is an acolyte or would like to join this important ministry at St. Gregory's. Anyone 8 years older is able to participate. It has been a tradition at St. Gregory's for families to participate in the service together on a Sunday. I look forward to seeing you on the 2nd. You may call or email me if you have any questions. MUSIC

A MESSAGE FROM TIM

This Sunday’s 10 AM Music will feature one of Gabriel Fauré’s most beloved works. The Cantique de Jean Racine, composed by Fauré at the age of 19, won first place prize in the École Niedermeyer de Paris Competition in 1865 and utilizes a paraphrase by the 17th-century French playwright Jean Racine of the Latin text Verbe, égal au Très-Haut, taken from the Latin hymn Consors paterni luminis, a hymn from the breviary for matins. As we witness a baptism in Christ, may we meditate on its second verse Pour on us the fire of your powerful grace, so that all hell flees at the sound of your voice. Dispel the sleep of a languishing soul, who lives forgetful of your laws.

The Communion AnthemThou Wilt Keep Him in Perfect Peace, by Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876) was sung this past week at St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh as the coffin of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was carried into the Nave for her Scottish service of thanksgiving. It will be sung this Sunday to honor her life, which she led in honor, service, and unwavering devotion to her people and to the Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion as Defender of the Faith.  Wesley utilized verses from Isaiah 26, Psalm 139, John 1, Psalm 119, and The Lord’s Prayer as the basis for the text for this most beautiful anthem which is a fitting memorial to Her Late Majesty The Queen.

Wesley was an English organist and composer who was the son of composer Samuel Wesley and the grandson of Charles Wesley. His father gave him his middle name of Sebastian out of his love and admiration for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.  S. S. Wesley held positions at Hereford Cathedral, Exeter Cathedral, Winchester Cathedral, and Gloucester Cathedral and was appointed Professor of Organ at The Royal Academy of Music in 1850. One of Great Britain’s leading musical figures of the 19th century, he composed exclusively for the Church of England. While working with the Willis Organ Company on the installation of the new organ in Winchester Cathedral, their collaboration resulted in the redesign of the organ pedalboard giving it the present-day concave design.

Our first Choral Evensong of the season will be September 25! Led by the Choir of St. Gregory’s, Choral Evensong is one of the most beautiful services of the Anglican tradition with a history dating back centuries inspiring countless composers to set portions of its liturgy to music which you will ONLY hear at Choral Evensong.

And on October 30, a very special Choral Evensong will be offered in memory of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II featuring music composed for various Royal occasions including her Coronation.

Choral highlights will include “I Was Glad" by Hubert Parry; "O Taste and See” by R. V. Williams.

Plan now to attend this monumental Choral Evensong as we come together to honor and remember the extraordinary life of Her Late Majesty The Queen. Come experience the wonder and beauty that only Choral Evensong can deliver.

I’ll see you in church and online!

A MESSAGE FROM PAUL

As many of you know, I have the privilege of leading online Morning Prayer on Thursdays from St Mary's Anglican Church in Litton Cheney in England. With effect from this coming Thursday and for the next three weeks, Father Andrew has given his permission for me to lead Morning Prayer from the Anglican Book of Common Prayer. The service is very similar to that which is prescribed for the Episcopal Church, but with a few small differences. This will be reviewed in three weeks' time and comments and thoughts will be most welcome.

CLASSES & FORMATION

GOSPEL OF THOMAS CIRCLES WITH FATHER BEN

Days/Times: Wednesday Mornings at 10 AM & Sunday Mornings at 9:10 AM

Location: Zoom (link below)

Resource: The Gospel of Thomas. The translations by LeloupBaumanor Pagles are recommended.

Join our Gospel of Thomas Circle on Wednesdays at 10 am and Sundays at 9:10 am. The Gospel of Thomas was part of the Nag Hammadi find in the desert of Egypt in 1945 at the end of World War II which completely changed the landscape of Christianity. It is 114 sayings attributed to Jesus that are like Buddhist koans - these compact little hand grenades for the mind that force us into heart-centered awareness and intuitive knowing. Join us every Sunday at 9 am where we'll take this mystical leap into what many historians believe is most likely the oldest Gospel of Jesus that we have. I recommend these three translations by LeloupBauman, or Pagles. Having a diversity of translations will only enrich our discussion. The Circle will be picking up with Logion 76.

"The Kingdom of the Father is like a merchant who had a load of goods to sell. Then he saw a pearl. The merchant was wise and sold his goods to buy the pearl. You too should pursue that treasure which is everlasting, there where moths never go nor worms devour."

Here's to pursuing treasures that are everlasting. The pearl of inner revolution. It's wonderful to be back with you.

SUBJECT TO CHANGE

Schedules listed here may be subject to change.

As we roll into summer, the rhythms of our schedule may change from time to time as our team members enter into occasional respite time with their loved ones. Please stay tuned for the most up-to-date information. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Grace for all!
MASKS ARE RECOMMENDED

Our Covid Advisory Committee, with the consent of our Vestry, has approved moving to a “masks recommended” policy for our worship and for all gatherings on our campus.

Throughout the pandemic, we have followed the guidelines established by the diocese, the insights of the CDC and other health officials, and Jesus’ commandment to love and care for each other. As we’ve continued our prayers, received new directives from the diocese, and taken note of the recently revised CDC guidelines, we have determined this is the proper time to loosen our current restrictions.

In addition, other changes include:

• Restoring open seating in the main nave section. For the time being, we will still offer an option for social distancing in St. Mary’s Chapel and the “Family Section” located in the transept on the south side of the main altar. In these sections, every other pew will be designated for seating.

• Returning to receiving Holy Communion and the chalice at the altar. CLICK HERE to view Fr. Andrew's video update which includes an overview of Holy Week and Easter as well as more information on taking the chalice at the altar.

• We have removed cushions around the altar rail to encourage safe distancing at the altar.

If you are feeling unwell or are out of the area, we invite you to view our online services on our Facebook page by clicking here. We thank you for your patience, understanding, and cooperation at this time.
WELCOME HOME

At St. Gregory's, everyone is welcome and loved. If you are new to the church, please contact us. We are here for you and so very glad you choose to be a part of the St. Gregory's family.
The last few years have taken a toll on so many of us. Pandemics, shootings, division, inflation - there is no shortage of stress in our society. St. Gregory's is here to support you and those in need with Christian care during tough times.
Stephen Ministry
St. Gregory's Stephen Ministry is the one-to-one lay caring ministry of St. Gregory’s. Stephen Ministers are congregation members trained by Stephen Leaders to offer high-quality, one-to-one Christian care and compassionate listening to people going through tough times. If you find yourself struggling through a difficult time in life—experiencing grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, or some other life crisis, our Stephen Ministry is here to care for you in this difficult season. Stephen Ministers typically provide care to one person at a time, meeting with that person once a week for about an hour. Twice a month, Stephen Ministers gather with their Stephen Leaders for supervision and continuing education.

If you are in need of care or are interested in learning more about St. Gregory's Stephen Ministry, please email the church office at office@st-gregorys.com or call us at 561-395-8285 and we will ask a Stephen Leader to contact you. All conversations are completely confidential. Confidentiality is a holy part of Stephen Ministry.
