How Firm A Foundation
MAKING A DIFFERENCE IMPACT IN MADAGASCAR
Today we commission Betsy Wenzel and Walter Jones who will be traveling to the Diocese of Toliara in Madagascar, where Bishop Todd McGregor and his wife, the Rev. Patsy McGregor, serve. Betsy and Walter will represent St. Gregory's at the ordination of three deacons and one priest who have been supported in their education by St. Gregory's Von Kreuter Seminary Scholarship Fund. This fund was started by a planned gift by Hilda Von Kreuter, over twenty years ago. Her legacy still makes a difference supporting people in their calling to serve God's people as priests and deacons in the Episcopal Church and the wider Anglican Communion. We are particularly excited because the Rev. Nolavy Remamy, one of the ordinands, will become the first female malagasy to serve as a priest in the Anglican Church.
SOUTH FLORIDA HAITI PROJECT UPDATE GRANT RECEIVED FROM BETHESDA BY THE SEA EPISCOPAL CHURCH
The South Florida Haiti Project just received the great news that we have received a $15,000 grant from Bethesda by the Sea Episcopal Church for an economic development project to start a chicken coop in Bondeau. We are partnering with Food for the Poor on this initiative. Based on their experience with similar projects in other parts in Haiti, we believe this will potentially create a regular source of income for Bon Samaritan Church and the Bondeau community. We celebrate the generosity of Bethesda by the Sea Episcopal Church. We hope continued prayers for impact, and lives changed in the Bondeau community.

Holy Provisions is seeking donations of refrigerators and freezers in good condition or funding to purchase these for churches and ministries using their services. Holy Provisions is a 100% volunteer-run program that provides over 200,000 pounds of free food per year to over 50 churches and ministries (including St. Gregory’s) from Homestead to Stuart. This helps feed over 3000 senior citizens and less fortunate people regularly. Many of our small organizations and churches lack adequate storage to accept as much free fresh produce and frozen meat as they need.

FROM THE PARISH NURSE
SMOKING AND YOUR HEALTH THE TRUE COSTS OF SMOKING

Smoking may be hazardous to your health and your finances. At the age of 15, I started to smoke because all the older girls who worked in the nursing home smoked. STUPID move on my part. Nicotine is addictive and yes, I became addicted. In 1958 I could buy a pack of cigarettes for $.40 cents. Today a pack cost $6.28, which means a pack a day habit sets you back $188/month or $2,292 per year. Ten years of smoking comes with a $22,920.00 price tag.

At age 50 the lightbulb went off in my brain. Despite the fact I had taken care of people with COPD on O2; visualized the black lung of an addictive smoker; cared for people with tracheostomies; I had continued to smoke. The lightbulb went off and I finally saw the disgruntled faces of patients who did not like the smell of smoke. How could I do this to people, especially sick people. AND so, after several attempts to quit I did it!
