Mazel Tov to our November Congregants of the Month!
|
Moshe and Marci Adler moved to Palm Beach County in August 1981 and joined Temple Beth El the following month.
They met at the University of Florida Hillel, the Shabbat before their freshman year began in 1971m and married in 1973. Both were active on Hillel's student board. From the start, Moshe was a leader in davening and Torah reading. During their second year, Marci chaired Hillel's Sunday brunch. For two and a half years, Moshe and Marci regularly prepared all the onegs and kiddushes, and instituted a weekly Shabbat dinner program for UF students, either finding volunteers or cooking the meal themselves every Friday when school was in session.
As graduate students in 1975, they joined B'nai Israel, the conservative synagogue in Gainesville, and remained members until 1981. They continued to be active in Hillel, Marci serving several years on its community board. The brits of their sons, Michael and Matthew, took place in the UF Hillel lounge in 1978 and 1980. (Their daughter Malka was named during a special minyan held in Temple Beth El's Senter Hall in 1984.)
In 1981, Moshe completed his pediatric residency and joined The Children's Clinic in Lake Worth. The group merged into Pediatric Associates in 2000, and Moshe now is the lead physician in the group's Palm Beach Gardens office. Marci, a graduate of UF's law school, worked part-time for small law firms while the children were young, then served as a staff attorney at the State of Florida's Fourth District Court of Appeal for over twenty-three years before her recent retirement.
Moshe and Marci are graduates of the Jewish Federation's 1982-83 Young Leadership Program, following which they served on several Federation committees. Moshe also served many years on the board of the Jewish Community Day School (JCDS) (n/k/a the Meyer Academy), including as treasurer, while Marci was active with Women's American ORT.
Moshe became treasurer of the temple in 1983, programming the temple's first membership database and yahrzeit program. He has served on the temple's Board most of the time since then, recently as a vice president, and has served on many committees. He has conducted services, read Torah, blown shofar, and led the grace after meals as needed. In the late 1990s, he began to be active in the Men's Club, serving as its treasurer and president. He was honored as its Man of the Year in 2008 and received is Kavod award in 2005 and 2010. He attends the morning minyan whenever he has a weekday or Sunday off. Marci chaired Sisterhood's Education Day in the 1980s and again in the1990s, and has regularly participated in Sisterhood Shabbat, often reading a Haftorah or a Torah portion. On retiring, she became more involved in Sisterhood and now serves as a co-president. Moshe and Marci are proud to have been the honorees of Temple Beth El's 2014 dinner dance.
Michael, Matthew, and Malka-graduates of the JCC pre-school, the JCDS, and the Judaica Institute-each celebrated a bar or bat mitzvah at Temple Beth El and their parties took place in Senter Hall. Moshe's father, Rev. Mordechai Adler, also celebrated his second bar mitzvah, at age 83, at Temple Beth El. Senter Hall was the setting of a private party in 2008 celebrating the out-of-state wedding of Matthew to Melinda Goodman, and one in 2011, celebrating the 60th anniversary of Marci's parents, Lou and Sandra Silbermann. Matt and Melinda, who have joined a conservative synagogue in Baltimore, MD, are now the parents of Moshe and Marci's grandchildren: Joshua, age 5, and Zachary, age 3.
MAZEL TOV Moshe & Marci!

Question: Why do we read 1/3 of the Torah every year?
Answer: Most Conservative congregations (as well as others) have adopted a triennial cycle of reading the Torah in the last 40 - 50 years. This means that the traditional weekly Torah portions are divided into thirds and 1/3 of the parasha is read during the appropriate week of the calendar.
Apparently, this practice was very widespread in Palestine, whereas in Babylonia the custom was to read the entire parasha. We have several sources confirming this. However, by the time of Maimonides (12th cent.) most synagogues read the entire portion each week.
The main reason many congregations have returned in modern times to this ancient tradition is to make Shabbat Service shorter and to allow the Rabbi give a Sermon or Dvar Torah.
This is a Weekly Column where Rabbi Feldman will answer any question you might have relating to Judaism. Please email your questions to office@bethelwpb.com

Men's Club Man of the Year & Youth of the Year
|
|
Folks, we need your help!
The Men's Club Man of the Year celebration is on Sunday, November 20. The deadline for submitting ads and reservations for lunch is November 1, so we need your responses by Oct 28 at the very latest. However, due to the Holidays and Hurricane Matthew, we have not sent out the invitations yet. They will go out on Wednesday of this week, right after the first 2 days of Sukkot, but that's really not much time to respond.
We want a nice crowd to show our love and respect for our honorees - Carl Willner and Martin Blanca. You all know Carl and what a wonderful person he is, despite the horrors he lived through. Martin has been a real asset to youth programming at Beth El, and really deserves this honor.
So, here's what I need you to do. I've attached the invitation to this e-mail. You can print it if you want, but you don't really have to. Just send me an e-mail with the number of people attending and their names, and if you want to place an ad honoring Carl and/or Martin, please tell me the size of the ad and what you want it to say, or attach the ad to your reply e-mail. If you want a business card ad, scan it and include in the e-mail. You can also print the invitation and bring it to the Temple office if you'd rather do that. In either case, we need a check sent/brought to the Temple office made out to Temple Beth El Men's Club, or credit card info filled in on the attached form. Please don't send credit card numbers in e-mail - it's not safe! If you would like to use a credit card that is on file in the Temple office, let me know that, too.
Also, let me know if you want to join us on a bus to North Miami Beach so you don't have to drive all the way yourself. It will be about $15 per person, but you will save on gas and aggravation, and we'll have fun on the bus together!
Details:
Reservations $50 per person, $25 for children under 13 years old.
Bus $15 per person
Ads:
$250 full page
$135 half page
$75 quarter page
$50 business card
$36 name listing
Raffle books are still $10 each, but we're sending you 2 this year, to give you a better chance of winning! You'll be getting those in the mail, so fill out the stubs and send them to the Temple office. PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE THE STAPLE FROM THE STUBS. We need them stapled so that we can account for the number we send in.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and responding promptly. We're really late, and I apologize for that, but we want a lot of people attending to honor Carl and Martin, so please send back your reply as soon as possible to mosheadler@aol.com. Title the subject line "Man of the Year - Youth of the Year" and I'll know to check those e-mails quickly.
Thank you,
Moshe
