News from the Diocese
| | During this time at Trinity we will be blessed to welcome visiting priests as presiders and preachers for our Sunday services. In order for you to get to know a bit about them before they arrive on Sunday, please take the time to read their biographies. | | |
Please Welcome The Rev. Horace Johnson, Presider
The Rev. Horace S. Johnson, MBA, is a retired Associate Rector from Trinity Church of Hartford and the former Business Manager of Connecticut’s Community College System. Born in Jamaica, West Indies, the eldest of nine children and the son of a Pentecostal minister, Rev. Johnson learned that God is good all the time; all the time, God is good from a very early age. Pastor Johnson called on his son daily to lead morning devotions with his brothers and sisters. This practice planted the seeds of Rev. Johnson’s call to ministry.
After his children became adults, Rev. Johnson answered the lingering call to ministry. He entered the seminary at Berkeley Divinity School at Yale and was ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut by the Rt. Rev. Andrew Smith on December 15, 2001. Subsequently, having spent five years in full-time ministry at Trinity Episcopal Church as the Associate Rector, Rev. Johnson retired to Florida. At St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Palm Beach Coast, Florida he was a volunteer Assisting Priest for 14 years. In the rear of the global pandemic, Rev. Johnson returned to Connecticut in 2021 and rejoined Trinity as his home church. When he’s not filling in as a supply priest, Rev. Johnson enjoys traveling and spending time with his grandchildren - Davis and Avery, completing a daily crossword puzzle and playing weekly rounds of golf.

He previously pastored several United Methodist congregations in upstate New York and Connecticut. An amateur photographer and graphic artist, George enjoys exploring the city, its arts and architecture, and meeting its people. A graduate of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL, he and his husband Julio Flores reside in Frog Hollow, Hartford in a 150-year-old Victorian.

🎉 Youth Sunday Potluck Celebration
As Trinity walks through this time of transition, opportunities to come together in love and community are more important than ever.
This potluck is a time to reconnect, uplift one another and remind ourselves of the strength we share as a church family.
Join us immediately following the 10 AM service for a special
Potluck Celebration in honor of Youth Sunday on June 8th.!
Let’s come together to:
✨ Celebrate our amazing young people
🍲 Share delicious food
🤝 Enjoy fellowship with our Trinity family
🎲 Have fun playing games for all ages
Bring a dish to share, your appetite, and your game face!
Mark your calendars and start thinking about what you’d like to bring to the table -
food and fun alike!
Note - what to bring:
To help things go smoothly, we ask that potluck dishes be easy to serve and either enjoyed at room temperature or kept warm in a crockpot.
Since we won’t have access to an oven or stovetop, please avoid anything that needs to be reheated on-site.
Think finger foods, salads, sandwiches, pasta dishes, slow cooker favorites, or desserts that hold up well without extra fuss.
Thanks for helping us keep it simple and delicious!
Let’s make this a joyful, delicious, and memorable time together.
We can’t wait to see you there!

COFFEE HOUR:
THANK YOU!
Even in this time of transition, Trinity Church continues to look and feel like it always has. Our worship is reliably beautiful, we enjoy consistently lovely music, the sermons are thoughtful and provoke us to grow in our faith, we continue to greet one another with great joy during the passing of the peace, and our adult forums are informative. Also very importantly (since we are, after all, Episcopalians) there is usually coffee hour following the service. Sometimes one or more people sign up to host the coffee hour and provide some refreshments. Whether or not there is an official host, the kitchen is usually abuzz with helpers, both to set things up and, later on, to clean up. Thank you to all who have kept us happily fed, caffeinated, and tidied up these past months.
AN INVITATION
Even with all that help, the only way to ensure that we can have coffee hour each week is for folks to volunteer to help out. It would be helpful to have a regular schedule of hosts, and perhaps we will be able to get to that (several people are considering how we might organize that, so stay tuned). In the meantime, though, there is always a coffee hour sign-up sheet in Goodwin Hall. Please consider signing up to host a Sunday or two in the next few months. If the task seems overwhelming or you are concerned about the potential cost of providing refreshments, why not ask a friend to host with you? In the next few weeks there will be a printed “How-to Guide for Coffee Hour” on the tables next to the bulletins. And if you have questions or you just want to know more, please talk to Linda MacGougan or Martha Freimuth.
The important thing about coffee hour is not the refreshments, it is the fellowship that we enjoy when we simply take a few minutes to relax and talk. Spending time together reminds us of why Trinity Church is important to us, and why we can call ourselves a place of welcome, hope and healing!

