On the Horizon—Annual Meeting

Annual meeting will take place on January 24, 2027; mark your calendars.

The nominating committee will convene soon to contemplate new Vestry members and officers. We'd especially like to welcome some of our young adult members to join Vestry. NOTE: any parishioner can also nominate by submitting a name with 4 supporting signatures to the nominating committee 3 weeks ahead of the annual meeting. (The nominating committee slate will be available 4 weeks ahead of the annual meeting.) New faces, returning Vestry, we welcome your suggestions!

IRIS (Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services)

Tomorrow, October 23, 2026, IRIS will return to Trinity. It was a sad day, as I understand, when they had to leave because their funding was cut. Well, they've been working hard on grant proposals and they are delighted to reopen their Hartford Office at Trinity. They will be in the first classroom ("The Nursery") and the room across the hall ("Reception"?).

Mtr. Marta

Maintenance Updates

1.) Motion sensor light switch in first floor hallway men's room replaced. Old switch was not shutting off the lights leaving them on constantly.

2.) The rooms IRIS are moving into were emptied and deep cleaned.

3.) The floors in the first floor hallway bathrooms were scrubbed.

4.) The wood floor in the sanctuary was scrubbed using a light degreaser to remove Murphy's Oil Soap. The repeated use of Murphy's Oil Soap was the cause of the wood floors becoming sticky this past summer. A new product, specifically design for wood floors, was applied.

Email Scam & Phishing Attempts

Some Trinity parishioners have recently received scam emails impersonating clergy or staff. If you receive an odd email or text asking for gift cards, urgent help, or personal information, it is almost certainly a scam. Check in with the church office by calling (860) 527-8133 or sending a new email (not a reply) to the trinityhartford.org email address of the person in question.

Click here to read a guide on modern scam techniques, how to spot them, and what to do if you have been targeted, courtesy of St. Matthew's in Sterling, VA.

"Scam emails are not new, but they are getting more convincing. With AI-generated text, more sophisticated spoofing tools, and new tactics like QR code phishing, even careful people can be fooled. Churches, nonprofits, and faith-based communities are often targeted because scammers assume our members are kind, generous, and willing to help quickly."

Upcoming Events

Upcoming After-Church Forums in the Library

Sunday, Oct. 25: Bible Study

Led by the Rev. George Chien

Holy Eucharist for the Vigil of All Saints' Day

On Saturday, October 31 at 5:00pm, we will offer a Eucharist in the Chapel for the eve of All Saints' Day. "All Hallows" is another way to say "All Saints", which makes this "All Hallows' Eve" - or Halloween! Join us to celebrate our place in the great cloud of witnesses.

No spooks or scares will be offered in the liturgy, but costumes are optional.

And one was a doctor, and one was a queen,

and one was a shepherdess on the green;

they were all of them saints of God, and I mean,

God helping, to be one too.

Fire Escape Work

On (or about) November 2, prepare for a small bit of external chaos as our fire escapes will receive some loving attention. Their bolts will be brought back up to code, and they'll be scraped and painted to ensure their longevity against rust.

Eucharistic Visitor Training from ECCT

Date: November 7, 2026

Time: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Venue: ECCT - The Commons

Location: 290 Pratt St, Meriden

Please Register online

Eucharistic Visitors play a pivotal role in the church community, serving as a bridge between the Church and the World, serving those who are shut-in, sick, or unable to be inside the church to worship. We hope to inspire and guide attendees by introducing the many aspects of this sacramental ministry as well as offering a guide, using a standardized order of service for taking the Church (Body of Christ) to such members. We will also discuss some of the difficult and/or unusual challenges as well as the joys the Eucharistic Visitor encounters while encircled with the busyness and speed bumps that encroach on our lives today.

Bishop's Visitation!

On November 15, 2026, Bishop Jeff Mello will join us at Trinity Church for our 10AM Eucharist. He will preside and preach. There will be a Parish Forum Q&A afterwards, and following that, Bishop Jeff will meet with the Vestry in the library.

As a preview of your soon-to-arrive Stewardship Letter, this will also be “ingathering” Sunday, when we will offer our pledge cards in addition to our usual offering. For those (like me!) who haven’t been here before for this, at the offertory, instead of the plate being passed, everyone brings their offering and pledge up to the front. It strikes me as a touching reiteration of our rededication Sunday. We rededicate our resources! (And of course, if you have any difficulties, the ushers will happily bring up your offering.)

It’s not a tradition I’ve witnessed before, but when I mentioned it to Bishop Jeff, it turns out it is a tradition his prior church in Brookline, MA did, so he was quite enthusiastic.

Book Group Meeting

Mink River by Brian Doyle is the novel to be discussed at Trinity Book Group's next gathering, on Friday, Nov. 13th, 7:00-8:30. It's a whimsically-related tale of a town on the coast of Oregon, home to a diverse population including Native Americans and Irish immigrants, young and old.

Jon Reik will host the meeting at his home in Farmington. Please let him know if you plan to attend. (text/call 860-463-1267). Everyone is welcome to attend Trinity Book Group meetings, whether once or regularly, as your interest and schedule allows!

