Question: What is the connection between Pesach and Elijah the Prophet?
Answer: Our tradition teaches that Elijah attends every single Seder. That is why we have a cup of wine for him on our tables and we open the door for him at the end of the Seder. The main reason he visits us on this special night is connected to the Haftarah we chant on Shabbat Hagadol, immediately before Pesach. The last verse says that before he will announce the arrival of Messianic age, Elijah will make peace in our families. By inviting him to our Seders we demonstrate that we have done our job and achieved Shalom Bait.
This is a Weekly Column in which Rabbi Feldman will answer any question you might have relating to Judaism. Please email your questions to office@bethelwpb.com

Mazel Tov to our April Congregants of the Month!
|
Robert & Faith Krasnow
The Krasnows are fairly new members of Temple Beth El having joined in 2015. Their home is in Bedford, New York, a town in Northern Westchester County that runs along the Connecticut border. It resembles rural New England: hilly, wooded with an abundance of wildlife.
Bob retired from a business he formed thirty years ago designing and manufacturing the toys they used to put in cereal boxes! After retirement, he wrote a memoir of his early life, "Bob's the Name."
He led a $10 million renovation at his temple in Bedford where he chaired the Buildings and Grounds Committee for 13 years. He started his "Comedy Night" event 15 years ago and has brought it to TBE the last two years.
Additionally, Bob started a Discussion Group program up north which has been running for 15 years, uninterrupted, and has established the program here at Beth El. Bob initiated a Speakers Fund with the proceeds from "Comedy Night". He and Faith brought three prominent speakers to Beth El this season, two from Israel and a professor who is an expert on the European Union.
Faith Krasnow, formerly a French teacher and artist, has been practicing psychoanalytic psychotherapy for 33 years. She has been teaching classes on Jewish history at her temple in Bedford as well as at Beth El. A new class is just starting titled "Modern Jewish Intellectual Thought: 16th-20th Century." She has introduced video discussions here, with one more to be held on Sunday, April 23, 10:30 AM titled, "Why the Jews?" with Rabbi Ken Spiro.
Both Faith and Bob attend the Rabbi's class on Wednesday mornings and Faith has been participating in the Cantor's Wednesday 10 AM study group, "Understanding the Prayers." She has sung in liturgical choirs since childhood and has been studying classical voice for many years.
The Krasnows are immensely grateful for the support and affection of the congregation, both received and returned.
MAZEL TOV BOB & FAITH!

"Modern Jewish Intellectual History"
THE CHALLENGE OF SPINOZA
With his Theoretical-Political Treatise, published anonymously in 1670, Spinoza (1632-1677) ends the ideal of the theocratic state which characterized all cultures since time immemorial. From now on every Jewish and Christian thinker will have to answer Spinoza's challenge to religious authority. His ideal is the Protestant state where church and state are separate.
Spinoza argues that personal autonomy and reason are in opposition to communal religious demands. His chief target is Maimonides (1135-1204) who argues, as Saadia ( 882-942) did before him in Baghdad, for the compatibility of faith and reason.
All are welcome to join the discussion and video on Wednesday, April 19, 10:30 AM sharp in the Rapaport Lounge.
Facilitator: Faith Krasnow

Movies
We love movies because they cause us to feel something. They speak to our desires, they allow us to escape and dream, they tell us to remember, they remind us of life. If there were a movie that told your life, what would it be?
What movies spoke to you? And what did they say?
Let's discuss on Thursday, April 20,10:30 AM in the Rapaport Lounge.