What is Godly Play?
Sunday, May 18, 2025
Godly Play is a wonderful way to tell stories of faith—Bible stories, baptism, church seasons, and others in ways that allow us to enter the stories as “children”, and discover the riches that are waiting there for us all.
The stories are told very simply with simple props and without interpretation or moral instruction.
After a story is presented, we work with the story props, or create whatever they choose in response to what they feel most important or most interesting in the story.
What’s up for the next couple of months in our Godly Play class?
- Parables - People of Color Who Inspire Saints
- The Good Samaritan
- Parable of the Mustard Seed
- Harriet Tubman St Columba
Our students ages 2 1/2 and up are welcomed into our Godly Play sacred space at 9:45 each second, third, and fourth Sundays. Our classroom is on the 1st floor, room 3 in the education building. We join our families in church at about 10:40.
Anyone 18 yrs of age or older is welcomed to choose this as one of your ministries; once a month or once every other month ,and bring more JOY into your life!
To comply with safe church guidelines we must have two adults 18 yrs and older in our class.
Questions about this ministry? talk to Nancy Crandall in person or text
(860) 503- 3353 She looks forward to hearing from you.

THIS SUNDAY, MAY 18,2025
ADULT CHRISTIAN FORMATION
BIBLE STUDY
Our monthly Bible Study with Rev. George Chien will resume this Sunday, May 18. The study will focus on the scripture lessons for the day, and will be an informal discussion.
These conversations provide an opportunity to delve a little more deeply into God’s word, and perhaps to consider the perspectives of others on what these passages mean to them.
Please plan to join us in the library after the service this Sunday. You will be glad you did!

Upcoming Grounds Workday
The Property Team is planning a grounds workday on Saturday May 24 from 9 to noon. There is plenty of work to be done on Trinity's grounds now that the warmer weather is here. The work includes weeding, leaf raking and pruning, and the focus will be on the Memorial Garden and the Close. Please consider spending a few hours helping out with this effort to beautify our grounds in preparation for summer. Contact Peter Green for more information. His email is pmgreen76@gmail.com. Thank you !

Book Group Meeting
Trinity's Book Group will meet next on Friday, May 30th, from 7:00-9:00 pm. The featured book is Breaking Through: My Life in Science by Katalin Karikó. This is a powerful memoir by the winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, whose decades-long research led to the COVID-19 vaccines. Penny and Jack Pearson will host the gathering at their home in Bloomfield. Please let one of them know if you plan to attend. (pennypearson@comcast.net; jackpearson@comcast.net) Also, please note that this is a Book Group, not a Book Club, as folks are welcome to attend once, or regularly. All are welcome!

Cystic Fibrosis walk on May 31, 2025
Drew and Kate Smith will be walking on Saturday, May 31st at the Town Hall (2155 Main Street), Glastonbury, at 10:00 a.m. to support research for their granddaughter Sarah’s cystic fibrosis disease. Sarah is now 15 and in 10th grade.
Team Strolling for Sarah’s annual walk is about 3 miles or one hour. We walk to support the Great Strides program which raises research dollars for this genetic disease which affects the lungs and digestive system. The new drug Trikafta, created by the Vertex Pharmaceuticals with financial support from the CF Foundation, treats some of the causes for her illness and not just the symptoms. The median age expectancy for a person with CF is now 61. Ten years ago it was 38! Research is so important.
If you cannot walk with us we hope you will support us by donating to Team Strolling for Sarah. Please help support Cystic Fibrosis research. Make your check payable to:
CFF (Cystic Fibrosis Foundation)