Choir Concerts

Here are the details and info about our upcoming concerts. Please get your calendars out and defend these dates at all costs 😉!

From Shadow to Light: A Call for Peace

Our program is a collaboration of choirs from Trinity Episcopal Church, The Choir School of Hartford, Old St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church of Bloomfield - Music Director Dr. Kelly Whitesell Powers, Wapping Community Church, South Windsor - Music Director Maria Centola, and UConn Shadow Puppetry!

We will perform Mendelssohn’s sacred cantata “Hear My Prayer” and selections from Karl Jenkins’s “The Peacemakers”, incorporating words of peace from Martin Luther King Jr., Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, St. Francis of Assisi, and others notable world figures.

The choirs will sing alongside a string quartet, world flutes, percussion, and electric bass. We will have choristers reading inspirational poems and quotes about peace. UConn Puppetry will also create original shadow puppetry especially for these performances!

The schedule:

Thursday, November 19, 7:00 - 9:00 PM:
Dress rehearsal at Trinity Episcopal Church

Saturday, November 21, 6:00 PM:
Concert at Trinity Episcopal Church

Sunday, November 22, 4:00 PM:
Concert at Wapping Community Church

Sunday, January 17, 10:00 AM:
Service at Old St. Andrew’s Church in Bloomfield (1:00 p.m. alternate time, TBD)

Musically,

Markus

Upcoming Grounds Work Days

The next grounds work day is scheduled for Saturday November 21, in the morning starting at 9 am. Another work day is planned Saturday, December 5th. Please consider lending your support on one or both of these dates to get the grounds ready for winter.

Please contact Peter Green (860-922-1830) if you need further information.
Thank you!

Ongoing Activities

Worship Team

How do we plan each week’s liturgy? Come join the worship team and find out! Send an email to Mtr. Marta (mrivera@trinityhartford.org) if you are interested in helping out. (Also, if you already do help out and have not received email from me, do email and let me know. I’m trying to compile from a bunch of different lists.)

Hi Everyone!

There is so much to look forward to in the upcoming season, and the kickoff is coming soon!

We are currently in open enrollment for new choristers at the Choir School of Hartford. We would love your help spreading the word!

Here is the Choir School of Hartford Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/choirschoolofhartford/

Please take a moment to:

1.          Like the page.

2.          Follow the page, if you don’t already.

3.          Most importantly, share the September open enrollment post on your own Facebook page.

Sharing the post helps expand its visibility beyond our immediate Trinity community and puts the Choir School in front of your friends, family, and contacts. This simple step can help us reach more families and grow the music ministry at Trinity.

Thank you for helping spread the word and for supporting the Choir School!

Musically,

Markus

Women Together: Reading Group

Women Together: a group that gathers weekly to explore our Christian faith and practice through book discussion, prayer and fellowship. We will meet on Tuesdays from 2:00 to 3:15pm in the reception room at St. John’s (679 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford, CT). We also send out a Zoom link during bad weather in the winter.

On Tuesday October 20, 2026 we will begin a new book " The Wisdom Jesus: Transforming Heart and Mind – A New Perspective on Christ and his Message” by Cynthia Bourgeault.

“The Wisdom Jesus provides a new perspective on Christ and an expansive interpretation of His message. Cynthia Bourgeault creates a masterful guide to Jesus's vision and the traditional contemplative practices you can use to experience the heart of his teachings for yourself.”

We will read one section a week usually 20-30 pages long. Don’t worry if you haven’t received your book yet, just read what you can and join us for discussion.

The books we choose are usually available at libraries booksellers. WT has been attended by women from St. John’s, Trinity Asylum Hill, Trinity Wethersfield and St. Monica’s.

Please contact Cathy Rowe if you would like additional information at crowedy@yahoo.com.

Confirmation, Reaffirmation, Reception

If you are interested in confirmation, in being received into the Episcopal Church from another denomination, or reaffirming your committment to the church, we will be gathering a group together for that purpose. Email mrivera@trinityhartford.org with your interest, and your availability to meet in person or online.

A Notice from the Prayer Team

At Trinity Church we believe in the power of prayer.

  • Your written prayer requests are welcome. There are prayer jars on tables at both entrances in which you are invited to place prayer requests. You may also call or email the church office to make a prayer request. During the week, written requests will be collected and prayed over privately. At your discretion, such requests can be placed in the Sunday service leaflet.
  • Prayer requests will be published for four weeks, then deleted unless you choose to renew them by contacting the Parish Administrator.
  • Intercessors are stationed in the south (lectern side) aisle of the Nave during communion each Sunday. Please approach them if you desire a moment of personal prayer. All personal prayers will remain confidential.

Prayer List

Should you like a name added to the Prayer List, please contact the office at office at Trinityhartford.org or 860-527-8133 ext. 204.

Please note that unless the office is otherwise notified, the name will be on the list for 4 weeks and then removed. If a name is taken off the list in error, we are happy to add it back in.
