Question:
Does Jewish Law really command us to get drunk on Purim?
Answer:
Judaism commands us to drink alcohol on Purim except for the Jews who have health limitations and recovering alcoholics. Today we must also add to the exception designated drivers. How much we must drink is a matter of debate. Some Rabbis say you actually need to get drunk so you will not distinguish between Mordechai and Haman. Other commentators say that as long as you drink more than usual...you fulfill the mitzvah. Do you know any other religion like ours?!
This is a Weekly Column in which Rabbi Feldman will answer any question you might have relating to Judaism. Please email your questions to office@bethelwpb.com

Message From Cantor Norman Brody
|
Dear Congregants,
As Chazzan of Temple Beth El for these past 30 years, I am grateful for the honor, not only of serving you for all this time, but for the magnificent "Harmonies of the Heart" gala held this past Sunday night in my honor. It can best be described as "awesome, heartwarming and fun!" The hard work and coordination of the committee and the many volunteers is very much appreciated and they created an affair which was most elegant. The music, food, decor and presentations were perfect. The entire room and the evening were filled with LOVE! Sheila enjoyed her birthday and I thank our Temple Beth El family from the bottom of my heart for this wonderful outpouring of affection and appreciation. I will always treasure the congratulatory, beautiful, personal, thoughtful and very touching messages in the tribute journal and the memories of this celebration.
Thank you,
Cantor Norman Brody

Sisterhood Mitzvah Month
March is the annual Sisterhood Mitzvah Month. We are collecting donations for the clients of The Lord's Place. We share their mission of "breaking the cycle of homelessness by providing them with the tools to become productive, self- sufficient members of the community."
The Lord's Place is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization that helps it's clients through innovative programs of rehabilitation and education.
As a Sisterhood, we at Temple Beth El reach out into the larger community by partnering with The Lord's Place to make a difference, Tikun Olum.
Do your spring cleaning NOW.
Starting March 1, bring gently used men's, women's and children's clothes to the Temple lobby. Toilettries, linens, housewares, pens, paper, non-perishables, baby diapers and furniture (if bigger than you can carry, we'll arrange for it to be picked up) will be greatly appreciated by their clients.
Upon request, receipts will be provided.

Mazel Tov to our March Congregants of the Month!

Liz & Alvin Perlman
Liz and Alvin Perlman joined Temple Beth El, after relocating to Palm Beach County from New York City in 1972. Their two daughters, Amy and Jill, were active participants in services at Temple Beth El from their earliest years, and were frequently seen on the bima with Cantor Brody as they chanted prayers on High Holidays and Shabbat, read Torah and the Megillah, and participated as members of Cantor Brody's original children's choir.
Liz and Alvin served as school administrators in Palm Beach County for most of their careers, with Alvin serving as an assistant principal at the elementary and high school levels. Liz was principal of three elementary schools and a middle school, and served as the Director of K-12 Curriculum for Palm Beach County Schools.
During the 1980's and 90's Liz and Alvin volunteered their time in supporting the Meyer Academy (Jewish Community Day School), serving on both the Board of Directors and the education committee. Most recently, Liz has served as the co-chair of the Temple Beth El 2017 Gala, honoring Cantor Norman Brody.
These days the Perlmans spend a great deal of time on the road visiting their grandchildren in New York City and Gainesville, Florida.
The Perlmans are pleased to be part of the Temple Beth El family and look forward to many more years of affiliation

Lecture Series: Tuesday, March 7
|
By 1795 the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, where the Jews arrived and thrived since the 13th century, was no more. Grasped by Russia in the second half of the century, the country was partitioned into three provinces ruled by Russia, Austria and Prussia. Jewish life declined in all aspects, both material and rabbinic.
Having survived the Chemielniki Massacre, the scourge of Sabbatianism and renewed impoverishment and persecution including ghettoization, the Jews of Poland were suffering from every hardship imaginable. Their spirituality was waning and a dichotomy was forming between a mechanical Halacha and the Soul.
As the two began to wander away from each other, it was creating mass alienation which would lead to the extremes of modern assimilation and radical ultra orthodoxy. Into this deteriorating picture along came the unlikely figure of the Baal Shem Tov (Israel ben Eliezer, 1700-1760). A simple, tender-hearted mystic, of rare personal charisma, who worked as a lime-digger in the Carpathian Mountains, the Baal Shem came up with a third dimension by introducing the essence of love, of joy, of soul, of the deep spiritual passion in everything that is Jewish.
A radical innovation, Hasidism departed from obedience to established authority and created a revolution in worship with its spiritual aliveness and emotional intensity. It left us a folk literature, The Chasidic Tale, an instrument of psychological analysis and self-knowledge.
All are welcome to join the discussion of the five concepts of Hasidism illustrated by tales from this charming tradition on Tuesday, March 14, 10:30 sharp in the social hall.
